"We seem to be made to suffer. It’s our lot in life" - Feb/April 2017 - 5/9 Half/Grand Floridian Ca

When is your trip?

We are there May 15-19. Not a long trip, and only 2 park days, but we don't want to overwhelm our little guy. It will definitely be a change for us, as DH & I are open-close go go go type people. With my mom and DS, we will definitely slow down to smell the roses.

My Nautilus was awesome! Much better than the Uh-Oa!; however, in the comedy of errors that was David, I never really got the option to buy the glass or not. At that point, I wasn’t going to deal with him longer.

Nautilus - Barbancourt Pango Rhum, Appleton Estate Reserve Rum, Combier Creme de Peche de Vigne Liqueur, Tropical Juices and Falernum

That looks so cool! I'd be perturbed if I didn't get to buy the glass, but I don't blame you for not wanting to deal with David anymore.

So while I got everything I ordered, those that ordered food during his 2nd visit proved to be an issue. My friend had ordered a Dark & Stormy along with potstickers and pepperandchips had ordered potstickers as well and some drinks. Well - my friend had to use the restroom and make a phone call so she stepped away. David brought out the drink and said the potstickers would come out when she returned. Pepperandchips never got her potstickers as well so when she asked, she did finally get them. My poor friend never got her food upon return! We also reminded him about them! It was also the slowest service and trying to get our bills were also an act of Congress. At least no one got charged for the potstickers! He blamed the iffy service on it being really busy (it wasn’t) so I think it was a him thing and not a Trader Sam’s thing. The company was a lot of fun talking to other people from this board that have similar tastes (read booze and food) We headed to Mizner’s for our second stop and to hopefully get my friend some food!

Ugh, what a disaster! At least nobody got charged for the food they didn't get.

Woo hoo for getting the nautilus all to yourself! Love the potstickers but sucks about their service! How fun you had a DIS meet!!

I was so happy about that Nautilus! I want to get one again (without David the server) so I can get my glass! I'm glad you enjoyed the potstickers - my poor friend just wanted her food! At least she had humor about it to him.

I always love a good Dis Meet! My husband asked me if he was meeting any internet people next weekend - I know I have two friends that will be at the races that he's met before but no one new!

Oh, David. What a mess!! I truly have no clue what happened with him.. laughable! My husband keeps quoting your friend "Well I guess you didn't care about me tonight, David" LOL. I am so glad we could all meet, though! :)

Is it bad I totally forgot about that quote? I should have included it! I'm just so used to quips like that from her or my husband that I forget them quickly! David just can't even!

It was great meeting you and your husband!

2 Park Days are better than 0 Park Days!

I haven't been an open-close person in a long time! I'm more a park opener then afternoon nap person! We do go more than the average bear.

That looks so cool! I'd be perturbed if I didn't get to buy the glass, but I don't blame you for not wanting to deal with David anymore.

Well - now I just have to go to Trader Sam's again and drink another one! Poor David! He just was special.

Ugh, what a disaster! At least nobody got charged for the food they didn't get.

We all looked at our checks really carefully as we wanted to make sure they weren't screwed up. I think all of us were shocked that they weren't!

Mizner’s Lounge

We took the monorail over to the Grand Floridian and made ourselves a larger table near the bar. We all looked over the menu for drinks and food. When the server returned, we all were ready and made decisions quickly. I’m happy to say my friend got her food this time!

I went with the pork belly as I’ve always loved the pork belly dishes at Citricos. Since the appetizers at Mizner’s are actually from Citricos, I knew this would be the best option for me! The pork belly was nicely cooked and melted in my mouth as a good pork belly should. I loved the polenta as well and totally finished off the pork belly and polenta on my plate (some veggies were left behind)

Mizner’s always makes the best whiskey/bourbon cocktails. I went with a Manhattan as that is my go to there no matter what. I was really pleased with this but I just had one as I was at (really past) my alcohol limit for the day (if you’ve been reading this report - you know this is true!)

