It looks like the Shuttle Columbia has broken up over Texas on reentry. No contact has been made with the ship for almost two hours. No confirmation on where the shuttle and it's astronauts may have landed. If you were planning on a side trip to KSC in the near future, you will want to change your plans, it has gone to high secure alert status.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the families.

It's so very sad.

What a brave and confident crew we have lost on this mission. Even though the possibility of demise is ever-present in this profession, it is never expected. These seven persons were "expected" to return to NASA and their awaiting families. My heart goes out to all involved, from mission control associates (whom spoke with them daily during the 16-day trip), to immediate family. May they find peace, and the strength to move forward, and continue with the vitally important U.S. Space Program. These seven persons, a special breed of people among us all, were doing exactly what they loved (their passion) at the time of their passing. The untold risks were a part of their daily routine/consciousness. Unlike the thousands of unsuspecting persons, aboard the crafts and in the towers on 9/11. :(
