The Broadway show thread where we discuss all things Broadway

I saw Boys in the Band Tuesday night. I really liked it! I wasn't sure I would because we see so many musicals. The cast was amazing and I didn't expect it to be so funny. Jim Parsons tripped over the phone wire! Luckily he wasn't insured again! My daughter was upset that Andrew Rannells didn't stage door that night but Matt Bomer did so that was cool!

I seem to recall that he doesn’t stage door for any performances of this show.

Oooh, a one-night-only concert of "The Scarlet Pimpernel" in February! I'm excited--can't wait for the cast to be announced! This is from the same group that did Crazy for You, Secret Garden, Parade, Titanic, and Ragtime, so I'm sure it'll be good. :)

I hope Kiss Me Kate goes back to the original book and not the dreadful '90s revival version.
I have never seen the original. Just the movie and the PBS version of the 90s stave version. I LOVED Brain Stokes Mitchell and was so bummed he wasn't in the stave recording. I am very interested to see the rest of the cast.
Very excited to see what they do with Scarlet Pimpernel. It is one of my favorites. I wish they would record these 1 night performances. I would pay premium for them!

My first broadway show was Chicago and hated it. Luckily it was so long ago that I don’t remember it (or maybe it was so bad I blocked it out of my memory lol). It was a college class assignment so I had to see it or I wouldn’t have!

So my question is- is there a broadway show you wish you didn’t see?

Cats!

Les Miserables....hated it.

Lol...one of my favourites but my husband agrees with you 100%. He refuses to see it again. Luckily I have 2 daughters that like musical theatre that I can go with. It is coming to town in 2 weeks but we will be at Disney.

I haven’t regretted any shows I have gone to but was disappointed in Mary Poppins. Cats was my first show but I was youngish( late teens early 20s) when I saw it. The only thing I remember is the man next us singing loudly along. Ugh!

SpongeBob! Mary Poppins was pretty bad too.

I adore Flower Drum Song but the PC revival of 15 or 16 years ago absolutely sucked and mercifully died a quick death on Broadway. Even Lea Salonga couldn't save this PC rewritten clunker.

Saw The Iceman Cometh last night. While it was wonderfully acted (I mean cmon....David Morse and Denzel Washington!), I really, really disliked the play. I don’t think I will ever go see another Eugene O’ Neil play again, no matter who is in it.

Sunset Blvd, I saw it at a local theater and didn’t enjoy it. When it was on broadway last year I saw it again thinking Glenn Close this will be fabulous.. Nope still didn’t like it, I think I’m just not an Andrew Lloyd Webber fan.

Rock of Ages. HATED it! It was so vulgar....

I saw a decent production of Rock of Ages on a cruise ship, of all places. The thing is, there were warnings in the dailies delivered to the rooms and at the theater entrance that the show was not suitable for children. I was shocked at the number of people who brought kids. Tbh, though, a lot of it would have gone over younger kids heads. Unfortunately, there is no rating system for Broadway shows. I wonder how many people hear "Angels in America" and think it is a feel good family show or something.

Glad you mentioned it. I never " got" Angels in America and I'm queer as a $3 bill! I wouldn't waste my money.

The Performers (2012).
(with Henry Winkler & Alicia Silverstone - closed after 6 performances! Opened 11/14/2012, closed 11/18/2012.)
A romantic comedy set during the Adult Film Awards in Las Vegas (I'm not kidding)
Henry Winkler's first line on stage was "Who do you have to fist to get a drink in this town?"

Taller Than a Dwarf (2000). (with Matthew Broderick - closed after 56 performances)
Disaster! (2016). (with Adam Pascal - closed after 72 performances)

I also didn't care for Hello Dolly (I saw it with Bernadette Peters who I loved in Gypsy)

In recent memory, I wish we had found someone to take our tickets to Love Never Dies. Ugh, what a waste of time.

Saw Hamilton on Friday night - my wife and I both walked out just speechless. It was so good!
