Official Thread For Upcoming Eastern Canadian Cruises

Does anyone know how far the Market is from Long Wharf? I would love to explore this area.

The market is straight up the hill, about a kilometer. take the Pedway starting at the museum and you will go through the mall, you can "shop untill you drop"[/QUOTE]

Long Wharf is not the main cruise berth That is called the Marco Polo Cruise Terminal (formerly Pugley Wharf). MPCT is close to the main uptown area of SJ including the museum and the market. Long Wharf is further into the harbour and getting to the market would be a little more round about. It still isn't far but at MPCT you can pretty much walk out and head up the street.

Hello, I will be on the next (6/17) cruise and in checking out the ports noticed that the next time into St. John the Magic will dock at Long Wharf. According to the ports web site due to construction their will be only one space at Marco Polo for the summer (till the sept. cruises) and the "ship schedule" shows the Magic at Long Wharf with the Carnival Glory at Marco Polo on Weds. Of course the rest of the summer the Magic is at M.P. when 2 ships are in port. Also the carnival ship holds 3500 so with the Magic's 2400 thats going to be alot of people in a port at one time.

Yes you can find poutine anywhere in Atlantic Canada. Actually it is one of the reason's I need to loose 50 lbs!!!!! You might not find it in a more upscale restaurant though. Speaking of the Lobster Roll at McDonald's, which is nice, its lobster salad on a roll kind of like a finger roll, they also sell poutine. Dixie Lee Fried Chicken has an awesome poutine with chicken, Pizza Delight used to, may still. Both restaurants are found throughout the Atlantic provinces.

Thanks so much, he'll be thrilled!
I have to say we had Poutine all over Montreal and surprisingly the Burger King there had one of yummiest poutine dishes, so wouldn't be surprised if it's pretty good at McD's.

Burger King has it here too.

Just got off the ship from the Inauguarl cruise to Canada. I strongy suggest you cancel the Bay of Fundy Railway Tour. Very little to see, most of the tour was spent getting there and back for not more than a fifteen minute stop. The tides were not reversing. The guide spent most of the time discussing a truck emptying wood chips at a paper processing factory for toilet paper. For people with mobility concerns there are several steps to get into the bus and train. Highly likely that Disney will cancel this excursion based on passenger feedback.

Thanks for this information. I have this booked, but not for long. Did you take any other tours or hear feedback from others about their tours? Thanks.

Wow! Thanks that was the one we were discussing. I will keep looking for other excursion reviews.

How was the overall cruise? Sorry you are back to reality already.

We took the city tour in Halifax. Great tour. The tour guide was very informative. Stopped at the Gardens and the Citadel. They need to adjust the schedule and shorten the time at the Citadel to no more than 30 minutes (they currently allow for a 50 minute stop.)

Thanks for the info!! What were the shows and dining rotations? Did you have fireworks?

Thanks so much for this information! Sorry there wasn't much to see

We are booked on this excursion but I will call to cancel it.

Now I need to decide what exactly to do in Saint John! This was our only excursion as we are doing Halifax on our own...seemed like there was enough there to do that.

Hmmmm!

That is disappointing to hear.

Was the train itself nice. My 2 year old is train obsessed so it might be worth keeping just so she can ride the train. I was doing the railroad combined with the HOHO bus tour.

Thanks Minnie for the update, I was afraid that might happen. Hopefully they will also learn their lesson and spice it up a bit before it is closed down completely. How was the welcome in Saint John and Halifax, and could you also let us know any comments you heard from others.

Sitting at LaGuardia waiting on a flight. Cruise was awesome.

A little chilly, highs on both port days were in the mid to upper 60s. As was our first sea day, second sea day seemed a little warmer but who knows.

Halifax was a great port and a cute little city to wander around in, so ok if you didn't have a port adventure booked.

Saint John wasn't as great so of the two definitely have something tourist to do in Saint John.

We did the Red Coat for a day tour in Halifax and it was so much fun. My 13 yo DS sho daggers at me when he saw the little kids on the tour but he had a great time as did my 10yo dd. I would actually say that the under 6 group did not do as well since they did a lot of the history and life in the day type of things. The kids had to enlist and got their one shilling for enlisting, then they dressed and they drilled them in several marching maneuvers. Then we had a personal shooting demo, then toured the fort including inside the citadel walls. There was a bagpipe parade, a shooting if the cannon, more drilling, yummy snacks and awesome views. This tour comes with the hop on hop off bus for afterwards. Can really recommend is one.

After the tour we just walked down into down and it was an easy pretty walk. At the end of the day we did the Keith's Brewery tour. This was neat because they went through a historical reenactment of what was going on when the brewery was built in the 1800s, plus went over the brewing process, plus gave you up to two free pints of their very good beer. Had lemonade and tea for the non drinkers. Kids liked the tour also.

The waterfront in Halifax is cute, there are a few fish shacks and one was right next to a Beavertail shop. Another Yummy for the day.

In Saint John we did the Maple Sugar shack tour. It was informative and pretty and e food was quite good. Bus ride was about 50 minutes each way. I think most of the tours from Saint John are going to have a bussing component be ause the city itself is mostly industrial except right around the port.

Ship days were awesome. Shows were great even according to my 13 DS. we had an inside stateroom on deck 7 forward. Loved the dark especially for my kids who are light sleepers.

I didn't keep my navigators but can tell you they had a lot of alcohol tastings on both sea days!

But ask me anything you might want to know.

This was beyond pathetic...esp. for $75 pp. There were so many complaints from so many disgusted people DCL refunded half the fee. Honestly, they should have refunded all of it. Basically, a commercial for the Irving family and their boring industries. More time spent looking at paper factory dump truck than the Bay of Fundy. And the tour guide was terrible...did not know his history and insisted on singing three songs (poorly). Saw lots of laundry hanging on clotheslines behind homes.

Thanks for the insight. Based on the other poster's info, I am cancelling the train excursion...so am now at a loss as to what to do in Saint John! I had hesitated on many of the excursions because I didn't want to spend too much time on a bus!
Wasn't sure about the Maple tour as it's past sugaring time. Maybe we will do that....

Did you pre book the Keith's brewery tour or just show up? I thought that might be fun in Halifax.

Were there other things besides alcohol tastings on the sea days? Do they do any food type classes? Both my mom and my daughter would love something like that!

Thanks!

30 or even 50 minutes is not enough time to visit the Citadel. You really need to do this by itself to give it ample time to explore the old fort and its history.

Yes, I'm sure you are correct since you obviously know a lot about the Citadel. I'm just relaying the comment and interests of those who choose this tour. A lot of seniors, some with mobility concerns. Many on this tour just wanted an overview of the city. Sort of like when people visit NYC on a tour and just spend an hour or so at the Cloisters, Met or Natural History Museums, where a local could easily spend the whole day.
