I don’t think anybody would disagree that AA miles for flight provides the best return. It’s probably important to point out to some of the newer folks and lurkers on the thread that many people are chasing AA Miles despite the fact that they knew they were NOT going to use them for flights.
I’ve personally earned a lot of AA miles in the past 10 months with absolutely no intention on setting foot inside an American plane. It was a differentiation strategy. A way to hit a different issuer, help with my pacing; etc.
You can do this with lots of points systems though.
A thought for people to ponder: have you considered all the different angles for a points system (especially one you’ve dismissed as “not for you”)??
- SW points can be redeemed for Amazon and Target gift cards at 1cpp.
- AMEX MRs can be redeemed for Home Depot and Bed Bath and Beyond at 1cpp.
- URs can be cashed out at 1cpp
- Marriott points can be transferred to airlines at various valuations
- And of course AA miles can be used for hotels including Disney and Universal at 0.85 - 1.00 cpp
While none of those are the optimal value play, depending on your recent cards, strategy, and points balances; they may end up being the best play at that time. Always Be open to alternate redemption strategies!
