Is anyone worried that there won’t be a vaccine by next March Break?

I had to cancel our trip this year and we planned to go again next March Break instead. I am really worried it still might not be safe to be in big crowds if there is no vaccine or still hotspots given the way things are exploding all over North America. We will be booking with DVC points that could be put back and banked if cancelled, but might not book any flights that can’t be cancelled with no penalty. Are others worried this might not end anytime soon.

Hi Hon
I am in the same boat (DVC member),,I am not sure what to do.
I am definitely not booking any flights right now.

Hugs
Mel

We are planning on going next March too on our DVC points. If we don’t go we will also cancel and bank the points.

For flights I may hold off for now... Air Canada is the only company I would consider booking. I think they have the greatest shot of surviving this.

Yeah, I would normally be booking flights for March 2021 right now, but not this year. We moved this year's cruise to next year in hopes that things will be a go, but if by Oct things are still iffy, I'll be cancelling for refund. I can't see them cancelling next year's sailing and giving us another 15 months to book beyond that. And truthfully, if they aren't sailing by next March, they might not be sailing ever again.

WDW - same thing. I think they have a better chance for recovery because people don't have to be in such close quarters all the time, but changes will have to be made. Start with the number of people allowed in at any one time. Those "all day" tickets might end up changing to morning, afternoon or night tickets with limited numbers in the parks. Great for getting on the rides, but not great for those that like to tour all day.

Wow I am amazed how far in advance a lot of you book trips. Whenever I book trips its 3 months in advance. 6 months at most.

Same. For March break, we typically book right when flights open up. But now don't know what to do.
We have WestJet flights for our August trip to Disney + Royal cruise, which 90% we will be cancelling.
We lost our porter flights this past march break. We rebooked the cruise for Dec, but holding off flights as not sure that cruise will be a go.
And so do we wait for March break? Typically the price goes up exponentially. Ugh.

I am also worried this might not end anytime soon. We (of course) would like to plan a trip for next year since we had to cancel this year, but I am in no rush to book anything. CBC said today that emergency and public health measures could be in place for some time to come.

We are hoping for a January 2021 trip (late January/early February) but I'm not sure we will go. We have old Canadian discount tickets and my oldest turns 10 next September. I'd like to go before then. Then again, if our biggest pain from all this is losing the discount from one ticket, we will be lucky and count our blessings.

I can't believe the number of people that want to go to WDW in June or this summer. I'd worry way too much about getting sick!! We won't decide on January now. But I'm also not booking flights for a long time.

There absolutely will not be a vaccine by next March. The first human trials JUST started. They have to be followed for a full 12 months before they can even begin to decide whether to go ahead with final production, release etc... They have said 18 months minimum, which puts us into next September.

We have to book DVC trips 11 months out from home resorts in order to get certain accommodations. Since all my points were put into my 2020 use year, with a Dec date, I can book using 2020 points and if I cancel, they will go back to 2020 and can be banked to 2021. I won’t be borrowing form 20201 however as they would stay in 2020 and could not be banked.

Very true. For our part, we are waiting to see how things look. Maybe it will be safe to go to WDW next winter. Maybe not. I think it's too early to say (for us). On the other hand, I know I would not feel safe there this summer. If we feel this way next winter - based on what experts are saying - we won't go.

We're hoping for June '21, but we'll wait and see. So many unknowns and variables.

There won't be a vaccine by next March.

There MIGHT be a reliable treatment, though.
Several sources I have read have indicated that 'about a year' is reasonable to get a vaccine to market, so it is possible.

By next March, a large part of the population will have been exposed as well, so there is a bit of the herd immunity going on by then. Those who have been exposed and survived will, they think, probably have immunity for a while (1-2 years is best guess). Also, since their immune system has responded in the past, it is likely that the 2nd time will not be as severe. Not that I would wish this on anyone, but exposure and survival does have its privileges.

ETA: our accommodation for next March is already in place since we own a March break timeshare. We are certainly hoping to be able to take advantage of it and enjoy a week away.

We are in the same position! Have a Westjet credit and a DCL credit would like to cruise next March Break. Going to book a cruise but may cancel before the PIF if things do not look good. Might hold off on flights as well.

Hi! 😊

If I were in your shoes I would likely cancel my WestJet flights for August and use the credit for March Break.

I have WestJet credit from March Break this year. I am hoping for December or next March Break.

Regarding the OP of the thread. With what I know now I would go to WDW without a vaccine.

Here in Vancouver I think my DD and I possibly already had coronavirus. So many people coming home from China after Chinese New Year, including a classmate of my daughter. Our symptoms were very similar to the mild symptoms described.

The median age of coronavirus death here in BC is 85. That is higher than life expectancy.

It seems like the people most affected around the world have compromised lungs.

My Dad is high-risk. He wouldn’t want to shut my daughter’s world down indefinitely. It will lead to a severe recession if not a depression if it goes on too long.

Eventually we will likely need to look at the data to better protect those who are high risk, whatever their age, and let the majority of people live outside the best they can. At least in a limited fashion at first. A bit more than grocery stores and drive thrus.

Can I ask, how long did you have your mild symptoms and was there a "feeling better" period before getting worse again?
