The Running Thread - 2019

To build off of yesterday’s question, for those of you that train in cold weather what do you wear? What changes in your gear from 40* to 20*? How do you keep your phone warm?

Answer: what I have for my legs isn’t going to work this winter so looking for ideas. I typically treadmill train so cold weather has not been a daily issue, but am without a treadmill/gym until we are out of the short term rental into something more permanent and I know which city to look in.

My general rule of thumb is:
50+: Shorts and SS shirt
40-50: Capris (cover my knees) and a LS shirt with sleeves that are loose enough t push up, headband if it's windy
30-40: Loose running tights (personal preference on the "loose"), LS shirt, running gloves, headband
<30: Depends on the conditions, but generally Boy short underwear, running tights, winter-weight/wind-resistant running shirt, gloves or convertible winter mittens, headband or hat (windproof).

I tend to run warm, so transitional weather I like to be able to push up sleeves or even legs. My "important body parts to keep happy" are my ears--any cold/wind gives me a headache. My feet stay fine, so I don't often use the smartwool socks I have.

It takes 1/2-1 mile for me to hit "internal run temp". By then I know if I'm overdressed or underdressed and can adapt (or suffer) accordingly.

ATTQOTD Disposable Clothes: I try to use this opportunity to get rid of some old clothes I no longer wear and almost always discard before the race starts not along the route. For local races, I have sometimes returned to the start to pick up what I discarded if the item was something I could use again. Other times, I have left them.

For my first runDisney race - 2018 half marathon we had temps in the 30's. I was terrified about standing in the corral for an hour. Leading up to the race, I tried to simulate the experience by standing in my back yard at night. I showed up on race day with a base layer of running tights and a cold gear compression shirt. Sweatpants over the tights, hat and gloves and 3 yes THREE sweatshirts with one being a hooded sweatshirt. I honestly started feeling hot in the corral. I discarded the sweatpants and 2 sweatshirts at the start and kept one sweatshirt until about mile 3.

I am doing Dopey this year and my head is spinning just thinking of the number of running clothes / throw away clothes combinations I will need for different weather conditions on each day. I probably will need to buy some throw away stuff this year as I do not have that much I want to get rid of.

To build off of yesterday’s question, for those of you that train in cold weather what do you wear? What changes in your gear from 40* to 20*? How do you keep your phone warm?
I live in west-central FL, where we do get days in the 40s and lows in the 30s, with wind chills sometimes into the 20s - not many of them, but usually at least a couple a year. What I wear depends greatly on time of day and how far I'm going: 40* and sunny, I'll opt for regular weight tights, long sleeve shirt, tech jacket, gloves, regular running hat, ear cover, neck gaitor - if my run is longer than a few miles, chances are I'll take off the gloves and unzip or take off the jacket at some point. Below 40* and/or 40-ish in the dark, and especially if there's wind (which there almost always is if it's that's cold here), I'm in thermal tights, short sleeve shirt, long sleeve shirt, thermal jacket, gloves, knit hat, neck gaitor. I wear SmartWool socks year-round, so no change there. I've never had a problem with my phone getting too cold, but I have had the touch screen not respond because my finger was too cold!

ATTQOTD Running Clothes: Always shorts and tech shirt. Below 45°: Add a warm “cold gear” compression shirt under my tech shirt. Below Freezing: Add running tights under my shorts and hat/gloves. Below 20°: Add a warm tech sweatshirt - however, I rarely go out below 20°.

ATYQOTD: I've never shed clothing during an actual race. I'll have a throwaway top if it's below 45 or so that I'll take off prior to start but nothing during. One of the local races here normally gives out gloves in the packet so I have used those as throwaways during a race if its cool enough at the start.

ATTQOTD: 40s: I'll just have a long sleeve top on (I'll wear a singlet if its a race), still shorts though. Below 30: normally add tights and compression mock. Below 20: swap a winter hat for normal running hat, switch from gloves to a pair of running mittens that can keep your hands warm at any temperature it seems. I'll wear a neck buff too.

