I love credit cards so much! v4.0 - 2021 (see first page for add'l details)

Back with another question (on a really quiet day here, I guess). DH has an Amex Hilton Honors Biz card. He also has an Aspire. From what I can tell, the Biz card isn't really giving him anything of value. Is there a reason to keep it? Is there something to PC it to? Or do we just cancel the card? I'm always nervous of upsetting the "jealous misstress" Amex, as @Lain called them.

I'd look at how many cards he has, how many cards he's cancelled this year, when his AF hits, and how much across all of his Amex cards, he has spent or is on target to spend with Amex (I have a suspicion-nothing based in fact-that this plays into Amex's pop up rubrics).

Sadly, there isn't currently a no AF Hilton Biz card, so it's a fish or cut bait situation.

So if he's maxed out at 5 credit cards and conceivably might want another card (especially if you as P1 have any robust support links), I'd consider dropping it.

If his AF hits in December, I'd max out the wireless credits and perhaps put an extra charge or two on it and then cancel it, if you can't justify the $95 (which is a challenge if he's holding an Aspire).

If, OTOH, he's been cancelling cards right and left, I might consider paying the AF and holding it for another year since $95 is a small fee to pay to keep Amex happy.

Since we don't have insight into what triggers the pop up, I'm sure most of us are extra cautious with Amex but in the end, if you can't justify keeping the card, don't. Amex likely won't hold cancelling a $95 card while you're paying a $450 AF against you!

I don't think he has cancelled any AMEX cards at this point, so maybe they won't hate him for cancelling this one? If I'm counting correctly he has 4 credit cards at the moment. The Brilliant is going to have to go as well. It's just not a good deal for us (but I believe he can PC that one down when the time comes?) Thanks so much for your advice. :)

I PC'd the Brilliant to the regular Bonvoy once my second AF hit-lots of people were getting upgrade offers but so far, almost 2 years later, none for me, lol. It's the most likely to be cancelled on my list since it's ugly, which I feel is a reasonable justification :rotfl:

LOL :rotfl: Seriously, they should make those expensive cards prettier. DH says he can't really tell the difference between the Aspire and the Biz. We kept that card because we had plans to use the nights in Copenhagen, but since that trip was cancelled and we haven't rebooked anything it's just sitting there costing us too much money. Luckily we got the $300 out of it one night on the coast here. The Aspire gives us status, breakfast, and discounts that the Brilliant doesn't so it just feels like a bad card for us. It could also be that there aren't a lot of Marriotts I hope to stay at in the future. I'm staying at Hyatt and Hilton in Hawaii.

A quick reminder for Amex Plat holders that a bunch of offers expire on 6/30.
Home Depot - $50 off $50 online only - 2x
Best Buy - $50 off $50 online only - 2x
Saks - $50 credit
Goldbelly - $50 off $100 - 3x
Container Store - $50 off $150 - 2x

Spend the morning running around to these places - 2.5 years of Amex Plat and still don't feel I have enough to buy anything at Saks :D . Container Stores is very expensive and they had so much out of stock. Will probably never buy there again. Home Depot outfitted my son's bathroom towel fixtures and still trying to figure out a $50 for Best Buy. I got a food processor for the first $50.

Most CD's are set up to be funded once, at the time of opening. I suppose you could open a CD every month but that seems inefficient. And they tie up your money for the lifetime of the CD, although you can pay a penalty to take money out (so if interest rates end up going up and you want to move money around, you will most likely pay a penalty, except for some no-penalty CDs). And they are not much better rates relative to savings accounts (e.g., at Ally a savings account earns 0.5% and a 3 yr CD earns 0.65%) so I'd lean toward a savings account since it has a lot more flexibility.

I've liked Ally for their products FWIW. When a CD matures with them, you have a few days to move the money into a savings account and if you don't, it will automatically get put into another CD of the same duration.

I don't know what amounts you're talking about but I've heard there is a gift tax for amounts >$15K annually, so if you're looking at more than that by the end of three years, you should find out about the details on it, and consider if you should give money annually vs in a lump sum.

If your son earns money, also consider starting a Roth IRA for him up to the amount he earns (subject to the $6000 annual cap), and getting his financial future started on a good foot. That's what I've done with my teen. I'm just dollar cost averaging into index funds and it's gone up 15% already; that's way higher than any savings account.
I second Ally. I like their "buckets" feature that allows you to organize your savings however you like. They also offer a no penalty CD, but it looks like the rate is the same as the savings right now. If CD rates increase, you could periodically open a CD with some of the savings.
thank you for the advice and information. Now that I understand better how a CD works, I'm going to go for a simple savings account. I hadn't thought about the gift tax limits so will keep that in mind as well. Thanks again.

GC works for Best Buy. I did Disney and Uber Eats (was on sale). If your food processor is over $100, both will credit.

