The Running Thread - 2020

July Miles: 117.3
2020 Miles: 606.4

I know I’m late reporting my July miles, so consider this a virtual race report too...

In July I continued my first @DopeyBadger plan for a local half marathon that was scheduled for today. I was hoping for a new PoT for Marathon Weekend, but as I’m sure you can guess, it was cancelled. They gave us the option of running it virtually or deferring to 2021. Since the best part about this race is the course, I opted for the deferral. However, I had signed up for the virtual Seawheeze half marathon the same weekend.

I loved the variety of paces and intervals in my DB plan! It made training fun instead of a chore. I think it also helped with overuse injuries.

I am a treadmill runner so gauging fitness during a virtual race is hard. I picked a pace hoping I could speed up at some point, which didn’t happen. However, I did manage to run all 13.1 treadmill miles without slowing down (just my usual 1 min walk break per mile). My treadmill time was 2:23:02 while my Garmin footpod said I ran 13.7 miles... which puts my half time at 2:16:45. My half PR is 2:22:07, so assuming my actual pace is somewhere in between, I consider that a win!

Next up...Dopey training! 🤞

I ran my first Disney virtual 5k this morning in order to earn the 2019 Iron Man medal I bought on eBay. I finished in 36:33, which isn't a great time, but considering that up to this point I have primarily been walking to get in shape, I'll take it.

Again, mostly walking, but...

August 2020: 65.97 miles / 106.2 km

2020 total: 539.1 miles / 867 km

Hello everyone! It's been a lonnngggg time! Hope everyone is doing well and running injury free. 2020 is aging me, as I am sure it has to yall as well. The good news... we moved back to Baton Rouge a few weeks ago, kids school is open and we have been blessed enough to stay working. Fingers crossed those stay the same.
Some exciting fun stuff going on... I am building a wood fired oven / brick oven / pizza oven (whatever name you wanna call it lol). Anyway, got the slab poured this weekend and the prep and pour reminded me just how out of shape I am. A guy is gonna have to dust off the ole running shoes and get back to it. Hope to get back to more regular posting sooner than later. I miss yall and our running and other random discussions. Stay safe and happy runs!

Ha. Almost ended up doing this race too. Looks like I don't live too far from you. We are in south Forsyth county (essentially Johns Creek).

While you missed your goal time, glad you had a great race (and actually got to participate in a real race)!
I'm up in Banks County (pretty close to Jaemor Farms, if you're familiar). When times get back to normal, we should do a North Georgia DISer group run/meet-up.

Thanks! I was pretty happy with the results. The goal was somewhat arbitrary, so missing it wasn't too big of a deal. A bigger deal is that I've got to come to terms with the fact that my PR days are behind me.

You came back and didn’t even bring a QOTD?? Sheesh

Good to see you again :)

@OldSlowGoofyGuy i don’t believe they are. Plus I think I will need you at the Huntsville race. I think that is where the marathon starts first and half after that. I may need pacing partner to get me back to Boston.

on a side note up in Ohio this week and dang something brought in some nice weather. After an 11 hour car ride yesterday I still had a good run today. Might have something to do with T + D of 122 compared to 148.

YET ANOTHER ACTUAL LIVE IN PERSON RACE REPORT!!

Be Happy 10K
Windsor, CT August 16, 2020 8AM

As I have been mentioning in my monthly updates, I have been a following a few smaller races that have been working with state and local officials to get approval. This one got got the OK at the end of July and I immediately registered. The field was split into 4 waves of 50 people with each wave going off 45 minutes apart. There were markings at the starting line where we could stand while waiting to start. Masks were required at all times and at the starting line but could be removed once on the course. There was one self service water station (plastic water bottles) on the course and a water bottle station at the start/finish area. All registration was online with no race day registration. No ceremony at the end - awards to be mailed out. They did hand out medals at the finish and shirts/goodie bag on your way to your car. Most people left right after their wave but some hung around to watch other waves start/finish.

As for the race itself, the course was a hilly out and back with most of the big uphills on the way out which made it a bit easier coming back in. I was in wave 1 and finished third in my wave ironically right behind the same guy who finished 2nd just ahead of me in the 5K I ran last month. But there were a few faster runners in the subsequent waves and when all the timings were ironed out and posted, I ended up finishing 8th overall and 1st in my age group. My goal was to set a new 10K PR and break 44:00. I finished with a time of 42:53 - 6:54/mile which is my new 10K personal best!!

Next up, I am watching/waiting/hoping for a few longer Fall races - a 10 miler and a few half marathons - that say are still working on getting approval. I will also be starting my Dopey training soon with the hopes that marathon weekend happens. If Dopey happens, I plan to race the 10K and Half with the hopes of placing in my age group in at least one of the races. I think chances are increased if the races continue with a reduce field. With my time today, I would have finished 2nd in my age group at last January’s 10K.

