No, but that would be hilarious. Some kids did make a mess of a bowl of candy that was left out. Emptied it and scattered pieces all around on the ground.

Forgive me if this has already been discussed ad nauseam, but the whole Amex Rat thing boggles my mind. I don’t understand how they can justify clawing back points (self referrals) and now credits for what appear to be flaws in their own system. I understand the referrals were not intended for self referrals, but in my opinion they f’d up when they created a system that let those things slip through. They should have accepted responsibility for the error in their system, and as soon as they realized people were self referring shut it down. Why claw back the points? It seems petty. Amex created a “flawed” system and people ran with it. Honestly I find it a bit tacky.

If I left an entire bucket of candy on my doorstep on Halloween and the first kid who came by took the whole bucket; I see that as my fault. The kid saw an opportunity and took it. Lesson learned on my part. But should I chase him down and claw back the candy? Maybe, maybe not.

LOL - we do this because we participate in our church's trunk or treat, so we are never home to pass out candy. This year someone not only took all the candy, they took the bowl as well

I guess next year I'll leave get a big bowl from Dollar Tree and then I don't care if they take it!

With all of this Amex ridiculousness going on, I just went full preemptive strike and transferred my remaining MR to my Hilton account. I thought I only had 38k+ MR left after yesterday's Hilton transfer, but there were 60k+ in my account today, so I just turned them into 120k Hilton points. I know I will use those Hilton points down the line, and I just didn't want to risk losing my MR. With all that being said, my Amex accounts are all still active, as evidenced by the fact that I was able to do the transfer 5 minutes ago, but I feel better having taken full preemptive action just in case. And I totally agree with all of those analogies upstream. Amex is totally batsh*t crazy. I'm also diverting spend this week that would normally have gone on my Amex cards to my Chase cards. I haven't gone so far as to change recurring payments on my BBP to a Chase card because if I don't get shut down, I'll want those payments to stay on the BBP, but any new, non-recurring charges this week are going on my Chase cards while I wait and see on this shutdown craziness.

In other travel-related news, I got my Real ID driver's license today (or I now have the temporary one while I wait for the permanent version to be mailed to me). It was really painless. I had made an appointment online with the DMV a couple of months ago. The DMV was a madhouse today but I was called up to the window almost on the dot of my noon appointment, and the whole process took just about 5 minutes. (I had come prepared with my passport, social security card, bank statement and pay stub.) I'm actually flying each of the next three weekends, so I will use my passport at security until my permanent Real ID arrives.

LOL your candy analogy. The Dell credit would be like if you handed out 2 candy bars when you only meant to give one and then chased the kid down 3 months later to claw it back.

At the risk of actually being pedantic, DoC is not using "pedantic" correctly in that sentence. Petty, nit-picking or doctrinaire would all be accurate, but being pedantic is all about showing off your (often useless) knowledge, not about actually being a stickler about a rule.

I went ahead and booked the DL Hotel a couple months ago when they had a promotion going. My kids would have loved the Marvel hotel, but oh well, maybe another time! Thanks!

We didn't really strategize, we went by midday each time and got in line and always waited 60min even though the wait time was different each day... 60, 90, 120 even. I thought the line moved pretty fast overall, as long as it isn't down. Sorry I can't be more help!

OK Amex is definitely being weird for me. I have only one, the Hilton Biz. As I mentioned, it did not work at the pump on Saturday but I assumed it was just the card reader being weird (a Chase card worked just fine).

I can log into my account and see everything; no issues there.

It's the default/primary card on my Apple Wallet, and this morning before I went to bed, I purchased 3 songs and an album through iTunes. The songs and album are now in my library, they play, no problem. But there still isn't a pending charge for any of them.

And last night I used the card to pay my eBay fees (less than $10). That charge IS pending, so I guess that's good.

All of these things taken together with all the other bizarre news is sort of freaking me out and making me glad I don't have one of the higher fee cards... but I really need Hilton points for Japan. Hoping it all calms down in the next few months.

I have NOT used any of the cash back offers although I had loaded a couple to my card. I guess it's a good thing there were so few I could use!

• @Artygal90 - If you have a lot of SW points and no other SW cards it could be worth keeping one open. I keep 1 SW card open to have the ability to cash out for gift cards if I was every in a pinch. (I happen to have 475k SW points though...so that could be $4,750 in Amazon or Target gift cards in a heartbeat if I lost my job or something and wanted to use the points as a pseudo emergency fund...)food for thoguht... lol!
• @pinkxray - I'm REALLY sorry you're dealing with all of this right now. You're in my prayers. Also - I'd try to appeal for no cancellation fee - perhaps you'll get some sympathy...worth a try?

My new Chase card got approved around 1:07pm on Sunday - I found that pretty odd (as it relates to the timing). I got 8 Mint notification emails while at Universal so that was funny. But it's good to have a new card and MSR heading into the Christmas season!
