I'm sort of kicking myself for not getting the Dolby reserved seats. I'm like a lot of folks who just think IMAX is still the latest and greatest and was wondering why the newer Dobly theater was a few $$ more a ticket. They upgraded the theater sometime after Endgame, and from what I've heard it's got subwoofers under each seat as well as a ton of the Atmos speakers. My IMAX theater has a pretty decent set-up with leather recliners, but it's not a full size IMAX screen ... the newer Dolby set-up is probably the superior experience.

If Ep 9 is pretty decent, it'll probably be a good opportunity to catch it again and do a theater comparison
Yeah, I think the marketing of naming it the "Dolby Digital Theater" was a poor choice, since every theater since the 90s has had Dolby and most went digital 15 years ago. But the product is amazing. Massive subs on the ceiling, and I think under each seat. Then huge speaker arrays. The picture is also significantly better than normal, but not IMAX format.

I am going to the 6 PM IMAX show - best seats in the house too! We don't have a true "Dolby Digital" theater - some Atmos ones and one our local theater chain calls MXT (which is very similar to IMAX without the branding). Anyway, for this, we all felt IMAX was the best choice available.

So what time is everyone going to see IX? I couldn't get tickets to our thursday showing when they first released but after I purchased tickets for friday they opened more theaters to show it thursday. I'm guessing I'll need to avoid the internet thursday night as we don't see it until 4:30 on friday, I think.

8:15 Thursday night, XDX.

TFA did >$900M North America and >$1B outside it for the >$2B total. The few movies like Avengers Endgame that have done more than that have a much larger figure outside North America. Endgame was <$900M NA, >$1.9B RoW. It did nearly as much outside of NA as TFA did total.

I wouldn’t expect IX to top $2B. The RoW (well... China namely) doesn’t care about SW as much as we do.

Yea and using Domestic gave me the same anticipation.

$936M and #1 showed the power it (Star Wars) had behind it.

I expected 9 to break $1B Domestic, as surely the climax ending to the entire saga would have amazing anticipation.

Then 8 kinda sank things IMO, and did $620.

Not expecting a lot from 9 now, but holding out a new hope.

I got seats for our local IMAX theatre as it is the closest and largest auditorium for the most seat options. But I plan to go to the Dolby theatre to see it again at some point during its run

Star Wars movies have typically gone down for the second movie and only slightly up for the third (Domestic Only for OT)

A New Hope
Domestic: $460,998,507
Worldwide: $775,512,064

The Empire Strikes Back
Domestic: $290,271,960 - Down 37%
Worldwide: $547,879,454 - Down 29%

Return of the Jedi
Domestic: $309,306,177 - Up 7%, Down 33% from Ep IV
Worldwide: $475,347,111 - Down 13%, Down 39% from Ep IV

The Phantom Menace
Domestic: $474,544,677
Worldwide: $1,027,082,707

Attack of the Clones
Domestic: $310,676,740 - Down 35%
Worldwide: $649,436,358 - Down 37%

Revenge of the Sith
Domestic: $380,270,577 - Up 22%, Down 20% from Ep I
Worldwide: $850,035,635 - Up 31%, Down 17% from Ep I

If that pattern holds, Rise of Skywalker should do well, maybe slightly better than The Last Jedi but nowhere near The Force Awakens.

The Force Awakens:
Domestic: $936,662,225
Worldwide: $2,068,223,624

The Last Jedi:
Domestic: $620,181,382 - Down 34%
Worldwide: $1,332,539,889 - Down 36%

Things look in line so far. It will be interesting to see what unfolds. Numbers are form Box Office Mojo - feel free to reference this post.

^ Thanks for the figures!

I think it's important to put into perspective just how many tickets a $900M domestic performance is. If we're averaging $10/ticket in the Domestic market, that's 90 million tickets sold. I know there's repeat viewers and all that, but there's only 366 million people in the US+Canada. Even backing out some for repeat viewers, that's saying >20% of the population (1 in 5 people) went to the theater to see that movie. It's staggering. That's why even as popular as Endgame was, even it hit a ceiling. $1B Domestic would take another few years of ticket price increases... or maybe something people seek out in 3D like an Avatar 2. (I prefer Star Wars not in 3D... it's more of a gimmick than the intended viewing format.)

I like 3D when the movie is 100% made for it like Avatar. I don't like the cheap conversions they do on a lot of movies. If someone wants to make a true 3D Star Wars, I'm game.

Star Tours: The Movie? :P

I'll only bother with 3D if it's a theater with the active glasses. The passive disposable ones never work as well and it's just not worth it.

during all the tracking of how End Game was doing really hit me just how big of a phenomenon The Force Awakens is ... so if Episode IX falls short of it (and I think it likely will) I think it is more to do with just how high a bar Ep VII set vs that Ep IX did poorly. Now, if Ep IX doesn't hit Last Jedi numbers that is a different story - capper of the 9 part saga should at least beat that

Good info,

So the 3rd was down 33% and down 20% Domestic.

This would put 9 at either $627 or $748M. I guess that should be about right.

I was also thinking/wondering why Avengers did so much more with End Game being the highest.

Also Lord of the Rings went up each release.

I'm thinking good story telling has progressed over the years and decades, some just better than others.

It's so hard to compare to what Marvel has done, which is unprecedented in cinema history. That said, not every Marvel film goes up if you take them as a whole. Age of Ultron went down, as is typical for sequels. It seems to vary based on reception, and Endgame was not just the culmination of like 25 movies, it was very well received.

The release of The Empire Strikes Back occurred at the worst possible time. It came out right as the US Economy was contracting by 8% It was a short recession, but it really contributed to a large part of the decline from A New Hopes numbers.

I see what ya did there.....

Our theater doesn't even have IMAX but my techie hubby loves seeing movies there with the leather reclining seats. OUr only options were RealD 3D and Digital. I opted for the Digital.

As I have no access to a theater I am tryin to decide if I should just read the spoilers or go into hermit mode til it is available to watch online.

I was figuring worst case you could pick up the novelization, but it looks like that isn't getting released until March 2020. I'd just go with reading the spoilers. There were a couple seasons of Game of Thrones where I waited for the Blu-Rays and there was no way I could avoid the spoilers for that long

Read spoilers....I have a million theaters around me and I won't even buy a ticket until I read the spoilers. After the last junk I need to know its worth my time and money.

anyone else pick up a copy of Star Wars: Resistance Reborn?

I am about 30% of the way done and interesting read so far and looks like it will help set the state for the movie well - It picks up very shortly after the events of Episode VIII
