I’m back for another working vacation. Flew down late last night. Solo until Friday evening when aunt and uncle fly in. And the rest of extended family comes in Saturday. Everyone’s plans are a bit different. Since I’ll be working most days, I’m focused on relaxing and enjoying family time.

Pretty much my only set in stone dining plan is Hoop Dee Doo Revue on the 19th. Otherwise it’s all up in the air. I’ll try to keep this mostly up to date with whatever I’m eating/drinking.

I got in late last night so just grabbed a Wawa sandwich for a late dinner. I’m staying at Hyatt Place Lake Buena Vista until Friday when I move to Dolphin for rest of the trip.

Lunch break today, I grabbed an 11:05 reservation at Boma - a new-to-me restaurant. I know I’ve been in AKL before to eat at Jiko, but it’s been at least a decade. The resort is great. I really liked the vibe.

Boma was very good. I’m not a buffet person, so this will never be my favorite. But it was good enough that I’d like to come back some time to try it for dinner. A mix of standard Disney breakfast items and dishes with African flair.
6606EA5B-6BB9-4027-9491-BAF875DBE8F1.jpeg

First plate - ham with an excellent mustard sauce, sausage, eggs with goat cheese and chives (very very good), and plantain.
9C83ED83-92DA-470F-9593-885F96AC1763.jpeg

Plate two I went with the spicy African stew over grits. This was spicy flavorful, not spicy hot and I really enjoyed it. Plus asparagus, deviled egg with smoked salmon (meh), and African omelet thing.

Fruit and avocado salad.

And lastly I needed another taste of ham and mustard sauce (nom nom), sausage, and watermelon with pistachio crumble. And for dessert a sticky bun with caramel praline sauce - this was decadent.

All in all a solid first Disney meal for the trip.

I grabbed a late reservation at Le Cellier for tonight. But the weather forecast is looking iffy so I’m not sure what I’ll end up doing.

Decided to stick with EPCOT plan and glad I did. It’s sprinkled on and off. But hasn’t been too wet so far.

I went on Mission Space and tried to get into Space 220 bar but it was a 1.5 hour wait. It’s always worth a try. Instead spent the evening meandering around world showcase snacking, drinking, window shopping, and looking at all the topiaries.

The lox everything benedict from Brunchcot booth. Very good although the egg was a little under for my taste - not a fan of undercooked egg white.

Violet sake in Japan - first time trying this. A little on the sweet side but refreshing.

Made it most of the way around and still had some time to kill, so grabbed a beer at Rose and Crown and wandered over to watch the Spaceship Earth light show.

The over to Le Cellier. Based on reviews I’ve read, I expected this meal to be meh at best. Happily it was several steps above that. It’s certainly not on par with the highest tier of Disney restaurants, but I had excellent food and friendly, but rough around the edges, service.

Bread and butter.

Cheese soup. This was excellent - pretzel bread dipped in soup was a great bite.
DE633CCB-CB1E-4F46-957E-03B106C3BDBF.jpeg

Victorian Raspberry cocktail. This was nicely balanced. Would have been better if it (and my water) had arrived before my soup instead of after.

Filet. This was a very good steak. Well seasoned and charred on the outside and perfectly medium rare inside. Mushroom risotto went very well with it. This was too much food after all of that cheese soup; brought the rest back to hotel with me. My breakfast tomorrow will be significantly better than the free hotel breakfast.

Glass of Malbec with the steak.

Over all it was a great meal. Although for the price point, I’d probably go to Flying Fish, Toppolinos, or Shula’s before I’d hurry back here.

Walked out through an empty EPCOT. The topiaries are great - Flower & Garden might be my favorite festival.

Skipped lunch in favor of my leftover filet and ducking out of work early. I’m off tomorrow so it’s officially the weekend.

I bought genie+ and have been stacking LL reservations at DHS all day. Sadly Rise $LL were gone before they went on sale for non-resort guests. Can’t win ‘Em all.

Went on TT then grabbed a kahluatini at the Joffreys cart.

I killed off some heavy rain browsing in gift stores before MMRR. I was super proud of myself for getting on the Brown Derby Lounge waitlist while waiting to unload from MMRR and getting the table is ready notification as I walked over. Except I accidentally put myself on the Brown Derby Restaurant list. Oops. I rolled with it and enjoyed some extra AC time.

Started with a Derby Cosmo

I scored a late Rodeo Roundup reservation, so this was meant to be “snacky”. Went with escargot casino - very rich, very good.
A93BF6B2-AAD3-423C-8B2A-979097207A8B.jpeg

And the burrata tomato salad. This was excellent - not perhaps the best I’ve ever had, but by far the best I’ve had on Disney property so far.

Then chose to drink my desert - grapefruit cake martini. Manages to be dessert-y without being too sweet - a nice balancing act.

Did a little Star Wars loop riding Star Tours and then MFSR twice via single rider line. Plus did some meandering around Batuu and then through Toy Story Land.

Browsed stores a bit more and finally belied up to the bar at my favorite DHS bar - Tune In. The bartenders here are super friendly. I had my standard pink drink - vodka, soda, splash cranberry.

As dusk fell I wandered back over to Toy Story land for the last round of LL reservations - Alien Swirling Saucers, Toy Story Midway Mania, and Slinky Dog Dash. Especially love SDD in the dark.

Checked in for my Rodeo Roundup BBQ reservation 20 minutes early, but had to wait until about five minutes past reservation time before being seated. Not a big deal - extra time to work up that appetite. I'm conflicted about this place - my expectations were that it would be mediocre at best. And it definitely exceeded that low, low bar.

