I live in Los Angeles. I spend $40 for two adults to go to the movie theater - more if it's one of the nicer theaters or a popular showtime. So, if you're from a HCOL area like me, this is not a bad deal. Also, if you live in the LA-area, the drive-in theater Mission Tiki will be playing Mulan, and they charge $10/adult and $1 per kid ages 5-9, so this will give you more of the big screen theater experience, and it could be less expensive depending on the size of your family. But, you have to stay in your car to watch the film, so don't pack too many people into one vehicle because the view won't be that great for the people in the back.
Now, to the people who say, "What is Disney thinking?!" Good question. Disney is taking a huge hit. Mulan was produced to be released in theaters. They won't be making the same money from pay-per-view as they would from the Box Office. It must be very disappointing to the studio to release the movie like this, but I guess it's time to be experimental.
