The Journeys of Lil Medic

We got up this morning and watched the sunrise, had some breakfast then headed into Key West. We parked at the center of town just before Duval st. Cost is 4.00 per hr. We grabbed our water bottles and started making our way to the Southern most point.

Here is the Key West light house, we did not take the tour.

We did more exploring in Key West then it was time for some swimming at Smathers Beach. The water was nice and warm.

While we didn‘t take the tour we did walk past the Hemingway house, on the opposite side of the street from the lighthouse.
We parked in the middle of town just before Duval st. and walked Duval east to the southern most point then walked up Whitehead street over to Mallory square then proceeded to walk back up Duval to the car.
There is a lot of history in Key West, and I wish I had more time to explore it, but it is HOT here, not really humid, just hot. While we are having a good time here, DW and I have decided that Key West is a one and done for us. It is super crowded and with all the scooters and golf carts running around along with cars it makes it hard to get anywhere.

First some pictures from around the campground then a review.

I know a lot of you are not tent campers but here is a water front tent site. The water front tent sites are primitive, no electric or water.

There is a food truck at the entrance of the campground that is open from 6:30 - 2:00, and closed on Mondays.

Watch how you drive in the campground, where here are chickens running afoul

There are coconuts in the trees,

and a banana tree somewhere but I haven’t found that yet.

And you can rent scooters, bikes or golf carts, gas powered and registered so you drive them into KeyWest.

There is a nice little spot just behind the Tiki lounge at the pool, Elsie’s Tiki Garden that is nice and relaxing. There is 2 high top tables and a few benches with a water fall and plenty of shade. This is where DW and I are now as I am writing this report and she is working on her book.

@JETS70, as I mentioned earlier I had watched a YT review of Boyd’s Key West campground after I made my reservation. And I was thinking to myself, I just paid 90.00 a night for this. But the damage was done and I wouldn’t get my deposit refunded so like I said I came in with a opened mind.

My thoughts an Boyd’s Key West Campground

8DABD676-BEF3-4BAB-B2B3-ECC709E56692.jpeg

While technically the Campground is not located in Key West, it is located on Stock Island, a short 4-5 mile drive to the center of KW. There is 2 shopping plazas with food and department stores and restaurants.

Here is the Campground map

5325EFB9-42F3-4DFB-AE77-8E46C292094B.jpeg

They have Kayak rentals at one of the beaches also.

DB800052-212D-4987-9F44-61BAC6CC2A56.jpeg

While there are beaches there is no swimming. While there is seaweed washed up on the beaches, just like at all the public swimming area that we went to in KW, you can put a chair out and relax.

Let’s talk noise. While Boyd’s is located a little ways, maybe 1/2 mile in town and on a main rd. you can’t really tell unless you have one of those back in sites along Maloney dr.

KW does have a airport and also a N.A.S. near by, yes, you will have noise from planes and jets.

For the RV’ers coming in they do escort you to you site and help you back in and if needed pull out. There are vehicles parked right next to the road so it is tight, but doable.

8339C53A-5F01-4BC3-B931-AE17A5D48834.jpeg

Most of the rev sites have a concrete padfor the picnic table to sit on.

Bathhouses, while there are plenty around and they do a good job at keeping them clean, there is only 2 toilets and 1 urinal with 3 sinks and one electric hand dryer, DW says 3 toilets in women’s room. The showers we have been using, 4 of them between the men’s and women’s room, unisex, are big and spacious. I would say bigger than FW showers. There is no bench to put your belongings, there is 3 hooks to hang your stuff from in the dry area of the shower and no shelf to put body products on, you have to use the floor, UNLESS you use one of the end showers which has a vent sill to put your products on. I will post a pic of showers later I don’t have one now.

RV sites are close together but not like the review I watched. Peoples awnings are not touching other peoples rv’s, even the ones that have slides on both sides.

359840A8-704B-4FF9-A375-2DFC83A9969E.jpeg

I will get better pics of rv’s next to each other, plenty of room.

If you have a boat you can bring that behind your MH and they will use a bobcat to launch and retrieve so you don’t have to back down the ramp.

8EFE5580-7067-4F6A-B99E-F856DCCCF0F6.jpeg

If you do bring a boat or rent one they do have dock side sites.

AE0091C1-FD93-4276-A0A4-DFF0E48F8CF4.jpeg

There is plenty for the kids to do, pool, game area park is big enough to bike ride, tv’s with the remotes outside so they can watch what they want. You can walk your dogs, plenty of pet stations around and dumpsters. That was another complaint from the review, dog poo everywhere, I haven’t noticed, and I walk this campground at least 15 times a day.

