Got an email from Disney I'm not sure I understand

Why wouldn't someone just take the cash they have planned to spend and just go buy a gift card with it? Or gift cards, as the case may be?
This whole thing seems puzzling to me.
My parents are both cash types, by choice. Though it's funny because growing up, my mother is the one that taught me to never carry more cash than I could afford to loose. Since I can't afford to loose any, I don't carry any. Some time along the way she changed and now does cash only. But she'd be ok with going to buy a gift card instead. And honestly, that just feels safer. I wish she'd do that anyway.

Another marvelous enhancement from Disney. They get your cash, via gift card, whether you spend it or not? I don't think, this is the method I'd choose.

Who sits around and thinks this mess up?

That may be but there are not by any means enough terrorists going to Disney that they had to implement a policy for it.
They started the finger prints and bag searches shortly after 9/11. Disney is very concerned about terrorism. They just took away their do not disturb signs.

This is going to be a pretty big problem for us if it's rolled out further than akl by September. We travel from England and always pay by cash for everything on our holiday because we get hit with credit card fees and get charged for paying in a different currency. Dh doesn't even have a credit card! I'm not willing to put our money on gift cards because we also spend time at universal and I'm not sure if we'll be returning to Orlando for a long time after this trip so it'll be wasted money if there's anything left on the card.

So, I got this email as well as we are staying at AKL next month. It DOES say that you can do a cash deposit at the front desk, and then pay with your magic bands, so no one is being "forced" to buy gift cards or anything.

We usually do gift cards, but I think this will be a good opportunity to try using magic bands as our form of payment. We will just put the cash down at the front desk.

A cash deposit at the front desk doesn't do anything for offsite guests or onsite guests who are not staying at AKL but use cash. This idea is shortsighted and only benefits a very small number of guests.

While I in no way believe this will roll out further, you will have the option of leaving the cash with the front desk and they'll apply it to the room charges as you make them. So in some ways, it may work out to be a benefit since it may make that easier. No cash to carry around/loose. Have the resort keep it safe in 1 spot, and you'll be able to get the difference back (unlike a gift card)

But you can use gift cards still, those aren’t traceable either.
Gift cards might be tracable if you buy them with a credit card, but they still allow cash also. I personally hope this is just a trial that does not go anywhere. I am wondering if you buy a single day ticket at the gate and do not stay at a hotel, can you pay cash without id? Because that seems like the weak link for a terrorist. I know they take your print when you enter, but if your print has no record, it is a way for someone to slip through.

I have to agree with a PP who suggested Disney knows people spend more with electronic payment options. There are studies that show we spend less when we use cash. I'm sure Disney wants to make it as easy as possible to spend money with them and when we lose track of the balance adding up, we don't stop spending. When we get home and see that grand total, it's too late - the Mouse already his cheese.
I'm the opposite. It's why I don't use cash. If I have cash in my pocket I'll blow through it and not even know what I spent it on. I use one cc and log into my wallet daily from my I phone. I'm super anal and OCD about my spending.

Of course you can pay cash without an ID. I'm not sure where you are stuck on the whole terrorist angle.
And they do not take your print when you enter the park. Not in the sense of what you are thinking. Not in a law enforcement can use it for ID sort of way.

My primary care doctor went cashless last year.

To the UK person talking about credit card fees for foreign transactions, don’t they have credit cards in the UK without foreign transaction fees? I got a Capital One Venture card just to use overseas when I went to UK. I would think that going to a foreign country happens way more often in the UK than here in the US since the foreign countries are closer.

:ssst::rainbow:Is in Only at the resort AKL or is it in the parks too??

You and me both. I don't use cash for fear of loosing it but the few times I do have it for some reason or another, I spend it and haven't a clue where it went.
With my credit card or debit card, I know exactly what every purchase was for and I always think twice about it. Cash never causes me to think twice.
