The newly minted Princess of Wales has attendned her first state banquet in her new position and she looked smashing.

I know a big to do is made about her wearing the Queen Mary's Lover's Knot Tiara as it was a favorite of Diana's....or Diana wore it a lot anyway, being called a favorite is, I suppose, a debatable moniker.

I was sort of hoping she would trot out something new for this occasion. I don't wear much jewelry myself but I do get a kick out of seeing all the sparkly things the royal ladies wear and while I was hoping to see what new things Kate had access to in her new role I must say she does look very good in this one. I can't tell if it is the just the big hairdo Diana is sporting in the side by side photo here or what but it just seems to fit Kate so much better. I just like how Kate carries it more than Diana did.

Either way, the Princess certainly had a sartorial triumph at the banquet and I don't think Camilla looked bad either though I didn't get a good look at her tiara in this article. I'm not sure which one it is.

ETA: Good lord, all I had to do was scroll down further to get a better look at the Queen's tiara. I don't think I have seen this one before. Are those amethysts? I can't say it's my favorite in the Windsor vaults but I have seen others I like less. And it's not the honeycombed Greville tiara yet again.....though she does pull that off with aplomb.

I suppose I'm surprised at that choice in her first tiara appearance as Queen Consort. She (presumably, I guess I don't know for sure) has access to everything in the vaults now, I suppose I would have expected a grander choice but yay for something new!!!

::yes:: My yes...it looks MUCH better on both Elisabeth and Kate than Diana. Maybe it's the outfits? It's absolutely sublime with the embelishment on Kate's dress. And am I the only big, big Countess of Wessex fan here? :lovestruc She's always been dainty and understated and utterly appropriate.

Sadly, the King and Queen Consort, try as they might, just can't seem to transcend looking old and dowdy in ways that QEII and Philip never really did, even in their much-later years.

I was just thinking the same about Sophie. I really do like her. She is more understated than soem of the other royal ladies, meaning there is less tabloid fodder there. But I thought she looked gorgeous here.

I thought Queen Camilla looked ok here but it wasn't her best showing ever.

Kate's gown this evening struck me as a bit too "Dynasty" for my taste but she certainly looked gorgeous which I suppose trumps everything else. I honestly don't know if it is just her frame, height, hair, outfits, whatever but yes, I agree she looks much better in this tiara than Diana did.

In fairness, it really is an awful, awful dress Diana is wearing in the picture and the pearl choker is ugly too. Interestingly, Elizabeth, who was much smaller than either Diana or Kate, looks the most regal and "substantial" in it, IMO. :littleangel:

I wonder if it is the size of thier heads? Yes, Kate and Diana were much taller than Queen Elizabeth...at least in her later years, but I honestly couldn't tell you who had the larger head.

Maybe it is the hair do that really affects it. Kate has stunning tiara hair.

All I see in those photos is Camilla's crooked, discolored teeth. As Queen Consort, can't Camilla afford to get her teeth fixed? Maybe get dentures? I agree that they both look dowdy too.

Not a fan of Camilla either. If she wanted straight teeth she would have taken care of that years ago. I'd say that straight teeth are more of an American thing, but some celebrities in the U.S. could use orthodontia too. Not to mention any names, but Michael Strahan comes to mind.

I didn't like the choice of the pearl necklace Diana wore with the crown, too much with all the pearls. I think Diana's dress is just really outdated, I'm sure back in the 80's when we first saw her wear this, everyone thought it looked beautiful. Kate's dress looks very regal, she's worn a couple of dresses with this style. I also think Camilla went it little overboard with all the sapphires, she should have went with diamond earrings, no sapphire.

I think orthodontia is not very common in the UK. The UK doesn't even make the top 10 in dental hygiene in Europe.

My issue with these articles is that the tabloids always find: A sweet nod, pay tribute to, honour to...
Catherine, but also Meghan, couldn't wear anything without the tabloids finding something that is a tribute Diana. Whether it's actual jewellery or a colour or a certain fit. With the Lover's Knot tiara, it was the Queen Mum's, then Diana's, and it's now Catherine's for the last decade (ok, it's borrowed). To constantly reference that it was Diana's favourite, it's so click-baity.
And now that the queen has passed, she is added to the list.

In this article you have a list of all 40 tiara's the British royal family has.

Why they wear certain tiaras more than others, probably how it fits you, does it fit the occasion, is there any kind of troubled history to it (diamonds for example).
I believe it's on loan to one person during your lifetime as a royal, and you do not switch. For example, what Princess Anne has on loan cannot be worn by anyone else for as long as the Princess is alive.
I think they might think it too soon to re-distribute the former queen's tiaras.

I just think Diana is larger than life in all of their lives. Perhaps the focus on connection to her would not be as great if she hadn't died in her prime in such dramatic fashion.

I'm sure everyone will hate me saying this but I always wondered why Michelle Obama didn't get her teeth fixed. Maybe at some point you just say "what the heck, I'm not enduring that." I know there's tons of opinions on here but I think she has an attractive, pulled together appearance but her teeth have always been a distraction for me--not because they aren't "perfect" but they are just really, noticeably crooked and crowded.

Having just binge-watched the latest season of The Crown, and fully aware that there are historical inaccuracies and bias all up in there, I still have to say that I think Charles and Camilla have too much baggage for this role. Best to skip over them and go straight to the grandkids who are (comparatively) lower drama. It's just a figurehead position anyway, it seems to me that age is less of an asset to the role today than it was when Elizabeth took it on.
