long pants for the 1/2? I'm undecided although the weather will be my deciding factor. I have a pair of loose fitting pants (they're like tights, only slightly looser. Usually when I run I wear "bike shorts" under these pants in cooler weather and it's very comfortable to run in. If it's cool in the morning, these pants would be perfect. Of course if its 70-80 degrees it may be a little uncomfortable.

What do you think?

If you're wearing bike shorts under the long pants, could you take off the long pants in the middle of the race if you were too hot? I guess that depends on how $$$ they are. If you're starting early, you may want something for the beginning. A lot of people where garbage bags or old sweats that they are willing to part with after they warm up. More likely you'll be more warm than cold once you get going.

Rule of thumb is don't do anything too different on race day then what you did while you trained (including food, clothes, stretches, hydration, etc).

I was wondering about that too. I have some crop pants that I love to walk in when its cooler. The problem in Fl is it can start out real cool & the warm up quickly! Will probably wait to see what the anticipated high is. So I would prepare for shorts or pants.

I would--I wore mine even though it was to get in the 70s/80s--though since I was out much much longer than expected....I did really feel it towards the end.

I wear whatever I wear on my long day.

For the half--it just won't get hot enough by 9:30am to justify wearing shorts. JMHO.

ETA: I hit goodwill last year for clothes and buy them as my toss away clothes. Though I've heard all the wonderful recommendations re: garbage bags and such--I just like to be cuddly when I am cold.

Oh, no! I was planning on my bike shorts and an oversized top. Maybe I will try that on a couple of my cooler Saturday morning outings and figure out if being cold impacts my performance. For some reason, I feel more like an athlete in bike shorts. Am afraid that if I dress in layers I won't be willing to take the time to take off the outer layer and that it will be hard to do that with a fanny pack, etc. :confused3 I'll have to go find someone's pictures of the 1/2 from last year and see how people were dressed. Will also watch weather.com very closely the days before we leave for Orlando to see what the hourly temps are in the mornings.

Keep in mind that LIsa's used to alittle warmer weather than us. We'll be lucky to be training in 30 and 40 degree weatehr , unless you're inside. I'll have something to throw away at teh start, but unless it's unseasonable cold, I'm guessing we won't need long pant. I'mm thinking 50 or 55 and up will feel very warm to me.

Carrie -- I hadn't considered that. Good point. WHEW!! I feel better. Will play it by ear. :teeth:

WELLLLLLL! :rotfl2:

Just to put it in perspective--we have had plenty of "yankees" ;) ;) Freeze their tookuses off b/c it was soooo bitterly cold during some of the marathons (like 20s!).

AS far as layering....I put my # on what will be the uppermost layer once all the cuddly clothes come on. My fanny pack was tucked underneath the outer layer for easy removal.

And to add some humor--though I will defend it as I am not hte only person to experience this and have heard of those from colder areas who are used to the cold do exactly the same thing.....

I do wear earmuffs when it is 70 or below. :teeth:

(not b/c my ears are cold--but the slight chill in the air is enough to cause a very excruiating and piercing pain in my ear).

As for last year--even the Floridians had it tough b/c it was soooo hot! And right now--we think the temps we're running in are downright wonderful. But in January--the same temps (slightly cooler actually)--were downright miserable. It just wasn't what we trained for--though we did fare better being from here.

It is best to prep for a warm day and for a cold day. Run your 20 miler or 10 miler in what you anticipate to be wearing--and be prepared to modify it if necessary.

Had I known it was going to be so hot--I would have run in shorts last year. Usually by then there is enough chill in the air for me to wear pants--but on that day...NOTHING! No chill, no coolness, nothing!

Oh--and it can rain, too! ;)

You'll find we were dressed for a VERY warm balmy day.

Temps can vary from teens at the start up to 70 degrees.

Race time high temps can be from 40 to 80 degrees. :guilty:

I should probably admit that I was thinking of CHimera who wears a sweatshirt at 70 degrees, IIRC. ;) To put things in perspective, it's been in the upper 40s low 50s and I've been doing long tights/sausage pants.

Last spring, though, I was doing shorts at 45, because it felt so warnm to me. Come marathon time, I will be somewhere in between.

I've read that it can range from 20 to 80 for marathon. Yes, at 20 I will be bundled, although that's likely what I will be training in. At 80, I will die. It is good to be prepared for both extremes, but I still think us northerners who have trained in the cold will need a little less bundling than those in FL.

Lisa does make a very good point, though. We tend to think FL will always be warm. While it is most of the time, we can't assume it will be 60 and beautiful the day of the race. (On the bright side, it shouldn't be below zero or anything.) How many suitcases can we bring on the plane???? ;)

It was 52 this morning in NC, that was a perfect temperature for me. I did a nice 8 miler today for my long run because DD and DS are off school tomorrow for Veteran's Day.

What would be your perfect running temperature?

OMG, Lisa, you sound just like my DH! Only he's likely to have his longjohns on, too! And he's from the north! NY/CT to be exact. I wonder how he survived the first 58 years of his life before we moved down here! :cold:

Seriously, there can be a huge variation in temps down here that time of year. You can be really cold one day and quite warm the next. I would suggest planning 2 outfits to bring - one for a warmer day and one for a cooler day that you can adjust as necessary. Maybe something you can layer and remove if necessary. Then check the local weather for race day and adjust accordingly.

For me personally, I tend to dress light while exercising outdoors all year around here. Maybe it's my northern background, but I think my hot flashes may have a lot to do with that, too! :rotfl2:

Long pants?? Most definitely. I'm trying to figure out exactly how many layers I'll need for 3:00am in January. I ordered my WISH shirt a little big so I could wear a long sleeve shirt under it ;)
I think I'll be okay during the race, but sitting outside in the dark and cold is NOT my first choice. I've already purchased my Nike ear warmer headband thingie and gloves, though I may double-glove if it's cold enough. I have throwaway sweats and am planning to be packin some very attractive yet functional trash bags. Makeup at this point is not a concern :rotfl:

I think Nancy and Lisa both said it...the one thing we can tell you about FL winter is that it's unpredictable. I did my undergrad in Orlando and remember one winter with days in the 20s. Personally I'm hoping our half will have similar weather to last year's, but I imagine I'm in the minority.

Yes, I would die.

I want btwn 50 and 60, but warm up to 75 to 80 when I'm done. I don't ask for much, though. ;)

I wore my longer ones two years ago-and a jacket and gloves teh whole way round. Am packing both this year, but will probably run in my shorts anyway, as I've not tested longer leggings on a very long run. I find so long as my hands are warm, it doesn't really matter what else I'm wearing anyway - I've run in a sleeveless top and gloves before now!!. I will however be picking up one of the paper jackets at the expo if it's cold this year, they were just really easy to take on and off. Helen

I will be wearing lightweight jogging pants (water absorbant fabric). I find that the most important part of keeping warm for me...is trying to keep dry around my joints.

-strange, but true.

I think I'll wear light weight pants..I'm not sure. We've had 9 feet of snow since mid Nov. and it's been incredibly cold here, so Florida weather may feel like summer to me. lol :sunny:
