Trip Report - - First Time to Hong Kong and HKDL!!

Mmmmm! My kind of food too! A lot of people would be put off by the chicken feet, but I say, "bring it on!"

I guess I'm weird for a white chick, but there really isn't something that I wouldn't eat. Just all depends on how it's flavored.

Why shouldn't we use the napkins? Are they expensive? Or laced with bubonic plague?

I like chicken feet too! It has its unique texture and taste to it.

In Guangzhou, 99% of the restaurants charge you for the usage of their napkins. So everyone is encouraged to bring their own.

I don't do chicken feet. I guess I'm a kinda weird Asian gal! :rotfl:
But I love the look of that Hainanese chicken.

Interesting to see that toilets like that still exist.

Looking forward to more from Guangzhou.

12/15/2012 - More Guangzhou

We only booked the Hotel Landmark Canton for one night since it was an old hotel with a lot of history and the only one next to the Pearl River. So we checked out and headed over to the Sheraton Guangzhou.

The Sheraton Guangzhou is located in the Tianhe District. This area is more commercialized meaning there's plenty of malls and restaurants around. Plus convenient to have supermarkets nearby as well.

The smog is very noticeable in the city area. Here's the view from our hotel room. Down there is the Tianhe Mall. It is one huge mall! That's the same mall where we went for Hainanese chicken the night before (see previous post)

Today is a much slower day. We are off to Taoist cemetery to visit my wife's Grandparents. Dinner will be a big family gathering with my wife's relatives. I'll definitely stick out like a sore thumb.

The drive is crazy because the cars, pedestrians and bicyclists all share the same road! It's definitely crazy! Wish I can embed a video of that here. Maybe I'll put a link once I upload it to YouTube.

Not much to see in the park at night. I heard it's a lot livelier during the day with performers and people singing karaoke. Much more in the next day's post. So we left and headed to a massage spa. Massage spas in Guangzhou are very family oriented. Friends and family gather and lounge in a room while people massage your feet. You can watch TV, smoke or have a drink while getting for feet massaged.

That's it for today in Guangzhou! Tomorrow...more Guangzhou!

12/16/2012 - More Guangzhou & Museums

Today we're traveling to another cemetery which is like an hour's drive away. It's located in a rural area. A relative's friend has a van so he can drive me, my wife and parents-in-law there.

Here's where we stayed in the middle of the city

After the cemetery visit we were hungry. We did pass by this local place but my wife translated it to me. We did NOT go in and no I won't tell what this says because I don't approve of what they serve :furious:

Finally lunch time! Sorry I didn't take pics plus I have no idea what we're eating. My wife just ordered a noodle dish for me. Outdoor street seatings were cramped. I was advised not to whip out my iPhone to take pics otherwise I'll be targeted as a tourist and easily picked by thieves.

One odd thing to see in the park was parents letting their kids urinate or poop out in the open. This is like right in the middle of the cultural park and the bathrooms were like 20 feet away! My wife explained to me from their language that they are not Guangzhou natives and most likely from northern China. But still...the bathroom was like 20 feet away!

So we're headed to a museum. I'm not sure which of Guangzhou's museum this is but I was told it was a district one. This is a museum that houses restorations. This building was almost destroyed during the Cultural Revolution. Kids were encouraged to throw stones at the statues to knock it down. All of these are currently being restored.

Looks great! I'm going to have to remember to watch my photo taking in China. Good move not to take the big camera with you so that you can blend in more like a local.

12/17/2012 - Leaving Guangzhou and Off to Macau! Part 1

We're sad to leave Guangzhou. Too many places we haven't seen yet plus we wanted to finish checking out that huge mall next to the hotel.

Headed to the gym since I didn't want to miss my weekly workouts. Gym is nicely equipped. No one there except me.

I have to get my RMB changed to Hong Kong dollars. Macau does NOT accept RMB at all! Macau only accepts Hong Kong dollars or Macau money so it is advisable to get your money exchanged first. The exchange rates in Macau is more favorable towards HKD than RMB

After arriving in Macau, the immigration lines were so crazy! No one reads which line is for which type of passports/visas. I went to the line for "Foreigners" and noticed the people in front of me were Chinese Nationals. There's other lines for that category but I guess they just line up wen they see an empty spot. Plus no one reinforces this. :confused3

So an hour later...customs. Nothing to declare so we just walked to our bus headed to the Venetian.

We're here at the Venetian!

All of the shops were closed at 10pm so we headed over to the casino for some slots. I thought I won big until I converted my Hong Kong dollars to US...nope! lol

Headed back to the room and calling it a night.

