Fun, uplifting TV shows from the 80s-90s

I have been binge-watching Perfect Strangers, and I am happy that it held up for me with all of the slapstick silliness. Our kids have taken to it, as well, which is nice. (They also liked ALF!). Every generation needs a Balki!

So interesting to watch pre-cell phone life, for one. Hard to imagine! Upbeat theme songs that were fun to sing along with, light-hearted fun, adult topics dealt with in ways that kids don't have to hear any vulgar info, and so on.

TGIF nights really were great for family viewing.

What show or shows could you re-watch right now?

I'd say Wings was probably the only "family friendly"* show on that list.

*depending on the age of the children in your family

Yeah, I love Night Court, but I don't think it really falls into that TGIF style of "family show" - it was more subversive. I mean, I watched it from a pretty young age, but still.

My favorite was The Cosby Show, but, well, yeah....

Haven't watched them in a while, but I would try and see if they still could hold my attention:

Growing Pains
Home Improvement

And like @BrianL, I loved the Cosby Show. I still enjoy it. I know, I know. But it is my childhood. Same with Michael Jackson songs. 😬

Love all these you have mentioned and toss in Fresh Prince. I used to pickup both kids and dance with them to the opening song

Funny thing about Night Court and Cheers, is even though there was a lot of talk about bedroom activity, it was always "sleeping together" or "hopping in the sack" type language. Quite different from today!

Home Improvement is my all-time favorite. :-)

Oh, any of them were MUCH cleaner than today, but Cheers was a later in the evening sitcom designed to appeal to an older audience. To me, the "family sitcom" were the ones that were much cleaner, or when they did address something very mature, it was a "very special episode." It's actually sad that there are very few network shows today that have that same tone.

I really don't care for much of what's on TV these days. So we've gone back and watched full seasons of MASH, Cheers, Home Improvement, ER, Dead Like Me, Friends, Fresh Prince, Scrubs as well as the various Star Treks and Stagate. Heck I rewatch Hogan's Heros which still makes me laugh.

Yeah, a cool thing you can do with streaming is create your own, timeless TV schedule. Instead of binge watching, draw them out, and watch one episode of a certain show on a certain night. Pair up your favorites! It's really kinda cool. Now, if only you could watch the vintage commercials too.

Where have you been able to find Home Improvement? I can’t find who streams it.
