The 10 day ticket has 14 days to use it in.
Drop to 9 and it's 13 days to use it.
Drop to 8 and it's 12 days to use it.
Drop to 7 days and it's 10 days to use it.
Drop to 6 and it's 9 days to use it.
Drop to 5 and it's 8 days to use it.
Drop to 4 and it's 7 days to use it.
Drop to 3 and it's 5 days to use it.
Drop to 2 and it's 4 days to use it.
Drop to 1 and must use it that day.

So 8 - 10 day tickets have 4 extra days to work with.
4-7 day tickets have 3 extra days to use the tickets.
And 2 or 3 day tickets have 2 extra days to use the ticket in.

Who the heck comes up with this stuff?!

If you are booking a short trip you likely don't need more than 2 extra days. If you are booking a longer trip you likely will need more time. I guarantee they have data on this.

The bean counters who want to make sure you don't go somewhere else while in Orlando.

You're assuming people only go to WDW when they come to the area, which we all know is not true.

I really wonder if the Disney resorts like this though. In the past if we've had other plans in Orlando we've just stayed put at WDW and drove elsewhere. With this reduced amount of days to use a ticket in I'd now be more inclined to just move over to where I planned to visit next or to move offsite.

Parks will like it because they can staff even tighter but I think there are trade offs with this decision. They would already have the data that was likely used to create these new windows and be able to use that and I am doubtful they had to actually had to complicate it with a varying window in order to achieve what they are looking to with this. Just my own quick thoughts based on how I would now feel comfortable in shifting plans elsewhere once I've done my 2 out of 4 days.

I am not assuming anything. Disney has the data. They know what most people do. Disney added the flexible option for those who need more time. Yes its more expensive but again Disney does that for a reason.

JMO but I don't think they added the flexible options so people could get more time if they needed it. They are the ones that reduced the amount of time you have to use the ticket from 14-days to the method they are using now. People already had the flexibility for more time before with their ticket not expiring until 14 days after the first usage.

Now as for the exact extra days (i.e. 4 days, 3 days, 2 days) if purchasing X type of ticket that I will agree they likely looked at when tickets were used generally speaking compared to someone's onsite stay in terms of number of days (so you have those rest days, you have those resort days, you have those water parks days, etc).

But to me the main reason they took away the 14-day expiration is so people are more locked into Disney. Same reason why Universal reduced from 14-days to 7 days. The less days you have to use your tickets the less desirable it becomes to do other things.

Maybe. Or maybe more will think like I am and posted above. I'd now think of finishing Disney and moving on to the next spot.

Exactly, which again is based on data they have. Disney has an entire team of data scientists who do this for them. If you want to venture outside of Disney you pay even more so Disney has your money either way.

Yes, this is a scenario when you really get screwed (is that too crass??). You have to pay to make the tickets flexible or adjust your plans. I know people are saying the loss of 14 days isn't a big deal to most people, but I think it is a big loss to the tickets in general.
The loss of the 14 day I think is a bigger deal than Disney may realize.
I haven't checked.... but what is the price of the flex option compared to just adding more days to your ticket? So, for example you buy a 5 day ticket, want to use it for 3 days, then go to where-ever for 4 days, then back to WDW for your last 2 days. Would it be cheaper to get a 7 day hopper vs. the flex option? giving you the extension of the 2 days you need. I know doing this you actually won't use all 7 days, but is it cheaper than the flex option??

I said less desirable not that people won't do it.

The more restrictions you place on someone the less desirable certain options can become such as going to Universal if you're just so-so thinking about it (or SeaWorld or other places), such as switching hotels to go offsite if you were onsite to begin with which takes time and repacking up of things, such as someone like how we traveled where we switched it up and didn't go to Disney day after day in general but mixed in Universal days in there, etc.

Why would a guest buying a 7-day PH over a 5-day PH not be to Disney's advantage? Park passes burn a hole in people's pockets and they will likely use the extra two days and make more money for Disney while in the parks.

I think it's going to depend on when you go honestly as the park ticket pricing is structured based on dynamic pricing as well as just how many days do you want the ticket to be valid for from your first date of usage.

Really in a nutshell no one is going to be able to figure out the best plan for themselves anymore simply by asking on the DIS "should I get this number of parks days or this number or buy the flexible date option, etc" because it's always going to depend exactly on when someone is going.

Sometimes financially you're going to come out ahead when doing more park days vs the flexible date option and some days I would imagine not. But you'll still have to figure that part out in regards to how your travel plans are and your needs.

The flexible date option removes 2 things as far as I understand- the restriction based on how many days of tickets you're buying and the exact date-specific dates you are buying. So you may still need to purchase the flexible date option even if the 'use with X number of days from first usage' isn't an issue to you IF you want your park tickets to not be date specific.

Yup.

Bought 2 day plus 1 day free for Universal both in 2011 and 2017 trips. At least from what I remember UT's pricing was the same price for a 2-day park to park ticket as it was for a 3-day park to park ticket at that exact time. My cost for the 3rd day consisted of parking fees and of course food and drink and souvenirs lol.

Same for Disney-bought 4-day get the 5th day free for the 2017 trip and UT's pricing was the same price for a 4-day as it was for including the 5th day for free. Now no I didn't have to pay for theme park parking as I was onsite but I sure spent some money for food, drink and souvenirs lol.

I got a better deal for my 2011 trip purchasing from a different reseller as it was 3-day plus 2 days free at the cost of a 3-day ticket. That trip however we were offsite so we paid for theme park parking the days we didn't use the free shuttle included at the hotel, plus food, drink and souvenirs lol.

Honestly, there are so many options now I think you're just better off calling a travel agent and telling them your travel dates and what you want to do. Let them figure it all out for you, give you a price, then just decide if you can afford it. Heck with spending so much time figuring out all the minutia of planning a trip to WDW.
Nah. I'll go somewhere that isn't so complicated to plan.
