Alec Baldwin shoots/kills cinematographer and injured director after firing a "prop gun".

The French military has some serious guns...no handcuffs. They aren't playing around.
She must be a resident of one of the smaller slower paced island European nations. Most police forces in Europe are armed including Germany. The military men around the French national monuments were likely not military but the French national police who are heavily armed.

The ones I’m talking about were wearing camo and present at the Christmas markets. They were carrying what looked like a bullpup. I assumed military because they were no doubt on another level from the regular police presence

The national police officially carry Sig handguns and HK's now I believe. Here is the Wiki statement-

"More modern long guns like Remington 870, HK UMP and HK G36 are also issued.
Some sources have claimed the use of the Spectre M4 by the French National Police."

The French made a bull pup design (FAMAS) but I don't think officially issued to Police. I read that someone saw Parisian firefighters carrying FMAS bullpups but no idea if true.

There is another national police force (Gendarmes) that are actually part of the military and not civilian.

if you thought they were military then I withdraw and apologize for my comment. My point stands though that the national police in France are not lightly armed and once you get to the police interdiction force then they are now armed sufficiently to respond to AK's.

No need for an apology. I do know there are multiple levels within the police force. My step dad is retired military and lived in Paris for several years. He would've known for sure. Their demeanor was quite different too. This was after Bataclan and security was different from previous visits. My guess was military (actually Gendarmes) but I could easily be wrong.

It's getting rather interesting. There are reports that the movie crew were using the firearms on the set off-hours and just shooting them off in the distance at the ranch where the filming was going on. I get that some people like shooting off guns in the middle of nowhere. So that could explain why there might have been a live round in the gun. Seem really lax that the armorer wouldn't put a stop to that and wouldn't make sure that the guns weren't locked up when not being actively used in filming.

“Working with Hannah, I’m surprised that any of this happened under her watch,” said Crow. “I thought she was an exceptionally young, up-and-coming, very eager and talented armorer. She was without a lot of experience, but coming from her family lineage, I thought she was exceptional, professional, and I thought she had — I still think she has — many years of an amazing career ahead of her.”
Reed grew up on Hollywood sets, often tagging along with her father, a former Marine who served as Brad Pitt’s gun coach on “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford” and served as a quick draw expert on “Django Unchained.” She has said that her favorite childhood memory with her dad was visiting the set of the 2007 film “3:10 to Yuma” when she was around 10.
The prop gun used by Alec Baldwin, that killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on a New Mexico movie set, had reportedly been used by crew members offsite for 'fun'. The gun, which misfired while Baldwin held it on the set of the movie "Rust", may have even been loaded with live rounds when it was supposed to be used for target practice. Various sources claimed that the gun was even fired at off-the-clock gatherings.

I mean...couldn't the same be said of ANY military?
Maybe but they are a bit different. PP mentioned and I'm guessing they were Gendarme. They are a military/civilian force and on a different level. The Carabinieri in Italy carry sub machine guns and are also gendarmerie. Maybe similar to our National Guard but they are not reserve forces. It's just different to what we normally see in the US and it stands apart.

The gun misfired? Is the story changing?

I think misfiring as in firing at all when "cold gun" was called out. There was a previous firing by a stunt double when it wasn't supposed to have anything, although that might have been blanks.

"Misfired" is definitely the wrong word. Misfired means someone pulled the trigger and the gun failed to go boom. That is usually caused by a jam, and revolvers like the one used in this case don't jam.

I think it's just a reporter's semantic error trying to write about a subject they know nothing about.

I do know this wasn't an intentional killing. Although it was definitely preventable. My mind is a bit blown over the reporting. It's like the script has been rewritten to make it more palatable. Attempting to shift all responsibility away from Baldwin...ugh. He was the producer and also pulled the trigger. He will have to live with this and it will cost him dearly...emotionally and financially.

I am in the Netherlands, next door to Germany. The only island nations are Ireland & Iceland. The rest is on the mainland. The UK being in Europe is debatable..
I am sure the police force here is armed, only their guns are in their cases on their hips surrounded by a dozen other items they carry. So the gun isn't very noticeable.
I have never seen an officer pulling their gun or wearing it visible like a machine gun like they do in France.

I looked at how the French police were structured after the horrific events there and was surprised at the complexity.

I read yesterday that now they have also have regular French Army on the streets of Paris as needed. I havent been there for 15 years so no relevant personal experience.

Thanks for the response and I understand your point.

I have not read all the replies, but…

If someone, even a profesional, handed you a gun and said “this is an unloaded (cold) gun”, would you then point it at someone and pull the trigger?

I would not, but I am not an actor. If my JOB was to stand and point the gun at someone and pull the trigger in order to film a scene (either at the cameraman to get a front shot of the gun shooting directly at the camera or at another actor to get a shot of me shooting them) then yes I would! Now I have heard some talk that even on a set that for safety sake even in those cases they don’t have the actor aim directly at a person, they use camera angles to make it appear that way. That may be very true and it may be that on this particular set corners were being cut and safety procedures were not being followed. Still if I’m an actor and the prop guy tells me it’s cold and the director tells me to point and shoot I’m going to do it. Again this case may get trickier as Alec was not only an actor but also a producer and may be responsible for some of the root of the lack of safety…

I think it was part of the scene/script: Actor points gun at camera (audience) and fires. I don't think he was just firing it wildly for no reason.

If your job requires you to handle firearms, you should know how to do it safely.

No one should be immune from firearm safety, including actors, no one.

No exceptions, no excuses.