Thanks for posting this reminder. Can someone also remind me--are the Home Depot and Best Buy offers targeted (like Goldbelly) or generally available (like Saks)?

For those of you that buy GC at Staples, what amount do you usually buy each trip? I am between MSRs and decided to buy some GC today to cover our spend and the manager was super weird about it. I’m not sure if it was the amount I bought ($600) or because the cashier didn’t call her for approval since the GC purchase was over $50. Just wondering if I should scale back next time.

if your within the limits, there no need to worry about the amount. Now if you are doing over their limit, then yeah, scale back.

Trip report: Los Cabos, Mexico

Thought I’d share a travel hacking/points based trip report for Mexico.

Travel party of 8: Myself and husband, 43, our younger kids, 7 and 11, known as “the lils” and our older kids, 23 and 20 and their long-time boyfriend/girlfriends.

No pre-departure COVID testing is required for Mexico. We are all vaccinated, except 7 and 11 YOs. For my peace of mind, I administered BinaxNOW at home COVID tests (Sam’s Club curbside pickup 2/$19.88) on the kids the day before departure. This helped me feel more secure that it would be unlikely that they would test positive while in Mexico and that we would have to quarantine there.

I always buy trip medical insurance through insuremytrip and did this for our travel party of 8 ($117 total). $250,000 primary medical insurance pp and $1M med evac, + more coverage. My husband and niece were once hospitalized in Mexico and during our hospital stay we met many American and Canadian families without insurance coverage who were facing bills in the tens of thousands of dollars. Over the years, I’ve filed 3 claims with various travel insurance companies and it is ALWAYS a hassle, but I’ve always been glad to have the coverage.

So this trip was a backup trip in case our Cayman Island trip got cancelled (maybe the fourth time will be the charm?). I booked flights on Southwest using points/companion pass and used the SW open window and their re-accomodation practices to get these flights for $482 (though we used points). Cash cost would have been $482 for flights that were actually costing $1100 (I would never have paid $1100).

We had one connection in Denver and had our very FIRST EVER lounge experience at the Centurion Lounge. Both husband and I used our Amex plats and brought in 2 guests each. My son and his gf had something come up and shifted their flights to the next day. My son shares the same name as hubby, so they also enjoyed the Centurion lounge the next day (We have multiple Amex plats so that’s how I’ll morally justify this gray area). We got there right at 7am opening time and there was a line, but it moved quickly and there was no wait to enter. We really, really didn’t know what we were missing with the lounge experience until now. As this lounge overlooks the airport, my daughter joked, “Look at those suckas down there crowded into regular airport seats.” Seriously, the peace we enjoyed really made travel day a lot better. I’ve never gotten through the airport without spending big dollars- it was so nice to have our only cost be the gratuity we left.

Transportation. We used insideloscabos for roundtrip private airport transportation for $140. Everywhere else we used Uber. Because of the seating limitations with COVID, that meant 3 ubers when we all went to the same place, but it was actually really great. Several times, part of our group would go early and part would stay later, so the multiple Ubers were really an advantage. And uber cheap (pun intended). I would estimate our Uber costs for 5 days at about $300, and a car rental for our size party would have been $1100, so the cost savings and lack of rental car/parking hassle was really worth it. I also bought Uber gcs in advance and earned points and rewards. Resorts in Cabo don’t allow Uber to pickup inside the gates (though drop-off is allowed), but it was a very short walk within the resort to get just out of the gated area- it was easy peasy. Total transportation cost= $440

Accommodations.
We stayed at Hilton Los Cabos Beach and Golf resort in the corridor, about equal distance between Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo (15 mins to either city). We had two standard oceanview rooms and booked one on points and one on cash. Using Hilton’s 5th points night free, one room cost 280k points. Points were earned either through SUBS or transfer from MR during a 40% transfer bonus. The second room we paid with cash because by playing with our dates a bit, we were able to score the room for $1727 ($345/nt including taxes and fees). We put the four young adults in the points room so we wouldn’t have to pay any additional extra adult charges. As reported on flyertalk, this Hilton is rather stingy with the upgrades. But one room had a great pool and oceanview, while another room had an okay oceanview and a view of a water runoff ditch.

This was our first hotel stay with the gf/bf and I wasn’t sure how the one hotel room for the four of them would work out. Since we are paying for the resort stay, I figure you might as well maximize the room. I think it worked out as best as it could- one couple would be at the pool while the other couple might be in the room or out and about. But, I do think bringing the gf/bf reduced the time my son and daughter spent together, but they spent lots of time with the lils. On the flip side, it’s really special to see our big family grow and take these adventures together.

We really like the Hilton. It had multiple infinity pools and always great pool chair availability. The pool never felt crowded and poolside service was always good. The resort is located on one of the very few swimmable beaches in Cabo, but it was red flags every day, so we never swam in the ocean. The resort size was perfect- not too large and very easy to get around. Multiple dining options ranging from poolside, poolside restaurant, Italian and authentic Mexican.