Manhatten

We all had a lot of fun as a group! Our server was so much better this time! I think pepperandchips has the photo of the three of us to prove it happened. My friend and I took the bus back to Disney Springs so we could walk back to our room! We ended back in the room sometime after 11:30pm as I know most of Disney Springs was already closed.

I made a decision to not have alcohol here as I needed a slight break! I went with the watermelon juice as also, what Florida girl doesn’t love watermelon? (I’m sure one exists but I’m not friends with any of those girls) I loved the juice!

iTMpgri.jpg
This looks good but I will try not to pass judgement on the no alcohol part :-)

Our next visit was to booth in Japan. I wanted something to soak up the alcohol in my system. I was really happy with this dish as it was perfect for that! The beef was really thin but there were a ton of noodles which was great!

Oh these are so good! I had the same booze soaking up craving when we had these last year and they so perfectly hit the spot. I've always questioned the layout of World Showcase geography wise, but now I understand the logic must have been needing carbs half way through flower and garden. :-)

We headed towards the festival center where we met Captain Ron, the turtle egg finding beagle. Captain Ron was a little too friendly to me as he put his nose somewhere that I think Disney didn’t expect him too. (Apparently Photopass got this on photo too as they didn’t delete it) My friend knelt down when she met him so it couldn’t happen to her.

Ok, you must explain. The only Captain Ron I know is sadly this one and what in the heck is a turtle finding dog????
upload_2017-4-13_21-57-55.png

Well, Vernie822 and her husband were already there so we moved over to her. (We should have them move to us after the disaster that was our server) You’ll get the joy of reading this meal three separate times in each of our threads! Let’s see how all of us thought of “David”
3 times the reviews = 3 times the fun!!!! So infinitely jealous you all were able to get together and meet. Bad service aside glad you all could enjoy some drinks and each other.

The pork belly was nicely cooked and melted in my mouth as a good pork belly should. I loved the polenta as well and totally finished off the pork belly and polenta on my plate (some veggies were left behind)

Yum!!! I always forget Mizners has the same food as Citricos. We'll have to check that out as I know Jason would love all the whiskey options

I love reading about how people drink around the monorails! I'm going with so,e girlfriends in August, and this is our plan for the first night. I imagine it will take more time because Saturday in August, but I can't imagine a more fun way to kick off my birthday week!

I think I had enough alcohol this day when it was all said and done! Sometimes you just gotta give yourself a wake!

It is smart to have such carb heavy options in the middle of the world showcase! You just need it by that point!

Captain Ron is a dog that lives in the Vero Beach area. He's been trained to hunt for Sea Turtle Eggs by their smell and helps them find the nests so they can be protected. They had a talk on Saturdays with him to explain the importance of his job and keeping the beaches safe for the sea turtle.

I do not know that Captain Ron! That looks like one of the B-Level movies you watch on Saturday/Sunday afternoons when nothing else is on...

Well...we can meet in November if plans don't change! We can enjoy all the alcohol then ;) We can drink EPCOT out of alcohol or something...

Yeah - I love being able to just get their appetizers there! Makes it nice to get the food without the ADRs. Jason would love all the whiskey and bourbon there!

Its always so much fun! You should have so much fun in August with your girlfriends! August isn't as busy as you may think it will be - Florida schools are already in session so that helps! Have an amazing birthday week!

Grand Floridian Cafe

We woke up sometime around 8AM. We had to get all packed up and such as we were going to be heading home after brunch this day. We packed up my car with our stuff and headed over to the Grand Floridian for our ‘brunch’ I was happy to see that their breakfast menu had turned more into a brunch menu as they had some of their favorites from lunch on their breakfast menu now. I’m more of a lunch/dinner fan than breakfast so this was perfect for me!

To end this weekend, I totally started with a cocktail since I obviously hadn’t had enough alcohol yet this weekend. It was fruity and a great way to start the day!

