Archbishop Slams Disney

This is crazy. Make sure you read this article. Disney does not corrupt children. Children need something like to Disney to look forward to in their lives. Their is so much mess out in this world and Disney helps us to get away from things like this. Disney is a safe place for children and a place where even grown adults can come feel like children again. This article made me mad.

LONDON, July 23 (Reuters) - The likely future spiritual head of the Church of England launched a blistering attack against the consumer society on Tuesday, saying it corrupted the young and made them prematurely sexually aware.

Entertainment giant Walt Disney Co (DIS), child talent shows and computer games came under particularly heavy fire from Rowan Williams, the current Archbishop of Wales and favourite to be named on Tuesday the 104th Archbishop of Canterbury and leader of the world's 70 million Anglicans.

A government source said this week news on the appointment of the new Archbishop -- the subject of intense religious debate and media speculation in the last few months -- would come before Parliament breaks for summer recess on Wednesday.

In a book serialised in the London Times newspaper this week, Williams hit out at children's talent shows and electronic games, which he says typify modern society's unashamed perception of the young as merely another type of consumer.

"Anything but innocuous is the conscription of children into fetishistic hysteria of style wars," Williams wrote.

"It is still mercifully rare to murder for a pair of trainers, or to commit suicide because of an inability to keep up with peer group fashion; but what can we say about a marketing culture that so openly feeds and colludes with obsession?"

"The Disney empire has developed this to an unprecedented degree of professionalism," he said.

He also argues that the growing trend towards talent and beauty shows for youngsters puts pressure on children to become sexual objects at too early an age.

Born in Wales in 1950, Williams became Oxford University's youngest theology professor at 36, was enthroned as Bishop of Monmouth in 1992 and elected Archbishop of Wales in 2000.

A talented linguist, he would become the first Archbishop of Canterbury from outside England since the church's 16th century breakaway from Rome.

Liberals in the church have backed Williams, a well-known fan of U.S. cartoon satire 'The Simpsons', while traditionalists have railed against his tolerance of homosexual clergy.

Besides his attack on consumer society, Williams is likely to create further waves with his support of women bishops, his open criticism of the Afghanistan conflict and his dismissal of any plans for a U.S. invasion of Iraq as immoral.

I dunno, I can sort of see his point... After all, how many plush toys do kids really need? As I read it, Williams' point is that Disney (among others) is treating children not as an audience, but as a demographic to sell to. His objection (as with many on this board) is that children don't need to be bombarded with ads for the latest DVD, Plush Toy, or computer game.

That's the way I read it, too.

I would disagree with the Archbishop in that he appears to object only to treating children in this way. I personally think it's always wrong-headed to view your audience as nothing more than walking wallets, no matter their age.

I think these "spirtual leaders" need to take a good long look in their own backyard before attacking other things in society as being corruptive to children.

It is a given today that almost all of society is looked upon as an "open wallet". I don't think just Disney treats people this way. Look at the price of going to a pro sporting event, the movies, an amusement park and the list goes on.

I agree, he has legit logic, and some things he says make sense, but I don't think he can point fingers until the church cleans up its act too. JMHO

Who really cares about what this guy says. Is he saying Disney is corrptive going to send sales and theme park attendance plummeting? NOPE! Does anyone care what this guy says? NOPE!

Typical socialist type thinking from socialist country. On matt drudge's site they had a different article where the bishop sang from his same out dated socialist hymnal.

One reason I love Disney is the cast of characters out there that hate Disney. With those enemies, they have to be doing something right.

The dude's got somewhat of a point. Just look at this deal Disney's doing with Motorola marketing phones to 6 to 12 year olds, with plans for more consumer electronics targeted to that set. Can't kids just be kids?

So, why just Disney?

What about Nick, huge kid/teen audience that watches these people halk products. Just because Disney is the helm of Kid entertainment dosn't mean they actually do this. Just because one kid sees another with something different they like, dosn't mean the company that sold it is criminaly responsable for the suicide of the kid who wants it.

Plus, if people thought as Disney as selling to kids for profit and didn't like it, wouldn't all the Disney stores close down? It's our culture. We give kids mone to allocate to anything they damn well feel like buying that, of course is leagal, for them to buy. They work for it. They clean the gradge, mow the yard. And it's open to everyone. Were not talking about a $500 dollar Buzz Lightyear doll. One that, if they save there money, can buy.

My final point is that Disney isn't the only ones who does this. Sure, a Movie Mcdonald's promotion, a Movie soundtrack, but 90% is promotions for people already going to McDonalds or otherwise.

Oh my gosh!!!!! How could any corportation stoop so low as to make money off children!!!!!
Certainly the dastardly Disney Co must cease this practice now!!!! Toys should be given away to all children so that there is equality among all!!!!
WDW should waive all admission costs to anyone under 18!!!!

All movies should have at least an "R" rating so that children will not be tempted to watch the likes of Cinderella or Lady and the Tramp (the title of THAT movie says it all).

Oh... and to the good man maybe someone should say "eat my shorts".

Sheesh! :(

Socialist. Really? Must get out all my old political science books, because I was under the obviously mistaken belief that we in the UK, like our friends in the US, lived in a moderated form of capitalism. Thanks for putting me right Bob, so glad to have a voice of reason on the board.

Regards