For six days, our food and beverage spend was $1163. We have Hilton Diamond status through the Hilton Aspire card and that gave us two continental breakfasts per room. You can upgrade to their full hot breakfast buffet for $11. The servers never charged us for the kids- which was very kind. EVERYTHING at the buffet was served to you- which might slow things down a bit, but in my opinion, that’s how every buffet should operate for sanitary reasons, forever (remember that Mexican hospitalization experience I mentioned earlier?). We’d typically have a light lunch poolside and then dinner off the resort.

So, this trip was all about relaxation and great food. We specifically didn’t plan any excursions and just enjoyed our time at the pool and beach and then had absolutely fabulous dining experiences. This is only our third time to Cabo, as we typically visit Tulum/Riviera Maya/Cancun annually. We love Cabo’s desert meets the sea beauty, but have been really awed by the amazing dining experiences.

Dining experiences.

We made reservations in advance, almost all through opentable. In Cabo, everyone we encountered wore at least one, often two masks, diligently. We didn’t observe any spacing restrictions at tables.

Flora Farm’s, outside San Jose del Cabo -Father’s Day Brunch. We spent three hours here at this farm to table restaurant. Flora Farm is a lush farm oasis in the middle of the desert. While you dine, the kids play within sight in their grassy areas, playing bag toss and yard Jenga. Live music plays while fans blow and misters cool you. Farm dogs sit at your feet while you enjoy their hand-crafted cocktails and brunch served family style. As you wander the grounds, you’ll find mango and lime trees, and rows and rows of fresh crops growing. Drying herbs hang nearby and fresh herbs and produce are available for purchase. Meander into their retail boutiques or feed the ducks and turtles at the pond. Total= $359

Hacienda Cocina y Cantina, Cabo San Lucas. This is one of our favorite repeat restaurants in Cabo, with views of Land’s End (the tip of the Baja). We enjoyed live musicians singing contemporary hits. Service is exceptional and the food is outstanding. If you go, you must try a Molcajete for two. Their fresh fish is perfectly seared, especially the seabass and salmon. For dessert, enjoy the most delicious churros served with caramel and chocolate sauces, or the artisan ice cream. Total= $363

Los Tres Gallos (The Three Roosters), San Jose del Cabo. Located in the gallery district, surrounded by boutiques, art galleries, paleta (fresh frozen fruit “popsicles”) and souvenir shops, this was our first time dining at Los Tres Gallos. We were seated in their courtyard, with traditional brightly colored paper decorations hanging overhead (papel picado). Local musicians played in the courtyard and tableside. Authentic upscale Mexican cuisine is served. We enjoyed cocktails and appetizers of flaky chips, spicy salsas and guacamole. Dinner selections ranged from fresh fish, to steak filets to traditional Mexican fare. We skipped dessert. Our group rated this as their number one food choice. Total= $272

El Farallon, Waldof Astoria, Pedregal, Cabo San Lucas- Farewell Dinner. This resort is carved into the cliffside at the tip of the Baja, where the Pacific Ocean meets the Sea of Cortez. Your journey begins as you are driven through a 1,000 footlong tunnel carved straight through the mountainside. You’re then escorted through the stunning Waldorf Astoria grounds to your cliffside dining location. Waves crash below as you watch fish jump and in the winter, whales breach. El Farallon serves a four course meal and the service is impeccable. For our party of 8, no less than 3 servers would bring and clear each course, simultaneously. This is a signature, memorable experience. This is the kind of experience often reserved for a romantic dinner or proposal, but like us, we saw many large families, or milestone birthday celebrations. As you would expect, it gets gusty and waves crash and spray. Your hosts at El Farallon will bring you a Mexican poncho to warm you, as you enjoy the experience. The menu changes daily and consists mainly of fresh seafood. Total= $667.

Departure. US requires a negative covid test for re-entry. We opted to do this two days prior to departure right at the Hilton resort. Our party of 8 took about 20 total minutes to test and result. The tests were lined up and numbered, and our group just took turns getting swabbed. No record of the order we were swabbed in occurred. While I am skeptical of this process, it met the criteria for US re-entry. Total= $240 ($30/pp).

We enjoyed the VIP Lounge in Terminal 2 as we departed SJD utilizing Priority Pass through Amex Plat. Again, very relaxing and decent food and beverage options, served individually. Service was on the slow side, but we had plenty of time. The airport was chaotic and the airport food lines were insane, so we were glad to have this option.

There were many departure delays on our way home, as well as an accidental apple incident at customs (sadly, not our first), which made for a long day.