BDsHL7G.jpg

Magical Star Cocktail - X-Fusion Organic Mango and Passion Fruit Liqueur, Parrot Bay Coconut Rum, Pineapple Juice

My ‘breakfast’ started with french onion soup as who doesn’t love cheesy oniony soup for breakfast? This was yummy! Lots of cheese, a rich broth and tons of onions. I was a very happy girl! Good thing I wouldn’t be kissing anyone anytime soon!

iFuZT12.jpg

Carmelized Onion Soup Gratinee - Traditional French Onion Soup

The next dish was what made me the happiest about their menu change! The Grand Cafe Sandwich has been on their lunch menu for many years. I’ve loved the combination of boursin cheese sauce with fried onion straws and crispy bacon over the roasted turkey breast and moist focaccia bread. I’m not sure why I decided I wanted ham today but I ended up pulling it out as well, I really don’t like sliced ham that much. This is the perfect sandwich! Don’t be surprised when you see it again in this report when my husband and I have lunch here after the Dark Side Half Marathon!

The Grand Cafe Sandwich - Open-faced hot Sandwich w/ Ham, roasted Turkey Breast, Bacon, Boursin Cheese Sauce and Fried Onion Straws

After breakfast, we headed back to Disney Springs to look at the new dress store where I bought myself the Haunted Mansion dress and my friend picked up some treats from babycakes for herself. I dropped her off by 2:30pm and I was home before 3pm! It was a great last minute weekend trip!

Ah, thanks for the hook-up on Captain Ron. Sadly I saw the Captain Ron moving in the theater back in the day.

Keepin' my fingers crossed

How have i never seen or heard of this before. Sans the ham, which I don't like, this looks amazing!!!!!!!!

What a way to begin the day!

That sandwich looks amazing! I think I have Grand Floridian Cafe on my places to try now.

Good luck with your race coming up!

The grand Floridian cafe is consistently good! Love the soup, had it Thursday night....along with a mojito and Chardonnay of course! Lol

Ah, thanks for the hook-up on Captain Ron. Sadly I saw the Captain Ron moving in the theater back in the day.

Well - we all probably see some bad movies in the theaters. I have this app on my phone called Moviepass - It was $35.00 when I signed up originally over 3 years ago (I think its more like 45 to 55 a month now depending on where you live) but sit lets me see a non-3D movie every 24 hours in the theater. I've seem some bad movies over the last 3 years because of that...(Boy Next Door...Sisters...Ricki and the Flash...Exodus ) At least it lets me see some movies I probably wouldn't have paid for otherwise but loved (Gifted...Demolition, Pawn Sacrifice, Love & Mercy). I think the only person I know that sees as many movies as me is Jeri!

Keepin' my fingers crossed

My toes are crossed too!

Perfect breakfast treat!

Its my version of a Bloody Mary ;).

Have you've ever eaten lunch at Grand Floridian Cafe? If not - you must do that! This sandwich has been around for at least 10 years, if not longer. It hasn't changed and I'm glad about it! Cheese sauce and fried onion straws just make anything better!
What a way to begin the day!
Hair of the dog!

Good luck with your race coming up!

It needs to be for lunch (or brunch)! Love it! Can't wait to have it again in a week!

Thank you - I'm the worst trained ever for this race. I very well may not finish it but I'll do better next year with a fully functional ankle!

The grand Floridian cafe is consistently good! Love the soup, had it Thursday night....along with a mojito and Chardonnay of course! Lol

You better be posting a dining report or trip report! Hope you had a great trip!

I'm not sure why it took me so long to make the connection--I've been reading this dining report and loving it--but I just put two and two together that you were the person who'd done a DLR trip report. Obviously, I don't look at names too closely, LOL. My friend Calfan and I commented on the Disneyland trip report you did--we'd done the light side, too. It was my first race (her second). I thought our paths might cross next year at the light side, but maybe it will be sooner. I signed up last minute for the dark side--literally a few weeks ago--after Calfan twisted my arm. Admittedly, not very hard. I'll be on the lookout for you and your hubby. If a strange woman comes running up to you in a phasma costume, it could be me :)

Love your new profile pic!

We had a super trip! I was already planning our next trip before we left! Isn't that always the case! Oh my gosh, I don't think I'm exciting enough for a trip/dining report following! Lol

We did try the twilight feast which is 'ohanas meal through in room dining. It was surprisingly good. Very plentiful, tasty for being carted across the resort and inexpensive (because we ordered for less but got a ton!)

