Port Transfer for First Timers

We'll be doing our first DCL cruise on the Wish, a 4 night Halloween on the High Seas sailing after 5 days in the parks. Since we are staying on property at the GF, is there any extra benefit to booking the transfer through the cruise line or are we better off going with a town car? There are only two of us, no kids, but we will be checking bags and will possibly have lightsabers.

With just the two of you, the DCL transfers are likely to be more cost effective compared to most alternatives. A rental car could be close to the same cost, but there is the added hassle of pickup and drop off of the rental.

Not if you rent the car upon arrival at the airport and keep the car for your entire trip. Yes, you have to pay to park at the port, but week long rentals are typically more budget friendly than two one-way rentals. Plus, you also then have your transportation from the airport to the hotel, and you can also choose to drive to parks or off-property for meals or shopping or whatever. And you even have flexibility to do something the morning of the cruise...even rope drop a park to do some rides before zipping to the port.

The lightsaber adds another special quandary. If you buy the less-expensive collapsable souvenirs, you are probably fine...but if you go to Savi's to build a lightsaber, those do not collapse and are no longer allowed on board DCL per the recent policy updates. If so, a rental car makes the perfect place to store your lightsaber.

For two people, DCL's transfers are likely your best deal.

DCL will also store your lightsaber and you pick it up at the end of the cruise. I have done this with my electric tea kettle and Swiss Army knife.

If you've never driven to the port before, I'd suggest taking DCL transfers. You don't need to worry about navigating your way there, getting stuck in traffic (a very real possibility), or returning the car. Very efficient, very little hassle and you can begin putting your brain on autopilot sooner.

Staying at a deluxe resort you will most likely get one of the earliest port arrival times and boarding groups if you book DCL transfers. If you have to select a PAT on your check in day you'll likely get a later time since the earlier ones will have been taken by platinum, gold and silver castaway club members.

We prefer Disney transfers. they take your bags from the resort room and we have been one of the first groups to arrive at the port. you can see all the details about taking the transfers here.

Thank you so much for all the advice! We will definitely go with the DCL transfers, since I know we are at a disadvantage being first timers...I wanted to get on board ASAP to get on the waiting list for Palo.
