Manatee in Shelter Cove near DVC Resort

For those at or coming to Hilton Head in the next several weeks, be sure to look for manatee in the harbor around the DVC resort.

From around late May through the end of September there are sightings of manatee that have migrated north for the summer and Shelter Cove Harbour is one of their frequent hangouts.

There have been sightings in the harbour for 2-3 weeks now. We have been able to see them in the early evenings near the dock where the Holiday (Dolphin watch ship) and Capt. Hook (fishing charter) are docked - directly across the harbour from buildings 19, 21, 2, and 28.

They are large, very docile animals. There is an ice maker on that dock with a water overflow which is a treat for these animals. Please don't make any attempt to water or feed them though, as there is a federal prohibition against such contact with a hefty $100,000 fine. Here are photos of one from summer 2013 from the same dock (click on an image for a larger view).