I can't believe Star Wars half is next weekend! I'm looking forward to reading all about it!

I did do a DLR report for Light Side! I remember your comments as you two traveled together! That is so exciting you are doing Dark Side so last minute! Last minute decisions are the best! If you see me, feel free to run up to us. I may be DNFing these races now though - I decided it was a good idea to fall hard today and twist my bad left ankle and skin my right knee while we were walking the dogs. I'm hoping its in enough of a condition that I can at least walk with a brace on!

Are you doing the half or the challenge? What are your plans? What corral are you in?

Ours are currently: (We'll have a car)

Thank you! I realized how pixelated my old picture was so I decided to update it with one of my favorite Stitch/BB8 mashups! I'll probably update it again once I get my tattoo this summer!

I'm glad you had an awesome trip! When is your next trip? ;). It is always the case to start planning - I have the following Disney trips upcoming - I know its a lot - the only non-Disney one is our long Italy trip in October!

2017 -
Labor Day Weekend w/ my mother at Beach Club
Wine & Dine Weekend w/ my husband @ BWV
Thanksgiving Day Weekend w/ my mother @ Ritz Orlando (not sure how much WDW we'll be doing that trip)

2018 -
Marathon Weekend w/ my husband and mother @ BWV
Light Side Weekend @ Disneyland Hotel w/ my husband
Princess Half Marathon Weekend w/ my husband @ BWV
Dark Side Challenge Weekend 2018 @ TBD (probably AKV in a 1-Bedroom since we have lots of points now)
We're going to do a long trip for Food & Wine in 2018 as well - possibly coinciding with Wine & Dine or that might be a separate trip.

Nice to know you can now get a 'Ohanas meal through room service at Polynesian! I didn't know you could get that! See - totally could do a dining report! Everyone loves food!

Nice Disney trip line up! Super jealous! I wish we could go more often.

The past two years we've gone Halloween through W&D half weekend since DD has no school 11/6-7 but now we're thinking thanksgiving week? I'm so indecisive! Rooms are scarce for W&D. I'm also tempted to run! Which means charity...again!

Jan 5-8 marathon weekend at AKL with BFF. My birthday is 1/5 and our first marathon!

April (dates to be determined) AKL hope to get a club level studio (we've been successful every trip! if we bring the babysitter (aka my mom) a 1BR.

Really trying to determine when to go to Aulani! Need to do some research best time to go...maybe oct/nov 2018.

Just started looking for more resale. We need points! Lol

Oh no on the fall! That is such a bummer. I hope you recover quickly. I decided to try snow shoeing out last weekend and ended up with two huge blisters on my heels. I've been wearing flip flops for the past few days (in the rain today) in the hopes that they will be better by Sunday.

We're doing the half, but not the challenge. Calfan is signed up for the challenge next year on the light side though. My knees are a little pesky after pavement so I'm hesitant to push it with challenges. I'm signed up for a quite a few halfs in the next year so that should be more than enough, LOL. We did light side in January, Dark side next weekend, Tink in three weeks, Disney in September, and light side again in January. I'm thinking about doing the Princess in February, too.

We signed up late and are in the last corral. Not psyched about that. How about you? We're going to try to get there early to be in the first wave.

This is a really quick trip for us:

Friday:
Flying in to MCO 3-4 pm and hope to get there in time to hit the expo before closing
MK after--have a few fast passes. probably pick up something quick at the park for dinner

Saturday:
Epcot! So hopefully we'll bump into you.
We only have one fast pass right now (around 11-12) and after that the plan is to shop, maybe hit a few more rides, and sneak in an alcoholic drink (or two) with enough time to get it well out of the system by bedtime
Dinner with DIS group (can't remember the restaurant); very early to bed.

Sunday:
Race! Try not to die in the heat.
Lunch at Sanaa
Fly out in late afternoon

So jealous about your CA grill dinner! My kids (20 & 17) are flying out to meet me at the end of a conference in July last minute (detect a theme here?) and we're doing brunch then. DH decided to skip out on the Orlando heat in summer, LOL. If I do the Princess DH and my son will probably come out with me so I'll be better prepared on dining for that one.

