We started today at Kona café. The place was half empty but they still squished us onto a small table in between two other table fulls of people
never mind!
We started with some lovely kona coffee French pressed pot. I am not much of a coffee drinker but this is always a must for us really smooth and rich.
I went for the macadamia pineapple pancakes with ham (with macadamia nut butter, pineapple sauce and choice of ham, bacon or sausage). I remember being starving this morning, and saying to Tony that a little plate of pancakes was never going to fill me up. Then this arrived!
Three of the biggest pancakes ever! They were packed full with macadamia nuts which made them ever more filling, and there was more than enough butter and sauce. They were so, so tasty and yummy! The ham was really lovely as well juicy, and a nice charred taste. This was 10/10, and frankly blows Tonga Toast out of the water!!!!!!
Tony went for the Big Kahuna this was French toast, macadamia-pineapple pancakes, eggs, home fried potatoes and sausage. The potatoes were well flavored but a little underdone. He also had a side of toast.
He gave this 7/10 he thought the eggs were a bit watery, and didnt like the bacon. He loved the pancakes though (Ill point out he refuses to eat pineapple at home as he claims it makes his lips itch!!!) and liked the ham.
We will definitely return because I WILL be having those pancakes again!
Lunchtime (I like to tell a back story as you know) . . . we were leaving Universal Studios and I was moaning to poor Tony about how I hadnt had any really hot wings on this trip (thanks to Tony Romas taking them off the menu). He asked where we could go to get some for lunch, but I couldnt think of anywhere on site which did hot wings. Then I remembered months ago Eeyores Tailfinder on these boards recommending Buffalo Hot Wings to me . . .. but I had no idea where they were located. Well thank goodness for the sat-nav!! I popped its name in to the search function, and there were THREE of them within 5 miles of Universal!!!!!!
And we were off! We went to one somewhere on I-Drive, near the Holiday Inn / Wet n Wild.
It was only about a ¼ full so we got seated straight away. Service was efficient and friendly. We decided as it was lunchtime that we would share a few appetisers, rather than order entrees. We didnt realise how big portions were going to be!
I started with mango lemonade I only mention that as I was rather impressed they had flavoured lemonades maybe I need to get out more!!! It was very nice and refreshing!
Very happy to be near wings!!
We ordered Cheeseburger Slammers (Slam back this tasty trio of bite-sized burgers. Topped with cheese and served with French fries, they cover all the bases)., Mini Corn (Served with Honey Mustard sauce), and wings (with bones, of course!). You can order wings in multiples of 6 we went for 12 and in any one of about 14 different sauces. We went for hot which was 4 from the hottest end of the scale . . . at the time we considered going even hotter thank goodness we didnt!!!!!
The sliders were excellent really moist and tasty. Tony had 2 and I had one and we both give them 10/10. Really big portion though and would happily serve someone as an entrée I would think, especially as they come with fries!
The mini corn dogs were nice, and I really liked the mustard sauce. I give them 8/10. Tony gave them 6/10 and says they werent his cup of tea.
The wings. . . I had 7 and Tony had 5 . . . and they very nearly blew our heads off
!!!!!! Words cannot describe how hot this sauce was thank goodness we didnt go for a hotter one. They were SO good! Loads of meat on them, drowning in sauce, and they just fell off the bones. I think we had ranch dressing, which cooled them down a bit, but we were literally downing water by the gallon to try cool our lips down! We both give the wings 9/10. They were just what I needed!
This is poor Tony doing battle with them!
They do ribs as well I know someone earlier on was asking about rib restaurants off site. I havent tried any here, but I think I will in future!
I would definitely return here again, either for another light lunch, or for dinner!
But, we still had room for dessert! Thats right, we popped over to Ghirardellis on the way back to the hotel and had a couple of sundaes! I had the cable car rocky road sundae (Rocky road, chocolate chip and chocolate ice cream smothered with creamy marshmallow topping and hot fudge, with whipped cream, chopped almonds, cherry and Ghirardelli Squares milk chocolate. ), and Tony went for the mint bliss again (one scoop of mint chip ice cream, one scoop of chocolate ice cream, dark chocolate hot fudge sauce, whipped cream and a square of Mint Bliss Intense Dark chocolate) with a twist we discovered that any of the sundaes that have just two scoops of ice-cream can be put in a waffle bowl for an extra $1! So he thought he would try that!
Tony gives his sundae 9/10; he found it quite hard to eat the waffle bowl though, as he wanted to break bits off and eat with the ice-cream, but that would have meant it spilling everywhere! He wouldnt have a waffle bowl again.
Mint Bliss
Mine was nice - absolutely loads of cream, but it did melt a bit quick so was really messy! I give it 8/10.
Cable Car
We then (and I swear we didnt eat them today!!) went by Goofys Candy Store to stock up on some make your own goodies. I dont think Tony got one, but I had marshmallows as usual, dunked in milk chocolate, drizzled in caramel and rolled in oreo crumbs and choc-chips. Choc-Chips had actually vanished off the order form you have to complete, but they still had them in the counter so the cast member just told me to write it on the form . . . hopefully it was removed from the form in error, rather than being a permanent removal from the menu! This was very nice though I dont remember it well so I think Tony must have had most of it! I can't find the picture of it though . ..
Dinner was at House of Blues one of our favourite meals from last year! I ordered the same as last year baby back ribs with normal mash instead of sweet potato mash. Tony went for the pepperoni pizza. We also shared a pan of the rosemary corn bread.
Tony gives his pizza 9/10 and says it was full of mozzarella, and very fresh and tasty.
My ribs were lovely, just fell off the bones, and the mash was really creamy. The cornbread was divine really light, and tasting a bit of ginger - I could happily eat the whole pan single-handidly.
For the second year running this was a really good meal, nice quality food, friendly service, and we would definitely return. It is also SO worth your while making an ADR as for the second year running we were able to just walk in past the line of people waiting outside!
Coming next . . Chef Mickey breakfast, Earl of Sandwich lunch, Nine Fine Dragons dinner . . . and one of these was my best meal of the trip!!