We had a very, very relaxing, do-nothing trip, which is very unusual for us. The young adults did some ATVing and water excursions, but we were happy to just enjoy relaxation and our dining experiences. All in, our cash cost was about $5600 for our party of 8, which was applied either to Hilton Biz or CSP MSRs.

I typically buy the limit and never had any issues. I’ll even bring P2 and she will also purchase the limit. I have bought anywhere between 3k-5k of GCs and never have had anyone give me an issue. I wouldn’t worry about it

Hey hey DISchurner peeps!

Popping in to report on another timeshare presentation offer completed. This one was booked pre Covid and I was targeted due to the IHG credit card I believe. Anyhow it was $299 for 3 nights in Orlando. A few months ago I got a call from them with an offer to refund the full $299 if I booked our stay and tour for June. So we booked for this weekend. They put us at the Crowne Plaza and the room wasn’t bad except for a maintenance issue that was fixed right away.

The presentation was for 2 hours. I kinda felt sorry for the sales person. I guess their spiel is how much one spends on hotels and I’m like well very little if anything because travel hacking. He asked how often we come to Orlando and I said a few times a month but we have DVC. He asked how many points we had and was stunned when I told him. He was trying to explain how their timeshare works and didn’t know if banking and borrowing were final transactions and had to ask someone. You can put points back for a $35 fee after banking and borrowing.

So he asks about our other types of vacations which are DCL and ABD. So then he tells me I can get 30% off Carnival cruises because they are business partners and I said there wasn’t enough money to pay me to set foot on a Carnival ship.

So his next selling point was using the Timeshare points to book IHG hotels. Now, they have pictures of the Intercontinental Dubai and Intercontinental Thalasso and Le Moana etc. on the walls. He tells us that the average owner has 200k points and that they convert 5:4 for IHG hotels as if this is a good thing. I started laughing uncontrollably. I went on to explain to this man that for $40,000 and whatever the maintenance dues are and a $299 fee, he is telling me that I cannot even get one night at the Willard in DC during cherry blossom season with these Holiday Inn vacation club Timeshare points. Meanwhile, I can book the hotel direct for under $300 a night. Then, he goes on to switch gears and says that the points aren’t good for hotel stays. As if I didn’t just hear him use that as a selling point. Uhm ok.

So then he hands us this RCI catalog which is his next selling point and says, I want you to browse through there and choose 3 places you’d love to visit and walks away to give us time. I happened to see Aulani listed. So when he came back I said, you are telling me that I can book Aulani with these points through RCI plus the $299 with no problem and he says yes unless I’m looking at Christmas week or something which can be challenging. So I said ok show me. I asked him to look for any week in March in a 2 bedroom ocean view at Aulani. Of course he couldn’t find it. So I asked if he could find availability for any other week and then he said the system wasn’t working right now. Sure Jan. He asked what would prevent me from buying and I said the lack of flexibility or ability to stay anywhere with their program except for places I have no desire to visit.

Another one bites the dust. I got my $299 back in cash and headed to the parks.
I feel sorry for the sales person, too! Thanks for sharing, this was so amusing. Though surely some people bite and get this sad 40K timeshare and then find they can't stay anywhere desirable... I feel sorry for them, too!

Ya'll, DH was instantly denied for the CSP.

We downgraded his CSR to Freedom on 6/4... I was really hoping he wouldn't have to call recon at all, he's a team player so he'll call but was really hoping to MDD.
Oh no! Did you call today? I think they're there Sunday morning, no? Would still be able to MDD tomorrow. But if not, hopefully he can get that sweet CSP SUB at least!

Not sure if Amex is still doing this but DH and I both got an “appreciation credit” of $50 the month the AF was billed without us even requesting it. I had been planning to cancel the card but then this credit came through so I didn’t. I was credited about 2 weeks after the AF posted. So that basically brought the AF down to $45 and with the wireless credits we’re on the plus side. Maybe someone else can report back if they got the same credit and how recently. Below is a pic of how it showed up, with the AF of $95 being on the last day of the previous statement.

MDD is based off the approval of your first card, not when you apply. Recon also isn't open on the weekends which is why r/churning will always tell people to start on mon/tues not fri in case you need to help the 2nd or both cards along.

I'm curious- how do you go about using some of total household income for his app?
Honestly, I don't even know who checks what your income is anyway... just put something down.
At least with spouses, it's okay to add their income as your income too from everything I've read. In this case we took it a little further and added my mom's income to my brother's. During the recon call they asked about the income only to confirm it but didn't question it.

Ah, yes, approval is what matters, sorry.

I know everyone says it's better to do it earlier in the week, and it's what I did with mine, but when we had to call recon yesterday (Saturday) for my brother's CSR they were open. We did ask the agent their hours at the end of the call because I was curious and were told Sat 8-1, Sun 9-9 EST. I wondered if it's been like that for a while or if they have more hours now given their new, widely advertised CSP offering.