Plus I think I will need you at the Huntsville race. I think that is where the marathon starts first and half after that. I may need pacing partner to get me back to Boston.
D**n! I was not expecting that. Suddenly, my life has purpose.

Rocket City is 'my' race. Yep, HM starts exactly 2 hours after the full.

Give me a pace. Thinking your BQ pace is faster than my PR pace. 1:50:53 (8:28) last year. Just to be clear: I'm pacing the last half?

Oh, and @DopeyBadger be on standby. December 11th.

I’m a little confused at how it all works and how long it’ll take, but I might be interested.
After reading everything on the website, I think it’s actually pretty simple. Each week, all team members log their miles for the week (honor system), and once your team gets to 30,167 miles, you have finished. As they state, this is more a journey than a race. For rough numbers, let’s assume all team members log an average of 100 miles per month. With 10 team members, that would be 1,000 miles per month, so the “relay” would take about 30 months total (2.5 years). Granted, after every region (~2,500 miles) is finished, there is an opportunity to change the team up if needed (injuries, departures, etc.). Basically, you just keep training as you would, and all your miles count towards this relay as well.

Anyone else terrified when they clicked the link and they saw that the Barkley Marathon organizer is the mind behind this series?

Ok. That’s the way I read it, too. The scale and apparent time involved to complete it made me think I was reading something incorrectly. I’d definitely be game if we wanted to put a team together.

YES!!! It pretty much had me at "Laz..." ♥ I don't exactly get it, but I'm 100% okay with trusting that you do lol! I'm good for a pretty consistent 60-70ish miles a month, more when marathon training. Please keep me in the loop!
Okay, folks. Let's see if this goes anywhere. I am happy to create a team, but the two most important questions are: (i) can we fill a team of 10, and (ii) what should our team name be? So far, I have only come up with one potential name, but with this creative group, I'm sure we will have several good options
  • "DATW" - for DISing Around The World of course - named after one of the greatest of all DIS rD MW Monday traditions (which unfortunately I have never attended) and honoring @Keels who I think started it (@FFigawi may have also had some part in this tradition)
For those of you wondering what the heck this is all about, here are some of the key details of the virtual relay around the world:
  • Circumpolar Race Around the World (http://craw.racing)
  • Event Organizer: Lazarus Lake (Laz) - creator of the Barkley Marathons
  • Starts: September 1st
  • Ends: whenever your team completes 30,176 miles (48,550 km) - split into 12 regions (segments)
    • this will likely take about two years to complete all 12 regions, but obviously it depends on the accumulation rate of our team mileage
    • at the end of each region/segment (~2,500 miles each), we are allowed to stop completely or change team members, if needed (injuries, departures, etc.)
  • Team: up to 10 members, but can have less
  • Fee: no more than $40 per person per region
    • Region 1 is $40 each (Latin America - 2,491 miles)
    • you don't pay for the next region until you get there and decide to proceed
    • if we get several of the high-mileage runners on this board to participate, I estimate that each region should take us about two months, so that would be a max of $40 every other month for those who want to remain on the team
  • Week (for mileage posting purposes): Monday through Sunday
  • Medals: there will be a medal for each region. When you have completed your journey, there will be a world puzzle into which your pieces will fit to show your complete journey around the earth
  • T-Shirt: yes
Additional thoughts/items:
  • It's not a normal relay in the sense that one person doesn't run, then the next, etc., but rather we all just log our normal running miles each week and see where that gets us on our journey
    • I have seen a lot of discussion on this board lately about lack of motivation (mainly due to race cancellations or weird changes in our schedules since March), so this may be a good motivating factor in additional to any races you are training for
  • You do not need a GPS watch as you can manually add miles into the system
  • I plan on registering a "running only" team (vs. cycling/multisport team) which means all miles must be ran or walked (treadmill miles count as well)
  • There is no "winning" - this is just for fun. As the website states, "this is not so much a race, as a journey, and an adventure."
  • To finish in two years (although I don't think there is a deadline), as a team we would need to average 1,257 miles per month (~126 miles per person per month with a full 10-person roster)
If you are interested, please reply on this thread. If we have enough interest and once we pick a team name, then I will set up a team account. I will then PM all interested folks the team password such that they can join.

I'm game to join if you need people. Although my level of creativity is slightly more than nil, so I won't be much help on the team name!

You can officially count me in if we can populate a full team. With walking miles included, I can bring 200-250 mpw for the foreseeable future. I don’t have any cool ideas for team names, but I’m sure there’s something good out there related to Dopey Around the World (DATW), “We Know the Way”, “Life is a Highway” or something similar.
