The Running Thread - 2020

If you are interested, please reply on this thread. If we have enough interest and once we pick a team name, then I will set up a team account. I will then PM all interested folks the team password such that they can join.

I'd be interested. My only hesitation is that I seem to injure myself every 4-5 months, knocking me out for a month or so. I should be coming back from my latest injury for the start of September so I'm at least ready to go for the first leg!

Sounds like something that would be fun to do, but my monthly totals are no where near what would be needed to do this. Now if the organizer would be willing to increase team size I would be joining the group of you.

@camaker cant we have a multisport team? I will be cycling as much as running over the next 2-3 years.
Probably a better question for @opusone. He’s the CRAWdad here. I’m just looking to play!
@FFigawi: I originally thought about that given the number of multisport athletes here, but I was thinking that a running-only team made the most sense because (i) this is a running board and (ii) if you open it up to multisport, then all miles aren't created equal (i.e. the most miles will likely come from cycling, inline skating, and other such activities as the miles are quicker/easier to log), and then less emphasis will be on running (and even less on swimming). At least with a running-only team, all miles are equal. Does that make sense?

However, since I haven't created the team yet, I am very open to registering as a multisport team instead if that's what folks here want. I'm indifferent... just think it might be something fun to do.

Okay, folks. Let's see if this goes anywhere. I am happy to create a team, but the two most important questions are: (i) can we fill a team of 10, and (ii) what should our team name be? So far, I have only come up with one potential name, but with this creative group, I'm sure we will have several good options
  • "DATW" - for DISing Around The World of course - named after one of the greatest of all DIS rD MW Monday traditions (which unfortunately I have never attended) and honoring @Keels who I think started it (@FFigawi may have also had some part in this tradition)
For those of you wondering what the heck this is all about, here are some of the key details of the virtual relay around the world:
  • Circumpolar Race Around the World (http://craw.racing)
  • Event Organizer: Lazarus Lake (Laz) - creator of the Barkley Marathons
  • Starts: September 1st
  • Ends: whenever your team completes 30,176 miles (48,550 km) - split into 12 regions (segments)
    • this will likely take about two years to complete all 12 regions, but obviously it depends on the accumulation rate of our team mileage
    • at the end of each region/segment (~2,500 miles each), we are allowed to stop completely or change team members, if needed (injuries, departures, etc.)
  • Team: up to 10 members, but can have less
  • Fee: no more than $40 per person per region
    • Region 1 is $40 each (Latin America - 2,491 miles)
    • you don't pay for the next region until you get there and decide to proceed
    • if we get several of the high-mileage runners on this board to participate, I estimate that each region should take us about two months, so that would be a max of $40 every other month for those who want to remain on the team
  • Week (for mileage posting purposes): Monday through Sunday
  • Medals: there will be a medal for each region. When you have completed your journey, there will be a world puzzle into which your pieces will fit to show your complete journey around the earth
  • T-Shirt: yes
Additional thoughts/items:
  • It's not a normal relay in the sense that one person doesn't run, then the next, etc., but rather we all just log our normal running miles each week and see where that gets us on our journey
    • I have seen a lot of discussion on this board lately about lack of motivation (mainly due to race cancellations or weird changes in our schedules since March), so this may be a good motivating factor in additional to any races you are training for
  • You do not need a GPS watch as you can manually add miles into the system
  • I plan on registering a "running only" team (vs. cycling/multisport team) which means all miles must be ran or walked (treadmill miles count as well)
  • There is no "winning" - this is just for fun. As the website states, "this is not so much a race, as a journey, and an adventure."
  • To finish in two years (although I don't think there is a deadline), as a team we would need to average 1,257 miles per month (~126 miles per person per month with a full 10-person roster)

I am officially interested. Thanks for the excellent summary and for organizing.

I like this point. As a supporting example, both my husband and I recently did the "Race Across Maryland" challenge: 250 miles. He did it on his indoor bike training set up and finished it in about 2 weeks, and I will have taken almost the 10 available weeks to do that with running miles.

Although, since this includes walking, I will have more mileage.

While I don't plan on participating, I guess I looked at the run-only vs multisport from a cost perspective. The total cost to participate in all 12 regions is no more than $480. Given you only pay as you reach each new region, then that spreads the cost of the event over a period of time. If it were runners only, then it may take 2 years (or maximally $20 a month). Whereas with the inclusion of multisport, it could be done sooner than 2 years. Maybe as quick as 8-10 months. So that would be something like $50-60 per month. That's where my mind went when evaluating the differences between the two options. Obviously someone could always opt out if things are going too quickly, but since the medals conjoin in some way into a giant world puzzle it offers a great incentive to complete the entire series. I'll be excited to cheer everyone on regardless of which way your team goes.

That does make sense. I know my training is run heavy in the winter and bike heavy in the summer, and was trying to find a way to be able to contribute year round.

I would be interested. I finished the GVRAT in the middle of July and am trying to get the 1000 mile pin by Aug-31. I would be fine with either a run team or multi sport. I would probably be good for 200 mpm running and another 100-150 biking.

That does make sense. I know my training is run heavy in the winter and bike heavy in the summer, and was trying to find a way to be able to contribute year round.

Being from Houston myself (are you really from Dubai?), and after taking up my bike this summer due to a running injury, I think favoring the bike in the summer may become my plan too. With the "breeze" generated by cycling, it's a much more pleasant (not sure that's the right word) way to exercise in the summertime heat and humidity.

I'm not a numbers person, so I and my budget are very appreciative of those who worked out costs! @opusone I'll have to opt out, after all - it's just not in the budget, I'm afraid. :(

Yes, I really do live in Dubai. Doing much of anything outdoors here in the summer is rough. Houston was never as hot as it is here, and there was cold beer waiting at the end of every ride. :)

I just registered for a half marathon - scheduled for Nov 1 in RI, with a risk free registration (they only charge your card 1 week before the race assuming all approvals are in place and the race is set to go). It’s in a beautiful location, and timing aligns with a race weekend for a virtual series I’m doing. 🤞🤞

I can't (or maybe don't want to) imagine what "hotter than Houston" feels like. And I definitely don't want to imagine what "no beers available at the end of every ride" feels like! Regardless, I'm sure cycling feels better than running in the heat. And it's probably not a bad idea to take running easy in the summer anyway to give my legs a bit of a break. Cycling also makes it easier for me to pretend I'm a triathlete (just like I already pretend I'm a runner)!
