Wanted to post my experience from yesterday. Got boarding group 88. Could not get the join boarding group to turn red at first despite having little issue at home. No signal that I was a part of a back up boarding group. Waited all day and was lucky to be called at 7:40pm. They called up to 90 by park closing so no release. We had to wait it out until nearly park close. There was a long delay at around 0830 for about an hour. Snacks were handed out but I was able to get on and off by 0950. Luckily we found a friendship boat willing to take us back to the swan and dolphin. Otherwise we would have had to walk. Great ride! Just different experience then what I’ve read here with BGs being called up until park close.
Just curious, was the Skyliner not working when you left? Don't know if that would have been quicker to take to Epcot entrance then walk the rest or not.
Does anyone know ... have there been days when they’ve gotten through every backup BG? If that happens, do they add more - or just shut the ride down for the day?
They definitely are not adding new groups if they make it through all the rest.

The insanity of this process just keeps getting crazier and I’m extremely grateful that we had a relatively painless process back in January. We had BG59 and got stalled in line for about a half hour but weren’t evacuated and ended up getting through the whole attraction with what to me seemed like everything as intended. I feel so bad for people who are following the procedure but missing out on the attraction due to app issues and not getting a BG at all or getting one but having it not called due to a bad operations day. Some people only have one shot on a once in a lifetime or once every several years trip and it would be so disheartening to do everything you need to and not getting to ride. Especially when you hear about people who have already ridden multiple times but keep going back because they need to beat their BG number or just want to ride as many times as they can. I may be in the minority, but with demand inevitably being high for a long time, I think they need to look into putting some kind of limit in place. CMs are blocked out, so why not some kind of block out that keeps you from being able to get a BG on back-to-back days? Repeat riders may not be a huge percentage of the masses in the mornings, but it might help a bit. I don’t know, but it’s just crazy.

Can someone explain this new Slinky Dog rope drop procedure? How would one potentially get in the Slinky dog pre-filled queue and avoid the Land queue?

Be there very early :)

I think all it means is that when they let people into the park they let the first few people into the outside extended queue first. When that fills up they hold people right before the land like a regular rope drop. Since it is first come first served, it basically means the first couple hundred people (or how many fit in the extended queue) wait there instead of with the mass of people.

It won't change the wait times but theoretically makes it safer when the large crowd needs to narrow down into the narrower queue.

We were at HS yesterday (Saturday 2/15) and the crowds were HUGE. Here is our experience:

Left GDT at 6:47 a.m. in rental car
Through parking gates at 6:55 a.m.
No line at bag check
Went to the far right along construction fence
Tapped in by 7:20
Headed to TSL and were in line for rope drop right next to the blue GET umbrella
Opened apps at 7:57 and left them on the home page (had 4 phones trying)
Youngest DS had time.gov on his phone and did the countdown for us
At 8 a.m. we all clicked “Find Out More” and quickly hit “My Status”
Both BIL and I got an active “Join Boarding Group” button
Both clicked it and then clicked “Select All”
BIL’s phone and service beat mine
He got us BG 7.
He had an android phone on GoogleFi. I was using DHs iPhone 7 on AT&T. The other 2 phones did not get through.
People around us were getting BGs in the 50s, 80s and 90s. They were getting them maybe 10 seconds after us. I have no idea how we got so lucky to have BG 7.

Hope our experience helps someone!

Yeah, definitely should make actual rope drop safer .... Fear that now people will show up earlier and earlier knowing there is a benefit to doing so now

Get there earlier than everyone else and be at the front of the masses heading to TSL. Then, they take the front of THAT to prefill the queue. That's from how I read it.

So I’m torn about whether there should be a limit as to back to back BGs or keeping it as is. I will be going to HS twice on our trip. What if I’m successful at snagging a BG but get a B experience. I won’t know unless I get another chance at it on my other HS day (which will be 4 days later).

And then I read Experiences like this:
BG 21 on Thursday 2/13.

TY everyone for all assistance here! I'd never been to HS or much to Disney at all and not for ~ 10 years. Started from scratch several months back planning, downloading MDE, learning it, etc. So if I can do it, there should be hope for all, and MTFBWY. Love Star Wars and loved all the SW stuff at HS and will go back; feel very fortunate got a BG and for the whole day and experience.

Here’s someone who has not been to WDW in 10 years. Not obsessed with all things Disney and gets involved in all the details like many of us Disers here. And they did all the necessary research to ensure they got the most out of their one trip here. The information is out there for anyone that seeks it out. So it seems like whoever can get there should be able to ride, whether it’s their first or fourth time. Maybe limit it to just 2 days in a row but not 3? I don’t know. Just spitballing here.

Now, this is different than what many are experiencing these last few days. For everyone that got there in plenty of time, had the app and tried to get a BG and couldn’t because they’re all distributed in 70 seconds? And then there’s still a chance you won’t get on because the ride isn’t reliable? That’s just poor show. Unbelievably frustrating. And not fair.

Today was our big day after months of excitement and practicing at home. Despite doing everything right, we got backup BG 69. It’s insanely crowded and unfortunately not a great day for ROTR. Doesn’t look like we’re going to ride. Very disappointed but we’ll try again Thursday and are hoping to do better on a non-weekend. Details: we had one iPhone 8 and one 6. Closed the app, opened at 7:56. Tapped find out more at exactly 8:00:00. Had to select 5 people from our family. I couldn’t remove the other 11 from our list because they’re all on the trip with us. I went as fast as I could but I think that’s what did us in. Think good thoughts for us on Thursday!

I arrived at 6:40AM yesterday and today and made it into the pre-filled SDD queue (right about at the halfway point) both times. When the land opened, both days took about 15 minutes until we were boarding our Slinky.

That being said, I'm a solo Traveller so I was able to weave and Bob through the crowd more easily. Also, they had construction at the turnstiles, so I was able to use the "keep right" strategy to move faster than any of the other lines despite being farther back.

However it was crazy busy both days so your dates may not be as crowded as President's Day weekend so a 6:40am arrival might balance out.

Who knows though. I think a 6:30 arrival is good to be safe and 6:40 if you're able to be more nimble