I bet for Wine & Dine - SSR is probably still available ;) We luck out that we are just a 3 hour drive away.

Thanksgiving Week is probably as crowded as the time you were just there! I guess as long as you know its going to be busy, you can be mentally prepared for it.

We're at 412 points now - I think that is finally the right amount for us. Even withal our trips planned for our April 2017 use year, we have like 74 points left. As those are going to end up banked into April 2018 - I have 422 points for 2 trips (April 2018 Dark Side Challenge and Food & Wine Festival 2018) We did concierge once and enjoyed it but we so rarely plan our trips out at 11 months that they are often already gone!

You will love Aulani! We went in the middle of busy season going the week of 4th of July and honestly, it wasn't that bad crowd wise. We were able to do what we wanted and see what we wanted without any issue. Then again, our one pool day we did have a Cabana which probably sheltered us from the pool chair hogs.

I hope I recovery quickly but seeing how I'm moving today - my doubts of completing the races are waning fast. I can barely walk today so I'm pretty sure I'm just not leave my desk as much a possible. I do have a doctor's appointment tomorrow for my pre-check on my surgery and maybe I'll ask him for a pain relief shot in my ankle since we already know its screwed anyway. Hope your blisters heal!

That's great Calfan is doing her first challenge next year! If your knees are pesky, have you tried KT tape on them? KT Tape is my friend!

We're going to do Princess as well!

I'm in Corral F along with 1/3rd of the participants! You'll find me along the right walking in a boot most likely! My husband is in Corral B which is where he is happy. He doesn't want to be in A as it would force him to go out too fast since we tend to get to be on the first bus and thus at the front of our corrals.

That is a really quick trip, seeing as you are traveling from the other coast! Maybe you will see us around EPCOT - I think I have 2 FPs set - one for Spaceship Earth, another for Frozen. I love Sanaa for a post race meal! We did that last year after princess!

I will cross my fingers for you on the shot :) I haven't tried KT tape, yet! You are the second person to recommend. I would have no idea on where to put it. But maybe I'll buy some to see if I can figure it out. I just picked up a bunch of those knee straps to try out. They seem to help a bit.

I read about the weird overload of F. Not sure why they did that. Seems like if they are going to go in waves they'd be better off with more corrals. Light side sucked waiting around to go--this I suspect is going to be worse.

Yes, very quick trip. That waking up at 3 in the morning (or whatever time we decide to get up) is not going to be fun. But I travel a lot and usually don't have too much problem with jet lag. I love Sanaa, too--bread is my indulgence and can't wait for all that naan :)

We'll be on the look out for you!

What a shame about your bad waiter at TS. They are definitely more lax about the alcohol at Florida than at the one in California. They let Fran order her own when we were there in October. We were at the Trader Sam's in DL and they let one of our party order an Uh-Ohah while the rest of us had drinks in front of us.

I didn't know Mizner's got their appetizers from Citricos, I would totally order that Pork Belly there! When you do your updates in small chunks, I sometimes forget what you had done earlier in the day. Probably enough alcohol right there.

The Grand Floridian Cafe looks great. When I went there last I was debating between the Reuben and the one that you ordered. I love the Onion Soup there! Awesome choices!

I wish I had 422 points! That's super! We really need to narrow it down for oct/nov. SSR had 4 consecutive days I think?! we could split stay which we do a lot. We shall see! We go two weeks a year with the kids spring and fall and lately I've been sneaking in a jan/feb trip! Gotta love run Disney! I followed your aulani trip report. I think we may try to get to aulani in the spring or fall because we're at our lake house jun-aug and my husband refuses to give up winter snowmobiling time. Ugh! So if you ever find yourself in the fingerlakes in upstate NY let me know! We have 50 wineries in a 30 mile radius. Jeri actually was in my town at our favorite winery last summer! Oh my gosh I'm rambling extremely off topic, which is nothing new!

I hope your ankle feels better. Hopefully you get that cortisone injection tomorrow!
