Is anyone else worried about opening up again

TN: while out governor has decided to begin reopening, we’ll stay home. Our county leads the state in diagnosed cases, and people have largely disregarded the safer at home orders. I try to run errands once a week and stores are always packed. Earlier this month the news showed that local parks were packed. I’m concerned that we’ll get a nasty second wave due to stupidity.

That is a good question - the PP did not specify. Agree that full PPE is not required, though I would want any doctor treating me for anything right now to be wearing a mask.
Though I'm not the original poster who brought up the PPE concerns when I was thinking of minute clinics (that I brought up) and flu shots I was thinking masks and gloves both of which are components to PPE;. I wasn't thinking gloves and masks and face shields and gowns and goggles and other such things as the full alphabet soup lol on at once to administer a flu shot. PPE isn't an all or nothing. My husband wears PPE when he's on site for power plants but that doesn't always include safety goggles or steel toed boots or even a hard hat. Just depends on the project. A safety hazard vest is pretty standard though.

Given my experience with Urgent care it's a toss up if the person has worn a mask or not when entering the room. Every year when I've had blood taken with my wellness exam for my husband's health insurance masks have not been worn at either Quest Diagnostics and Walgreens; gloves yes but masks no. But during this time and the first initial flu season I can see the desire (not requirement but the desire to I feel like I need to stress that for some reason) to wear a mask (though both on the person getting the shot and the person giving the shot honestly) to be higher than previously considered. I don't think a mask may be necessary in the future for day to day life but there might be places that become more prudent to do so for this upcoming flu season.

Also in TN—major metro area but have fewer cases. We will not be going out either for at least 4 weeks to see what happens...

If health care organizations feel there is still a risk or that people are unlikely to come to get shots or other healthcare if they're anxious, then they likely will continue to require masks. From everyone. It could be that the next time masks aren't going to be part of our lives is a year from now, after next year's flu season ends. But who knows. I think it will all depend on what the Covid numbers look like. I just hope that some of the sanitary processes that people put into place for covid will continue with Influenza; we could make those numbers look better too if we tried.

Where would this be more prudent? Why should healthcare providers have to wear a mask? Have you worn one for 13 hours straight? It's miserable you get sores on your nose, behind your ears, they are hot and suffocating. Humans have survived millions of years without wearing masks.

I'd be willing to discuss with you if you wouldn't keep going to extremes as if that's the only possible thing anyone could be talking about :)

I’m in Georgia and not looking forward to places opening up on Friday.
Nothing like being the guinea pig ......

Our numbers have been growing...

I plan to stay at home and watch the reports on tv the next two weeks before I venture out of my house.

If I misunderstood you could just explain what you meant without be condescending....or correcting grammar.

It doesn't make for much of a discussion. Respectfully, I'll just leave it at that.

I am worried and wish we could just stick to at least the original plan of at least one more month. Give businesses more time to get some procedures in place. I will continue to stay home for now but I do feel more prepared and thoughtful about distancing and wearing a mask etc than I was when this all started. I also have seen many businesses and people put more protective measures in place so I think as long as that continues to improve, I’ll eventually feel more comfortable getting out again.

Although I am not in Georgia, I agree. Here in Montreal, hotspot; numbers, deaths are going up, and we are firmly planted in our homes. Nightly walks after the sun goes down, although it’s freezing, 🙃

i don’t want to see any numbers go up anywhere. I hope you all stay safe and healthy.👩‍❤️‍💋‍👩

I wish that healthcare organizations would act as you suggest. But at this point they aren’t.
DD is a pharmacist. She was not initially permitted to wear a mask. At some point a non medical manager had the pharmacy masks collected. Then about four weeks ago she was issued a mask and a brown paper bag, for storage. She is still using the same mask, can’t get a new one. There is no way to tell how effective it still is after close to 200 hours of use.
DSIL works in a hospital cardiac catheterization lab. Until recently they were required to perform procedures with little PPE. They were doing things that would have gotten them fired under normal circumstances. Expediency and cost seemed to trump good practice during times when good practice is clearly necessary.

While I don't disagree with what you're saying, you can't get a Flu shot for next Flu season right now.

I didn’t say you could. The poster I quoted was claiming that statements advocating for people to get the vaccine this fall were fear-mongering.

I said there’s nothing wrong with encouraging people to get it, and I assumed everyone understood that I was likewise referring to when it’s available. I’m sorry I wasn’t more clear.

Masks have been shown to reduce the spread of the virus. Since healthcare workers giving flu shots will be seeing many patients a day, they could easily contract the disease. Therefore, they are highly likely to be carriers, either prior to the onset of symptoms or asymptomatic. Hence, wearing a mask would help prevent them from both contracting the virus as well as from infecting patients since they obviously have to be in close contact.

Of course wearing masks for long periods is uncomfortable, but the health of patients and healthcare staff takes priority over discomfort. I’ve been making “button bands” for nurses and doctors to alleviate chafing from mask straps. I can send you directions if you like. Heck, if you PM me your address, I’d be more than happy to send you some.

I wonder if they can get their hands on UV light. Various places are using that to santize the masks as they provide cleansing without deterioration of the material.

In my county they've basically converted or built cabinets to use. Two of the sanitizing cabinets are at two county fire department locations and one is at the county's Med-Act location. Another one that is bigger than the others is being built on site at the county crime lab facility. They are being used for first responders at the moment. It was more or less on the fly creation. Stainless steel cabinets with UV lights added inside.

It's pretty awful really just thinking about how so many front line workers have to do without or are using something well beyond it's lifespan :(

Do you realize how many businesses won’t make it another month? A lot of people will lose their jobs permanently. ☹️

The goal was to #flattenthecurve.

I have to ask all of those who opposed the lockdowns and compare what Sweden did. Over there most practiced social distancing, stayed home from work when sick and groups of more then 50 were banned. Do you think most Americans would follow those rules if they didn't lock every one down?

I want to see the actual numbers of people in Georgia that will go to Salons (hair & nail).
Who would risk themselves for that?
Tattoos? really???
I think people are going to be more responsible.
The people that are asking to re-open for work purposes, may find that no one comes into their establishments and it was a waste of time and money to re-open.

I agree - we need to open back up the states when possible, but when we are past the curve. That means different dates for different states based on many factors. But the "flatten the curve" goal was not the only goal. We were also buying time to prepare better testing so we could implement contact tracing once we opened things back up. Not sure we are there yet. Hopefully we are close enough that we are there in a few weeks when we start opening states back up.

Well, Atlanta is not opening back up, so this is really only applying to rural GA residents.
