OK, I'll say it... we are too sensitive

But yet it does, because there is a finite amount of money. We have people literally dying in the streets from drugs and crime and you're worried about a statue that may hurt someone's feelings. What I find amusing is because of the revisionist history being taught in failing public schools, it has to be pointed out that they should be offended and outraged. Isn't that the very definition of irony? Reminds me of someone painting a house that's on fire.

Of course there is a finite amount of money - how many statues have been removed so far, a handful in recent years? Certainly not enough to explain why all of those problems you've mentioned haven't all been solved by now, if that's the difference a little money would have made.

Hurting someone's feelings - I think it is a little more significant than that. I'm quite ashamed, as a fellow American, that you don't.

Revisionist history??? You really believe that kids have to be taught to be angered by racism and slavery?

And in twenty years we will still be having this same conversation.

What conversation? That I proved you wrong in your effort to blame the removal of some statues for many of the problems in the country?

And my actual responses - no rebuttal?

No answer to my question about kids in schools not needing to be taught to be angered by our real and existent history of racism and slavery?

1) the problems haven't been solved because it's easier to blame everyone else for your failures and focus on the past rather than teach personal responsibility.

2) Being offended won't kill you, however a errant 7.62 X 39 from a drive by will.

3) The "history" being taught now is so pathetic the past 2 generations have no understanding of who those statues are, and some one has to "educate"
them on why they are to be outraged.

My point is while we waste time dwelling on the past we don't deal with real present day issues. But by all means remove every statue, flag or song you find offensive. That's time, effort and capitol that could be better used elsewhere. After all it's much easier to take down a statue or complain about something someone did 90 YEARS AGO than deal with the real issues. No one has the guts to name, much less solve today's problems.
Personally I couldn't care less about Kate Smith, General Robert E. Lee or Nathan Bedford Forrest. I am smart enough to know that after all of these offensive things are removed some people will still not be satisfied AND the real problems will still exist.
Uh...I’m a social worker. I dedicate my career to trying to right those other things...AND I think most of the statues should come down too. They’re not mutually exclusive things.

Obviously we can't walk and chew gum at the same time or these problems would be getting better not worse.

Only in Government do we take a demonstrably failing effort and the only answer is to spend MORE money on it. But hey "it's for the kids" right?
So, it’s your opinion that if we didn’t waste time & money taking down statues that we could have eradicated these issues by now?? This is a relatively new movement so we must have been almost to the point of eradication before all this started then, huh?

And, a lot of the current social issues are rooted in the history of racism & oppression in this country so...

How much does it cost to remove a 1500 pound statue that's been there for 100 years? $2000.00? $10,000.00? Wouldn't that money be better spent in the school system or homeless shelter or rehab center?
Here the city/gov’t didn’t pay to remove anything. It was paid for by donations. There is nothing to suggest that the donations would have been offered for any other cause.

No, my point is that these gestures are hollow and ultimately will have little or no affect on very real problems. But this is a perfect example of how some people base decisions on logic and others on emotion.

Are you suggesting that black children are too dumb to be offended by a history that excludes & oppressed them except that someone pointed it out to them?? If anything, if there wasn’t outrage before, it’s that minorities got used to the status quo that their oppressors inflicted on them for years. Perhaps, they finally feel empowered enough to speak out against it.

And there it is...
If pressed hard enough the racial undertones rears it’s heads

But if they make things feel more inclusive who does it hurt?? If they’re just gestures & don’t matter then why do ppl fight so hard against the change?

I'm suggesting that black, white, Hispanic, Lithuanian children are so poorly educated by public schools they know nothing about the Viet Nam war much less the the civil war. The removal of every sign, statue, movie, song, book, T-shirt, after school TV special on slavery will have zero affect on crime, drug use, illegitimacy rate, and education system in the black community. As a Social Worker you should know the real problems that are faced every day.

As a social worker, I spent a good amount of time learning about the history of injustice & oppression in this country that STILL exists...from the educational system to the prison system. I’ve also worked in both systems & have seen it first hand. Within my current school district, more resources are channeled to the wealthier schools with less minorities. You’re implying that things are like they are in these communities b/c of a lack of personal responsibility, but that fails to acknowledge how we got here.

You don’t have to know about the civil or Vietnam wars to know racism still exists & Robert E Lee shouldn’t be honored by a statue. Believe me, many of them are far more educated in this area b/c of life experience.

Or you can use the removal of statues, songs, signs, wearable white sheets, burning crosses, hanging nooses and whatever else needs to be done as a sign that we are done with discrimination and hate and going to try to start treating everyone equally. Someone shot up a synagogue yesterday and 6 months ago, someone else burnt down 3 "Black" churches last month or the guy that tried to run people down because he thought they might be Muslim. Symbolism of discrimination continues to propagate the belief that it's okay to hate someone because of their color or their God. In my world, it's not okay to hate.