What else, the review mentioned the smell of the campground was awful, I haven’t noticed any type of offensive smell.

Price yes the price is high and while you might not have a huge site and little privacy, your in a tourist area. The only time your neighbors are going to see you is if they walk by or your out under your awning and there inside looking out there windows.

Thanks @snowmedic for the campground review. We are ok with the close sites.......like you said, its a tourist area. Kind of reminds you of the sites at Camp Rivers Landing and Rivers Edge at Pigeon Forge.

Thanks again,

Steve

Getting back to the review,
They sell 10# bags of ice for 3.50 and firewood for 12.89 per bundle with tax.

There is a dump station and the only thing I haven’t seen is a propane filling station.
There is a take a book, leave a book library in the laundry room

along with a iron and ironing board.
Washers are 2.00 for 30 minutes and 2.00 for 45 min. of drying
Just like at other campgrounds the people are friendly and the host are great. Our power went out this morning on the 20 and 30 amp side. I found a camp host and they where at our site within minutes and power restored. A main breaker on the big panel tripped, not the ones at the site.

While I did mention earlier that I didn’t notice a smell, I could to night but it that ocean, marine type smell. Not the smell of the camp septic.

For us this would be a campground that we would come back to. With the size, location, cleanliness and friendliness of the entire park, I would definitely recommend it.

I will leave you with some nighttime pics

We left Boyd’s Key West at 8:00 a.m. Monday morning and returned home to Vermont at 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday. I did stop in S.C. for 6 hrs. of sleep. With driving down and back and around Fl. we put 4800 miles on the car. We now have 51,000 miles and I ordered new tires this morning. That was one thing I was worried about while we where there.

The keys where beautiful and the drive on the seven mile bridge was breathtaking. If we do decide in the future to go back we will be looking to stay in Marathon.

A wild Iguana that was roaming around in KW. It was outside in a little cubby and his tail was on the sidewalk, a man pulling a small cart ran over his tail and it ran into this store.

And some souvenirs from KW.

While walking around on Whitehead street in KW, DW took a bad fall and skinned both her knees and elbow, she had shoulder pain for 2 days but is feeling better, I only mention it because the sidewalk in one area that went to was cobble stone and very uneven and she tripped on one. So be careful when walking in KW.

Hope she feels better. String of bad luck going around it seems. Glad you got to go on the trip.
Thanks, she is feeling better. We where going to spend a week in St. Mary’s GA. but looking at the extended forecast it was calling for rain most of the time we where there. So instead of spending it in a tent we decided to come home to the snow. :rotfl2:

Watching the weather and hoping for better days before heading to Maine, they are calling for rain while we are there but at least we will have the MH. I would still rather get out and explore.

Got the MH back from the mechanic, changed spark plugs, wires, and fuel filter. He said since I ran it to almost 1/8 tank probably stirred up some setament when I fuel up. It is running a lot smoother now.

Also got all our stuff put back in and rearranged from our trip to Florida.
We have 2 more days of below freezing this week then I will dewinterize and flush the system and make sure the wate pump and hot water tank heats.

Going to rain the weekend we will be in Maine so we cancelled that reservation, our next trip won’t be until the weekend of May 21.

We are rearranging / painting a few rooms in the house to get ready for DW’s mother to move in with us from Arizona in a few weeks.

Yep, hopefully just a few tune up items will have it running great for you.

Great trip Vince! Appreciate the pics and information.

Great report on your Keys trip @snowmedic. I love it down there, but like you Key West itself was a one and done. Just too much going on and we had a tough time finding a place to park. We checked Boyds when we were there but thought it might be a little tight for us. We stayed at Blue Water Key which was MM 14. We would stay there again but I want to try the upper Keys also. More to do up there within short driving distances.

I think from all the trip reports I have seen about boyds is its worth it for the proximity to Key West for part of the trip, but then move north a little to enjoy some peace and quiet?

Great report and I hope you had a great time! The motorhome behaving better is a good thing. A friend with an older motorhome had some issues of stirred up gunk and put in a primary filter that was easier to change when he started to clog up the smaller filter by the carb. https://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS/555/15172/10002/-1

Worth a thought if you have the issue again?

We spent 4 nights at Boyd’s and ran into Key West for shopping, sightseeing, and swimming and thought that it was enough time for us. I told DW that if we did go back down that I wanted to stay around Marathon because it didn’t look to be all hat crowded.
