insurance that covers death of family member

I am too late to get "cancel for any reason" insurance, but I need to be sure that it will cover death of a family member. Hate to be morbid, but my parents are 89 and 87 and who knows what the next 130 or so days will bring. My dad just called and said he lost 20 pounds in a month and they took him off of his thyroid medicine (which he's been on for 30 or 40 years) but it reminded me this is something I need to do ASAP. Any recommendations?

You'll want to look in the policy document for language like this:

The Company will reimburse the Insured a benefit, up to the Maximum Limit shown in the Schedule or Declarations Page if an Insured cancels his/her Trip or is unable to continue on his/her Trip due to any of the following Unforeseen events:
(a) Sickness, Injury or death of an Insured, Family Member, Traveling Companion, or Business Partner;
(1) Sickness or Injury of an Insured, Traveling Companion or Family Member traveling with the Insured must be so disabling as to reasonably cause a Trip to be canceled or interrupted or which results in medically imposed restrictions as certified by a Physician at the time of Loss preventing continued participation in the Trip;
(2) Sickness or Injury of a Family Member not traveling with the Insured Such disability must be so disabling as to reasonably cause a Trip to be canceled or interrupted and must be certified by a Physician;
(3) Sickness or Injury of the Business Partner must be so disabling as to reasonably cause the Insured to cancel or interrupt the Trip to assume daily management of the business. Such disability must be certified by a Physician;
Give the insurance company a call and ask if they have any specifics on documentation required and circumstances that allow the death benefit to be used.

Even if it was available wouldn't the cost of the insurance be about 50-70% of the cost of the cruise?

I have an annual travel insurance plan that was under $500. The cancel for any reason plans might get that expensive, but not regular travel insurance.

Holy Cow! Last time we cruised, I got Travel Guard insurance to cover our family of 4, with a $10k total trip cost AND it was under $200 total. $1k seems like an insane amount!

Doesn't the cost vary widely based on age? For an 85 and 87 year old you would probably pay more than $1k on a $20k trip.

Could you just look into the insurance offered with Disney cruise line?
TRIP CANCELLATION We will reimburse You, up to the Maximum Benefit Amount shown in the Schedule of Benefits, for the amount of the unused non-refundable prepaid Payments or Deposits for the Travel Arrangements You purchased for Your Trip, when You cancel Your Trip prior to departure for a covered reason. Trip Cancellation must be due to one of the following reasons: 1. Your, a Family Member’s, a Traveling Companion’s, or a Traveling Companion’s Family Member’s death, that occurs before departure on Your Trip; or 2. Your, a Family Member’s, a Traveling Companion’s or a Traveling Companion’s Family Member’s covered Sickness or Injury, that: a) occurs before departure on Your Trip; b) requires Medical Treatment at the time of cancellation; and c) as certified by a Physician, results in medical restrictions so disabling as to cause Your Trip to be cancelled; or 3. for Other Covered Events, as defined; provided any such covered reason occur while coverage is in effect for You

And they do have that extra cancel for any reason which will give you 75% of the cruise fare in case you were denied by the insurance

its 100% coverage and it was based on age of when trip was booked which was a year ago and trip is in 66 days and insurance was purchased yesterday

I guess that makes sense. We were mid 30s with 2 kids on the policy last cruise.
Oh my, I have to clarify here...I am 55...but I am worried about something happening to my elderly parents (who aren't going) before or during our trip.

I could, but I have other costs to cover...airfare and a hotel the night before the cruise, the transportation, etc. I don't believe Disney covers the other things .

It could also be due to how long you waited to purchase the insurance after booking the trip. The closer you are to the trip date, the more the insurance costs because the insurance companies figure that people who buy insurance at the last minute are more likely to file a claim.

I have always purchased from Allianz. I find their prices to be reasonable and they do not charge for children to be on the policy. Sending positive vibes your way.

Are you in Canada or the UK? Outside of the US is the only place I’ve ever heard of annual travel insurance products.

OP call insurance places and tell them what you need. That’s the only way to know if you can get it and what it’ll cost. And all the dcl insurance people, too.

Somewhat correct - but OP's parents aren't traveling so the insurance would not be based on those ages.

@daisyx3 The insurance should be based on YOUR age, not your parents since they are not traveling with you. Well, your age plus the age(s) of anyone traveling with you. Depending on the plan purchased, as shown in earlier posts, YOU are covered if a non-traveling family member passes away. You will not need to list ages of all relatives, just the traveling party.

Enjoy your cruise!

We purchased DCL insurance for our upcoming trip. It was actually cheaper using theirs than purchasing outside insurance. We are in our mid 60’s. The insurance does reimburse cost of cruise in the event of a family member’s death (not sailing with you). We were concerned because our moms are 92 and 93. The cost of their insurance is a percentage of the cruise cost. The insurance must be purchased prior to the final payment date.

We have carried an annual travel insurance plan from Allianz for a number of years, and we are certainly based in the U.S. Their web site is easy to use to get information about coverage and cost.

Added note: Our experience the one time we had to file a claim was excellent, very straightforward as to documentation and received the settlement in less than two weeks after submitting the claim.
