last minute trip to the world. not one DVC room (studio or 1 br) was available for all 4 nights. Imagine my surprise when I got the Swan for all 4 nights using 4 FNC plus only 7000 points.

Air is high though. 1 non stop a day SW PHL-MCO and times stink, frontier from TTN high. probably do united down (use tb $ from plat) and jet blue back, using either my capital one points or chase UR EWR.

re the Swan, is it only MK that the bus doesn't go direct? so I'm good for springs and AK? I'll walk to HS and Epcot.

need to find out what kind of coffee maker room has and if there's a fridge.

may also look into point (mr, cap one and ur) transfers to JB

At AK, the drop off/pick up area is near the Uber area, rather than the Disney buses. So when exiting, go left instead of right. Can be sort of a mess at park close if there's a lot of people waiting because there is no queue (just a bus stop area) so it's every man for himself.

We are looking to go to Phang Nga Bay while we’re in Phuket also, so it’s great to know you guys enjoyed that. Surprisingly, DH tells me he’d rather do a 18.5hr straight shot flight, then split it up with layovers, so I’ll have to look more into transferring points to Singapore Airways and the points cost. Thanks so much for the info! At least I know there’s another option to add into the equation now 🙂
Just happened to see this hence why typing this 3 weeks after your post... But I generally feel that redeeming premium economy flights with Singapore airlines is not the best use of Krisflyer miles, unless you are redeeming in circumstances (e.g. peak times or last minute) when the cost of the flight is much higher than it would be normally.

For context, I live in Singapore, the main mileage programme I use is Singapore airlines Krisflyer, and I seem to have gone deep into the credit card points / Krisflyer miles / redemption rabbit hole... And am flying SIN-JFK-MCO-EWR-SIN later this year (on premium economy for the SIN-NYC-SIN legs) so had a look into redeeming vs buying the SIN-NYC-SIN flights when I was booking this trip.

To do the math using the Singapore/New York route and premium economy:

Redeeming flights:
80.5k miles each way + tax, or 161k miles return + tax (S$96.80 or US$71.90 for return)

Buying flights with cash:
Goes as low as S$1710 SIN-NYC-SIN return or US$1360 NYC-SIN-NYC return. This assumes it is off-peak though, someone I know says they paid more than twice this to travel fairly last minute in peak season last year.
The lowest category you can book is "premium economy lite", which earns 9.5k miles each way or 19k miles return (for Krisflyer - may credit differently for other airline programmes, but Singapore airlines is Star Alliance so should be able to get some credit for Star Alliance airlines like United, and Singapore airlines also partners with Jetblue and Alaska... I've done the reverse where I've earned Krisflyer miles from flying with United/Alaska in the past, and should be earning Krisflyer miles from flying with Jetblue on my upcoming trip).

Comparing the two, and if my math isn't wrong:
Buying the flights works out to S$1613 or US$1288 more in cash price than a redemption flight, while earning 19k miles
Since a redemption flight costs 161k miles but doesn't earn any miles, effectively you would be 180k miles worse off than if the flight was paid for in cash.

This means that 180k miles translates to S$1613 (0.9 Singapore cents/mile) or US$1288 of value, which is way below my personal valuation of a Krisflyer mile. I value my miles at approx 1.5-2 Singapore cents each, so 180k miles would be worth approx S$2700-3600 to me. And for further context I recently redeemed other flights (business) on Singapore airlines where I spent just over 100k miles (+tax) for flights that would have cost me around $3-4.5k with cash, or a value of approx 3-4.5 Singapore cents/mile...

This redemption might however make sense if it was for a peak period in time with flights going for much higher than S$1710/US$1360 return! And Singapore airlines runs "spontaneous escapes" offers that occasionally include the SIN-NYC flights where you can redeem flights for less than the usual redemption cost, which would improve the value cost for redeeming flights.

So it does depend on a lot of factors! But just typing all this out in case it is helpful... and I guess I just wanted to say it's definitely worth doing the math to see whether a redemption or just buying the ticket makes more sense for premium economy on this particular route.

You may already know this, but there is no bus from the front of Epcot for the Crescent Lake hotels. So you have to end your day at the International Gate or use a ride share from the front. I learned that the hard way last fall at midnight. Disney graciously put us on one of their buses.

I have 13 more pages to read but I thought I'd post this and get your input....

