News Round Up 2021

I guess January is a good time for it to be down for unexpected reasons (compared to say November/December). Hopefully not down too long -- DHS can't afford many attractions to be down due to that park's popularity . I am guessing with park hopping it will be even more popular (start there in the morning and hop somewhere else after getting on Rise or something) . or hop over there for all the popular rides after spending the morning in the other parks.

I wonder if there was an issue with the ride that wasn't observed when they were running it at half-capacity. Seems strange that maybe about a week or so running at full capacity it would be shut down.

Trying to put myself in their shoes and guess what they are thinking:

Money aspect:
- They need to get back to a point of making money from the parks before they invest more $ into them
- Given this, there will be no new major capital expenditures for quite some time
- What is already in progress will get done, but they will want to spread out the opening of those things as much as they can - so delaying opening of things in progress
- If they are going to delay opening, then they will want to spread out the construction across as many fiscal quarters as they can so they can split up the cost

Attracting crowds:
- Still in reduced capacity now, probably at least for 1/2 (?) of 2021 - parks are largely filling OK (resorts/hotels, a different story), do don't need anything new/big right now, won't be able to increase attendance that much
- When parks can open fully, do they need a big new draw?:
a) already have pend up demand so people that have been holding off for whatever reason will come just to come
b) by that point parks are into Halloween and then Holidays which is a draw, and then the 50th anniversary that people will come for anyway
c) people that skipped 2020 likely have some new stuff to see anyway - many haven't seen MMRR and many haven't gotten on Rise. So there is already "new" stuff for them

Spreading crowds to parks:
- when crowds do come back, which will need the most help attracting people?
a) MK is MK and especially with the 50th stuff people will come
b) DHS has Galaxy's Edge and MMRR, the two newest big things already
c) AK has the next newest big thing in Pandora and just night time stuff was relatively new anyway. Plus nothing really had started work there, not about to break ground
d) EPCOT - this is where help is most needed and some work is already being done
- So you have Rat ready to go, plus the new entrance and whatever work is going to be done on the middle part of Future World (sorry, World Celebration), and at some point Harmonius. And Space 220 appears near ready to go, another draw

Anniversaries:
- obviously have WDW's 50th in 2021, then EPCOT's 40th in 2022, and the TWDC's 100th in 2023
- BUT, all of those dates are in October and rather than celebrate that date, celebrate the year, meaning, we celebrate WDW's 50th from Oct 1st 2021 to Sept 30th 2022 - not everything needs to be ready by day 1

So potential timeline:
- 2021: Get things "back to normal", see what that looks like, open Rat and Space 220 at some point in 1H, get Harmonius up in 2H, get the Star Wars Hotel open to bring in more $. Overall, plenty of "new" stuff for people that skipped 2020
- 2022: Tron is the big thing, as part of the WDW's 50th year long celebration, opens in 1H 2022
- 2023: Guardians is the big thing, as part of EPCOT's 40th year long celebration, opens in 1H 2023
- 2024: Splash Re-theme - big "statement" work for TWDC to make, fits part of it's 100th year long celebration
- 2025: SSE redo - next thing that needs done, not as major as brand new ride/land but pretty significant
- 2026: Something in Animal Kingdom?

Keep in mind this isn't what I *want* but how I could see it going and how they are thinking. I mean, best case scenario for something new "big" beyond what is already started is either the Splash retheme or the SSE redo ... and that is 2024/2025 at the earliest - so they need to spread out the existing new things between then and now

(OK, that got longer than I thought it would be)
I actually agree with majority of this and actually don't mind it at all to be honest due to the situation were being dealt. I did hear a rumor (take with a grain of salt) that they are gonna push the splash major refurb to this year and that's another reason why they are putting Tron on the backburner. Supposedly Splash is a huge focus and wants to be fast tracked. But once again this is just a rumor from a Disney vlogger that is for the most the part pretty knowledgeable

Looks like new Memory Maker offer - get unlimited pictures and video from now until June 18th (vs just a 30 day window):

https://www.laughingplace.com/w/news/2021/01/04/disney-deal-on-memory-maker-through-june/
A nice offer .. with the reduced demand in Memory Maker (due to having to have masked shots, due to less photo opportunties (due to no M&Gs), due to simply people carrying around high quality phones in their pockets) ... I can imagine them doing even more in the future to incentivize the use of this product.

Is this just aimed to maybe locals getting Florida discount tickets or Silver APs that probably will go multiple times? I doubt many non-APs (who already have this perk) will be going more than once during these next 6 months. *shrug*

yeah, it feels like another offer that sounds good, but how many people will really benefit? How many people will visit multiple times between now and June and don't have an AP that includes photopass already?

I mean, I am sure there are some and this is great for them, but sort of a "meh" promotion

Feels like Disney marketing is working overtime to throw out offers that sound good but are limited in who they are actually useful for. They are in a weird spot where they want to get people there .. but they don't want to make it too cheap (they don't want to devalue their future products and they need the revenue) .. and they also don't want to draw too many people there since they have reduced capacity.

We could probably come up with some fun ones here:
"Stay at a Disney Resort and get a free BBB makeover (in 2022)"
"Get a free 30-day trial to Disney+ with any ticket package!"
"Free parking at Disney resorts with a 4+ night package!"

I still think what they want is to get the maximum amount of $ out of each person that comes - vs wanting to maximize # of people coming

So if they are seeing a lower % of people buying photopass, then they through out this offer that makes it look like photopass is a better deal (even if not really)

Best part "hundreds of years before the Skywalkers". Yay!!

Was kind of disappointed to see Yoda. I wanted all new stuff. I hope he isn't a major focus.

Well, Yoda would have been around though. I think it's fine to include him as a connective point, but I am excited that the rest is all-new stuff. I am looking forward to the show, though I think it'll be a while.

The story of real baby yoda. We think this book will tie into Acolyte? If so, I might finally have to read a Star Wars book

Not too sure. This is going to be a vast series of different books. YA titles and comic books and a couple of novels, all covering different stories. I don’t think they’ll be direct tie ins to Acolyte yet though, based on the descriptions provided. Plus, Acolyte is going to take place in the final days of the High Republic, and these books are probably well before that (if they‘re smart and want to maximize the story time in this time period).
