Great Movie Ride closes for Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway

I hadn't heard that rumor, but it wouldn't bother me either.

The ride fit in well when the park was initially opened and it was more like being in a working studio. However, that time is long gone. I like the idea of celebrating motion pictures, but the ride never really "gelled" for me, and it kind of feels like more of a time sucker whenever I've just gotten off the ride.

It is a rumor, but it is getting pretty strong. I still don't see them doing anything at HS until they have something else to replace it up and running. That park just doesn't have the bandwidth to sustain that.

Cant say I would really miss this attraction if it goes. It is so long in the tooth at this point. I love the concept of celebrating the history of movies in general. I just don't think they pull it off too well in this attraction. No offense meant to those who do love it. I also think that it's pretty obvious that there were obvious budgetary issues when the ride was created. The quality of the aa varies wildly throughout the attraction to the point of being distracting imo.

I don't know why they would close it but I don't think anything is closing until Star Wars Land is up and running. They wouldn't have much else left.

Truer words were never spoken. Everything between the movie montage in the queue and the movie montage at the end just needs to go.

They either need to update the movie sets to those that are relevant ......... I get the classic part but we are at a point that John Wayne and the others are becoming too far off the the known list ..... OR completely gut and re-imagine .... and I surely hope it's not a ride through the ages with Mickey Mouse.

Turner Classic Movie have not renewed their sponsorship of the ride which is were the rumors came from, I believe, which doesn't mean the ride is closing. That is fine with me, I wasn't really enamored with the new version, the ride was much more fun when the CM driver did all the talking. One rumor I heard that might be fun is changing the ride to The Great Mickey Ride. I am not totally sure what that entails but an attraction that follows Walt Disney Studios productions through the years or the early years, might be fun. Of course we always risk them turning the last half of the ride into an homage to Frozen, because apparently we can't have enough Frozen in the parks (actually, I have had more than enough LOL).

I agree that this one is in dire need of an update, but will say my son demanded a FP for it and must ride it every time (he's 11) because he's a huge Alien fan.

John Wayne will never be to far off the known list, but if they gut that ride, I want the John Wayne scene for my living room!

So I guess I'm the only one to not know GMR was closing??? So sad!! Will they have T's and what-not this year like they've had for Osbourne Lights etc...?

Not official of course but strong rumors suggest it will close this August-September.

The DIS rumor round-up said it "could" close as early as mid-August this year. No idea where that info comes from, but they must be confident enough to even list it?

Thanks for reading my article! I only put in info that I'm confident in.

Hmmm...interesting, yeah I don't think I've ever heard a round about date. I'd be surprised though if they closed it now with everything else they have going on there.

As they always say things will get worse before they get better.

And how many opening dates for ROL were posted? that were wrong.

Can it? Sure, anything can happen but I would never make plans around rumors.

Not wrong but things change.

I agree to never plan around rumors though. Often never plan around an official opening either.

The TCM contract was cut early. It will be over this year.

I agree with BrianL that there's no way they close it until at least Toy Story Land opens and I would think they'll way till Star Wars Land is up and running.

VikingInMouseEars I would love a Great Mickey Ride going from Steamboat Willie to Today that'd be fun.

I wouldn't be so sure about that.

I love the GMR. Let's just hope that it's similar to the Carousel of Progress closing I heard about 15 years ago. I was leaving the COP, and I told the CM how much I enjoyed it. "Too bad it's closing in a few months" she told me, and when I said that I hoped it would get a last minute stay, she said that although that would be nice, the decision had been made by the upper management, and unfortunately they were definitely closing it.

My boys are 17 and 20 - they have no idea who John Wayne is.
Granted I'm older by just about 9 years from your oldest son but I assure you I know who John Wayne is. McLintock! is one of my all-time fav movies and The Quiet Man is also a very good movie. Sometimes no matter the age people won't know who a person is but that doesn't mean that the majority of folks won't or that a person wouldn't be considered well-known. Do you know all the actors/actresses that your boys consider well-known?

I do keep up with their movie and book preferences, but not their music. My boys heard of John Wayne in the movie Trumbo, and he was cast in an ugly light in that movie (great movie, BTW). They had no idea who he was and I mentioned a number of his movies. Lost.

They do, however, enjoy Clint Eastwood.
