My troubles with taking carryon luggage into WDW parks

Lol @ the ventriloquist doll Me and my boyfriend bring a backpack into the parks because we hate to have to carry a bottle around. Or our phones. Camera. Sunglasses. We also bring extra clothes in case we get wet and want to change. Or maybe keep a rain jacket. We only bring in small backpacks though. Like a regular sized school bag. Would never consider bringing anything large or intrusive. I must say, though. If you're being bumped into by people's bags maybe you're standing a bit too close? Unless of course they're being severely obnoxious and swinging themselves and their bags all over the place. Just wanted to offer some insight into what might be in some people's bags!
You don't have to be too close to someone to be hit in the face with a backpack that sticks out several inches off their back when you are a child. DGD is right at face level with them. CM encourage you, loudly and in a demanding voice. and often, to close up all space. If you can see carpet you aren't close enough. If the guest in front of you has a bag large enough to smuggle in a small person you stand to get hit if they turn around in a crowd. I'm always pulling her back to stay safe, even if we can see carpet

Most people that carry half their house on their back have no idea how obnoxious they are to people around them. You definitely don't have to be in their personal space to get whacked.

I guess I should clarify that I completely agree with you. I too can't stand people who bring giant bags the size of a small child in the parks and then have no consideration for those around them. I was just offering another perspective.

See - that all makes sense. I will be in line and have these ridiculous conversations about smuggling troglodytes or a barbie dream house into the Magic Kingdom. I'm random like that, but those super oversized bags just make me wonder so much. I'm sure it's normal stuff, but I really want it to be weird!

I think I'm just one of those people that aren't noticed - like wallpaper. I'm definitely not up in people's business:) This mainly happens in MK. It could be that I'm super clumsy and it IS me, but in terms of being close, I'm pretty awkward with strangers, so I would never get close.

Now I'm going to start wondering what kind of weird things people have in their bags :rotfl2:

But I am in no way saying it's your fault! As stated above I just was trying to offer another view. I know that I've gotten too close to people before and then get mad when they bump into me. Oops! But 99% of the time, people carrying those massive bags in the parks are the types of people who think they're the only ones around and everyone should get out of their way. I'm the type of person to sarcastically say "excuse me" to people who bump you, turn around and then continue on their way because I can't stand when people have no manners. So I am definitely not wallpaper and still get bumped. So trust me, you are seen!

Sarcastically saying "excuse me" doesn't sound like very nice manners either to the person on the receiving end. I believe many are oblivious to the fact that they are hitting people with their backpacks so it may be more effective to constructively let them know they need to be more careful. And for those who aren't just oblivious, sarcasm is just going to put them on the defense and probably won't change anything about their behavior. People can respond however they want but I'm just not sure sarcasm is an effective response to a stranger.

Side note: on our last trip I tripped and my stroller lurched forward and brushed someone's leg. I immediately said "I'm sorry" as she looked me in the eye, did the sarcastic "excuse me," turned to the person she was with and said something about strollers with language I won't repeat here. I didn't do anything wrong. She was not injured. It was a true mistake. My own clumsiness. She made me feel terrible for something I had no control over. I felt badly for hitting her but that sarcasm made me feel defensive due to the sarcastic response and that she wasn't even open to a heartfelt "I'm sorry."

Well I take it you didn't quite read that whole sentence. Because I clearly said I say it to people who hit you, turn around and look at you and continue on their way. So yeah, I'm talking about the people who do it and realize it and still continue on. Because THAT is bad manners. Obviously of someone just doesn't realize it then I don't care. I get things happen. But if you know you're hitting someone and you just don't care then you're a self centered jerk and I will call you out. The oblivious ones are the ones who don't turn around and look at you.

I've also been hit with strollers and had the same thing happen where the person knows it and just doesn't care. It's rude. The woman in your case was a brat. You apologized and realized what happened. That's not the situation I'm talking about. I'm fully aware it's a crowded park and things happen, but when someone knows they did something and just doesn't care they are the wrong one. My post wasn't intended to offend the park goers like you who have manners. :)

OMG this for sure. Can't tell you how many times we've been whacked by oversized purses and backpacks, the latest being at Muppets 3D when a guy with a backpack walking down the row behind us proceeded to whack almost all of us in the head as he went by until one guy turned around and yelled at him. I mean I understand accidentally bumping one person, but if you're hitting several people, how can you not realize it?? :headache:

I don't know if this thread has afflicted anyone else, but all I can think of is Ludacris' "Rollout" therein he ponders the ever present questions of "What in the world is in that BAG, what you got in that BAG?" and later "What in the world is in that CASE, what you got in that CASE?" - along with other mysteries of the universe better not discussed on the Dis...lol.