Attqotd:

Phone hasn’t been an issue.

55-cotton low rise socks, shorts, tech T shirt

45- shorts, long sleeve mid weight thermal, cotton low rise socks

35- shorts, mid thermal, cotton socks, wool hat, fleece gloves. Hat and gloves go on and off as needed to adjust to shaded/sunny areas.

25-shorts, 2x mid thermal top, gloves, hat, cotton socks

15- wool socks, long under wear, fleece gloves, mid weight thermal top, soft shell jacket, hat

5- same as above, move to 2 mid weight thermal tops, heavier gloves

-5, changeshorts for soft shell pants, neck gaiter, prolly use my OR Baker mitts next time.

I have mitts rated to -80, but shouldn’t ever need those running. I’ve actually never needed them, I bought them for winter mountaineering and that kind of petered our as a hobby for the moment.

48+ = T-shirt, shorts, low rise socks
40-47 = baseball hat, LS shirt, shorts, compression socks
32-39 = baseball hat, tshirt, LS shirt, running pants, socks, gloves
<32 = hat, tshirt, sweatshirt, running pants, compression socks, gloves

There isn't a Chicago Marathon 2020 thread and I am not committed enough to create one, but I know some of y'all have entered the lottery or have a guaranteed spot -- who all do we have thinking about Chicago 2020??
Did you change your mind on this too?? lol

Race reports from @michigandergirl and others over the years have me tempted to enter the lottery but I haven't done it yet...

Do it!!! I believe @roxymama has guaranteed entry.

I keep saying I'm going to take a break from marathons after Goofy, but then last night I entered the early entry 50 for the 50th TCS NYC marathon lottery. It's a long shot, but then I'll be automatically enrolled in the general lottery in January too.

Interesting.....didn't realize Chicago did guaranteed spots, with a very generous "old lady" time. It would appear that my 2018 Dopey Marathon or even my dreadful 2019 Boston would get me in. I was contemplating New York, where I also meet the guaranteed time. Will have to think about this.

I entered that too!!! Totally on impulse, and mostly because I assume I won't get in. Good luck!!!!!

I was totally impulsive on that one too. I figure I won't get in and that's okay because I think DH might lose his mind if I have any more expensive race weekends in the next year. :rotfl:

No guaranteed spot for me. Assumed that was for super speedy folks.
I entered the lottery. Guess I will find out on December 12th if I'm in or not.
Good luck to everyone else.

ATTQOTD: At 40 F, depending on wind conditions, I'll have thin leggings or shorts and a lighter long-sleeve shirt. No gloves or hat.

As it gets down to freezing, I'll go to a thicker long-sleeve shirt or maybe a long-sleeve with a short-sleeve underneath. Still no gloves or hat.

As it gets into the 20s F, I'll add a wool cap that covers my ears and light gloves with tech tips. Often I'll end up taking the gloves off when I get started. Two long sleeve shirts or maybe a long-sleeve and a windbreaker, depending.

Below about 20 F, I'll switch to my extra-warm leggings and add a top layer to what was listed above. I also have these nice oversized gloves that are made so that you can take off only the finger part (someone got for me to use while observing with my telescope in the cold), so I put these over my tech-tip gloves. I may take these off during the run

When we get into single digits, then I add one more top layer and will probably not take anything off. :)

Oddly, I never change anything about my socks - just one pair of socks and the same running socks I wear in the summer.

Also, I've never had any problems with my phone in the cold, even in single-digit weather, and I do not keep it on an inside pocket or anything like that.

I actually like running in the 30s and 20s and even below, as long as I'm ready for it. I find it invigorating. (As long as it is not slippery conditions.)

I would like to enter Chicago, but there are certain rules in my house regarding travel races, (no solo trips, and trip can't be just running) and since the race falls on my daughter's birthday, and their fall break doesn't fall on an adjacent week this year, I am going to have to pass this time.
