News Round Up 2020

They have told this to at least a half dozen people on the DVC boards here. It looks like maybe the plan is to do this annually? In any case it seems crazy to me with a virtually-all-studio Disneyland resort in the near future to force a 125 point minimum purchase - few people will be able to use that many points at DLR.
Unless it cost 35-45 points per night or more there... Honestly wouldn't be surprised.

I don't really follow DVC news in any kind of detail. Are they looking to give benefits to owners that buy in for a week length stay?

I've said this elsewhere, but in my mind, the two most significant direct incentives are the AP (specifically Gold) and Moonlight Magic... We honestly don't know the future of either of these benefits at the moment. They are going to need to explain what makes this many direct points attractive to justify the increase.

At those point prices you’d be far better off paying cash for a room. DLH is priced more like Wilderness Lodge than Grand Floridian.

Currently there are escalating cash discounts for buying more and more points. They don’t sell weeks like traditional timeshares, it’s more flexible than that. Then if you buy your points from Disney rather than buying a “used” contract they throw in a variety of benefits that are of varying utility and value, and which can be rescinded at any time.

For at least the short term, there is no Moonlight Magic benefit:

Yeah we took advantage of the incentives and added on 175 points at Copper Creek a few weeks ago. We’ve only purchased points on property or on a cruise prior, so this was a vastly different experience, waiting almost 3 weeks to close whereas if you buy in person it’s basically instantaneous. But the deals right now were good and with CCV still available we jumped at it.

If my life timing was just [holds fingers super close together] this much different, we’d be CCV owners too. But here we are, and I look forward to buying SSR and BCV [sighs heavily] eventually.

I hear you, we would probably be watching resale on AKV to pick up a contract there, except we just bought a house. We already have 250 points at CCV so it's not like we are deprived. Would just love a contract at Animal Kingdom too.

Maybe a general public discount coming too? I can’t believe they are charging full price. Pop for $200/night. I have a hard time believing that if they actually want to fill any additional rooms they are doing it at that price.

I completely agree! We were planning on booking at Pop, but for $195/night, we are back to considering options. I love Pop, but we're looking at paying more than we did two years ago during peak season, with a dining plan and an extra day in the park. That's hard to justify when they aren't meeting capacity.

I mean I know how DVC works pretty well, I just don't follow DVC news on a daily/monthly basis closely. My point is that are they looking to create a "minimum" that matches with the average point count for a weekly stay. Disney's point chart give you a "Weekly" number.

I get the concept -- you "require" people to buy more points to make more money .. but uhh .. with the tourism industry tanked for the year (and probably beyond) . shouldn't you be offering perks to get people to buy into DVC? Not essentially increasing the minimum price?

Won't this just drive people to resale?

There may be a pent up demand for it .. but until things normalize, are people really buying into new DVC? (I am guessing there is a probably a ton of sellers and the resale market is potentially good?)

I think they are doing it to temporarily boost sales. They've done it twice in recent years. (from 50 to 75 then from 75 to 100) The problem is at a certain point it will drive people away. You are now looking at $19,000 (with incentives) to get perks, and it will become $21,875 (with incentives) to get perks. Crazy considering a few years ago you could spend about $7500 to get perks.