I always take a small carryon luggage (bag with wheels) into WDW parks and had never had a problem until last fall.

First, at Magic Kingdom, when we went through entrance the magic band scan, a woman told us that we couldn't take the luggage into MK. So I told her that I would take care of it. The she said OK and let us go. That's it! Seriously!

I later looked up WDW rules and found out that my luggage was totally allowed because the rules says luggage must be under 24 inches, and mine was only 18 inches.

Rules: https://disneyworld.disney.go.com/park-rules/

Then, at Blizzard Beach, I was again told that my carryon was not allowed and must be put into storage. So I was pulled aside and given paperwork to fill out. (At that point, I still hadn't read the rules.) But before I even started filling, a manager looking person walked over and asked what was the problem. After I told her, she said that wasn't true, I could totally bring the luggage in. Then she proceeded to reprimand the worker who held me up, so I high tailed out of there!

What I learned: study the WDW rules before you go, and put it on the cell phone for ready retrieval so that if the CM comes up with some nonsense, you can readily refute them. Also, demand to speak to the manager. The CMs make minimum wage and doesn't have a clue about nothing.

Side note: I've never had trouble taking my carryon on the buses.

So in both parks you did get to bring your carry on luggage in with you? How does that translate to "troubles"?

Nobody should be bringing in any item that is pulled behind them. That said, I have seen kids being towed through the park in a radio flyer wagon.

I just don't understand people who think rules, guidelines, request etc don't apply to them. I also don't understand uneven application of said rules by Disney. Enforce the rules uniformly dangit.

I agree with you.
I seem to remember a time when you couldn't bring anything in that was pulled behind you because it was a tripping hazard. Or maybe that's just wishful thinking......

But based on the rules on Disney's own website, the OP's bag was within the guidelines even though I don't agree with it.

Agree - I have seen a wagon denied entrance at Epcot, couldn't help but notice as we were behind them at the tapstyles and they were not happy that the bus driver never mentioned it when they boarded!

And just last month we saw two wagons in Pandora on opening day - it was very crowded and they were having a hard time maneuvering. One was the radio flyer type and the other was the collapsible type.

I am wondering how you bring something like this on a ride. Splash Mountain, Pirates of the Caribbean, Haunted Mansion, etc.

How do you board the ride swiftly? Where do you store it in the ride vehicle? How do you exit quickly?

I never noticed anybody getting in and out of a Hunny Pot on the Pooh ride with a suitcase, but if I ever do, my eyes are going to be rolling around my head.

I've been at WDW literally hundreds of times and I don't think I have ever seen a wagon make it through the gate. I have seen a few people try, but they've always been turned away.

When the CM asks how many in your party, say 2 and then buckle that bad boy in next to you!:rotfl2:

I was floored. How in the heck they got it past the gate I'll never know. I've seen it at least twice in the 30+ trips we've taken. All within the last 10 years.

Despite the heat and crowds we saw more large backpacks in the parks in late April than ever before; seemed like many more than in prior trips and saw this at MGM. I wonder if they collapsed it to get it through the gates.

I take this type of luggage for a week - and take at least 4 pairs of sandals. I'm so curious as to what you're toting. Ya'll have no idea how badly I want to ask the guys with huge backpacks that will invariably hit me in a ride line what they've got. It could be anything, it could be practical, it could be dietary food, it could be diapers and changes of clothes, it could be tons of camera stuff, it could be a ventriloquist doll, or every portable game system. I just wanna know so much... I mean, I always kinda want to ask, but it seems A) rude and B) I can never make myself speak to a stranger except to tell them they have toilet paper on their shoe or something.

OMG - I MUST look up some of your other posts - you think just like me.... sorta (oops -spelling).

Hm, is that soft sided? Never seen one of those before, even at home. I wonder if they pushed it in front of them at the gate & made like it was just a stroller.