The theming is fabulous. And the cast members were super into it. I was pleasantly surprised how the whole restaurant played along when Andy was spotted.
AC599EFD-70D6-4BC2-A493-CEB1B4FD6BDF.jpeg

I ordered a mule which was decent - clearly a premixed cocktail from a giant jug - but still enjoyable to me.
65B44BE2-890E-451B-A1CA-07382B815F43.jpeg

Salads and biscuits were brought all at once. Biscuits were excellent - hot and flaky. I'm not a red pepper jelly fan but that's on me not the food. Salads were fine. I thought the cucumber and tomato was the best composed salad. The romaine and kale salad was boring to me - not bad just not exciting in any way. The watermelon salad was just cubes of watermelon with like four tiny shavings of mint - not sure that actually counts as a salad, but the watermelon was good.

I wasn't expecting much from the BBQ meat and I was pleasantly surprised. The sausage was my favorite - nice flavor. Brisket and ribs were good. Dark meat chicken was excellent, but breast was dry.
B79AF25C-17C9-4540-A526-6B690420E084.jpeg

I tried all three sauces - sweet was my favorite as it had a bit of smoke which I like in my BBQ sauce. And don't be afraid of the spicy - I'm not a fan of spicy things in general but didn't find it to be too hot.
28506EE2-9C8B-4B52-B81E-1C458FB54EAD.jpeg

Sides were a mixed bag. Fried pickles were very good - the best of the sides for sure.
42BE0394-9FF1-4D4A-B215-CD24F8FE0AF8.jpeg

Beans were decent. Tasted slightly better than the from a can stuff I pull out of my pantry as a side dish on very, very lazy cooking days.
7BD06341-10A5-4582-B7A6-18C47D26B4F3.jpeg

Mac and cheese was meh at best.
F160997F-2360-4DE1-829E-CB24B1CBC543.jpeg

I'm not sure what I was picturing when I ordered loaded tater tots, I mean potato barrels, but it wasn't this. Taste was fine, but everything was super soggy - even the bits of potato that don't seem to have been sauced directly.
B31E7290-F467-428B-B996-D780D9C4AC5D.jpeg

Went with the chocolate silk pie for dessert. A nice little treat. Strong chocolate flavor - very rich.
DAD09D69-674E-427C-95B0-13412429E0CD.jpeg

The whole experience took about an hour from seating to leaving. And larger groups around me seemed to be on about the same pace. Probably because it was end of night. I actually thought the pace was just right. I know others have said it was a two hour experience for them, but that seems way too long for what it is to me.

Would I come back? I wouldn't refuse to come back and if someone wanted to try it I'd come with them. But, I can't see this taking the place of my normal Hollywood Brown Derby Lounge or boat over to Boardwalk-area resorts routine.

I had a post-park close reservation at Oga's for a night cap. I originally had a 10:55 reservation - which I think is the latest they do. When I finished dinner earlier than planned, I was able to modify that to a 10:40 which was nice. Walking over to Batuu after dinner, they had cast members stationed about halfway through Toy Story Land blocking it off. They verified my Oga's reservation and then had a CM escorted me over to Batuu. I was surprised that at 10:20ish on a 10PM park close night, SDD was already finished and Toy Story land was mostly cleared out. I was able to get into Oga's a bit early and lingered over a Jedi Mind Trick before walking out through a very empty park.

All in all, it was a great evening in DHS. I initially planned to hit up MK tomorrow, but I'm not really feeling it. I'm going to sleep in and play it by ear. Maybe MK, maybe AK, maybe no park at all. I love the freedom of coming to Disney so often. I know I'll be back so I don't have to push myself to do it all this trip. I have some errands to run - a Target order to pick up and stops at a pharmacy and dollar tree. As the person with a car for a few days, I've been getting lots of requests. My aunt and uncle get in tomorrow afternoon and the rest of the family on Saturday. Looking forward to seeing everyone, but especially my niece and nephews.

Shaping up to be a no park day. Slept in. Ran errands and now over at Disney Springs having a leisurely lunch.

Wine Bar George - Impressive wine list (which is to be expected). I went with a Georgian orange wine which was mild and very drinkable.

Homemade avocado ricotta on toast. Very good. The picked onion relish on top and hot honey drizzle make the dish.

I’m feeling boathouse call my name for round two.

Aunt and uncle made it in and we got settled into the Dolphin. Then headed off to walk around boardwalk. Tried to get seats at the bar at Flying Fish, but it was packed. Ended up at Crew’s Cup Lounge - another new-to-me place.

I had the Tropical Storm cocktail.

And mussels. These were excellent.

Uncle liked his meatballs and salad. And aunt liked her beef tips. And they both appreciated the deep wine list. Definitely a hit.

Pretty boring day today. But that’s the way I like it sometimes. Went grocery shopping for perishables now that we have a fridge to store them in. And got checked into the new rooms for everyone coming in today and got things organized for everyone. Eventually made it over to Disney Springs with aunt, uncle and a family friend for lunch at Morimotos. Ordered a bunch of dishes for the table. Food was excellent. Service was not meh - hopefully just an off day as in the pat I’ve had great service here.

I had a cherry blossom ale.

Your trip is off to a great foodie start. You hit several of my faves - burrata salad at Brown Derby, Wine Bar George, dockside bar at Boathouse. Good to know about Roundup Rodeo... I'm not a big BBQ fan and don't really love family style service but the theming sounds really fun. Late reservation at Oga's sounds like a pro move! I'll have to be on the lookout for that. Enjoy the time with your family!!