We have Ireland booked Mar 14-20 to try and celebrate my dd's 19th bday (on SPD). My dd and I have Biz class. All my mom was able to get was economy. I have a hotel on hold in Galway but that is it. I was dragging my feet on booking since my mom hadn't booked her ticket and you know booking a room for 3 vs 2 is harder and more expensive.

Last year the day before we were set to leave we found out my mom's cancer was back :( In the past year they have been checking it often, but it's now grown and she needs to start radiation in a few weeks. She said it'll only be 3 weeks and she'll be done before March. But I can't help but feel like this is just another sign to cancel again :(

We still need to book flights to PHL where we are flying out of (TBH, I'll likely try to non-rev if there are enough flights). I still need to book a rental car and the other hotels, etc. We're going to do SPD in Ireland, but now I wonder again if we're going to be able to pull this off.

My mom thinks she'll be okay, WWYD? She says she might be a little tired. I tried to tell her we'll be going at it kinda hard for the time we are there. She's wanted to do a summer trip instead (all along). But I do want to give my daughter her bday in Ireland too! UGH.

I'm sorry to hear about your Mom!

I know you were planning to cover a lot of ground on your trip. The driver will absorb most of that stress as it's a whole different experience. You'll need a willing navigator and that will be tiring too. If your mom is up for the trip and can be the person in the backseat enjoying the view, maybe it's possible? It's tough that she's the one in economy.

When we were traveling home from SNN, we met some Americans from Boston at the gate. We compared notes on where we'd been and we'd gone to most of the same places. When I asked how long they'd been there they said "4 nights". I laughed and said "we've been here 2 weeks". They'd had a great trip (this was 2 adult children and their Dad), the brother did all the driving. That would NOT have worked for us, but it's really up to the traveling group.

I looked up the sunrise/sunset for March and it's actually a longer daylight than I expected. About 12 hours of daylight. (My DS and his wife were just there this month at it got dark at 4:30pm.)

Good luck, hard decision!

Thanks so much for the info! We are meeting up with our friends to try and coordinate flights this weekend, so this will give me some talking points and things to mull over this week as we decide what route to go. :)

My Amex gold annual fee will hit next month. I was planning on cancelling bc I just never really use Amex and don’t find the fee worth it. Got retention last year.

Just logged on and there is an offer to upgrade to platinum for 100,000MR for $6000 spent over 6 months. Kind of tempted. Can definitely use the airline credit. Not sure about the hotel credit but hopefully.

Despite the higher AF, I find the Plat easier to justify. But I do use most of the credits, including the hotel one.

I'm in a similar boat with my biz Gold. It currently has an offer for another biz Gold, 70K MRs for $10K spend. 🤔

I would jump on that offer without hesitation. The MR alone would justify the annual fee, much less the card's benefits.

You could give it a try but I've tried before and just had water leaking everywhere.
Since I went downstairs for my coffee, I didn't use their pot. But if it's one of those filter pod one cup things which I think it is, I'm fairly sure it would just be a mess without a sealed filter pod.

I'm now down to just one night in early February as I'll be at BCV. Part of the reason is my BCV room will be set up with easier coffee! My relatives will be there (Swan) and it's just a short walk between the resorts. Maybe I'll have them over for morning coffee before I move over.

Question about using credit cards:

Are you guys comfortable using them when somebody comes to your house to do repairs?

For example, I have a plumber coming to do repairs. I'm always trying to get frequent flyer miles, so I typically put anything on a credit card if I can. But I'm leery about giving my credit card information to some random person who comes to my house. I mean, he won't exactly be random. I called the plumbing company and they're sending him. But I'm always concerned about identity theft, etc. So I typically pay these people with a check.

Am I being ridiculous?

That's a nice offer. Upgrading to the plat will count as "having had the card" for purposes of a future SUB. If you wanted to, you could apply for a plat and then quickly take the upgrade offer (in case it disappears). End up with 2 plats.

You might be able to pull up an offer for a new plat of 150k, $8000 spend.

Never had a problem. I've had some where you call in and give your card number for them to run later. Some run it there and some that write it down to run later.

Credit card has fraud protection and they should provide you with something that shows what they will charge or what they've charged. There's normally something to sign. I don't worry about it.

You are more at risk for using a check, where if fraud occurs once they get your routing and account numbers from the check, then they wipe out your bank account.

That's my experience too. Either they have a tablet of some sort where they swipe the card via their billing software or they send an invoice that I pay online or I call their business office to pay. Depends on the vendor, etc. I've never had an issue.

I'm more likely to use a credit card and always try to use one. Credit cards have fraud protection.

Haven't written a check in years.