Catching up. Looks like a great couple of days!
Interesting to see that you found Macau didn't take the Rimimbi. I actually did buy Rimimbi and managed to spend some of it in Macau. I bought my egg tarts with Rimimbi....exchange rate of $1RMB = $1MOP = $1HKD. Thing is that after I bought the egg tarts, I realised that I had paid more to convert Aussie dollars to RMB than HKD; so the exchange rate did NOT work out in my favour. The Macanese certainly took HKD readily enough.

Yeah it was weird when I whipped out my RMB and they said they only take HKD or MOP and change will be in MOP. I guess it's best to convert to and use MOP first.

The casinos ONLY take HKD. Anything else will have to be converted at the cash cage.

Wow! That's a change from April last year. I bought the egg tarts at Lord Stow's at the Venetian; and they had a notice prominently displayed at the cash register with the conversion rates.

We got our change in HKD; which wasn't an issue for me. I got offered MOP first; but as we were heading back to HK, I asked for HKD instead.

12/18/2012 - More Macau, Food & Museums

Today's our last day in Macau. We'll be leaving around late evening so we have lots to do before then like foods and museums.

It's a bit gloomy and colder today. I am a bit cold since I didn't pack a jacket with me. Plus there was a light rain drizzle too. We went to this store to buy a jacket. I guess I can fit a XL snugly. That's the size difference with the US...buy one or two size bigger in order to fit.

They definitely have lots of casino buses going from one casino to another so we headed to Sands which is located on the older Macau island.

Nice pictures of your time in Macau. Looking forward to HK again.

12/19/2012 - HK High Tea & The Stars

Definitely back in Hong Kong and we're headed to Tsim Sha Tsui for High Tea at The Peninsula Hotel. My wife wanted to try it out. This is a first on the Star Ferry for me. Heck it's a first of everything in Hong Kong for me!

12/20/2012 - Dim Sum, The Peak and Fake People

Early morning we headed to dim sum in the Time Square building. There's such a huge line as this place was popular. I believe it's called Cheng's Cuisine. After an hour's wait we got our table. Also prices are reduce by 2pm :)

Hi Bilybuff,

Well all I can say is Thank you. This is a fantastic TR and I am loving all the food and hotel photos. We are heading to HK and Macau for Christmas and of course HKDL :) We can't wait and your TR is keeping us captivated :thumbsup2

I can't wait for your next up date

Loving the food porn.....the high tea at the Peninsula, dim sum and dinner. Seems like you're doing the sights round HK. And nice to see the Christmas tree at 1881.

12/21/2012 - Bus Loads of People @ Ocean Park!

Today we're headed to Ocean Park! It's just a 20 minute walk from our hotel room. Since we're checking out today, my mother-in-law came to grab our stuff so we can head on over to the park.

As we approach Ocean Park, we see a lot of tour buses and people. Wow on a Friday morning??

Today's weather was nice and warm so I took off my T-shirt and wore a tanktop. I got weird stares from everyone :confused3

Penguins! People didn't read the signs that said no flash photography allowed. So a lot of flashing was going on :confused3 So my wife "scolded" people by telling themno flash and to read the sign s

We finally had enough of the craziness, ie., people shoving, running us over, etc. so we decided to head back down for lunch

It was around 3:30pm so we decided to head back home and rest. There were no buses heading back! I think some buses only run on Saturday and Sundays but not on Fridays so we walked instead. Good thing the apartment wasn't that far away.

That's it for the photos today. We all headed to Chai Wan to a relative's place for dinner. Tomorrow will be more shopping in Causeway Bay.

We're off to shop in Causeway Bay!

We're headed to this section called Lee Gardens which has a lot of clothing stores. The most notable stores to shop at are G.O.D. (Goods of Desire) and Muji. We did stop by Uniqlo because we saw a lot of sales there.

Don't have much photos to show since my hands were full from holding shopping bags

Finally dinner time so we're at this building that has restaurants on each floor.

We're at Sweetheart Garden Steakhouse. The steaks are from New Zealand and quite yummy!

After that more walking around Times Square. I don't think my wife is tired of this area. There's so many stores to shop at and we haven't even seen the all!

Grabbed a quick hot drink at a 7 Eleven

I think my posts are getting shorter and shorter and our days in Hong Kong are getting shorter too...

So I'll combine the next few days into one post.

12/23/2012 to 12/24/2012 - More Food & Shopping!

12/23/2012

Headed out to Aberdeen today to shop til we drop

I don't blame my wife for wanting to go shopping because everything is pretty much cheap and affordable. Plus you don't pay any sales taxes either! I can't say the same for me since I can't find any clothes that would fit me. Most places don't go past XL and I can fit XXL in Hong Kong sizes. :confused3

My wife met up with her old high school classmate to catch up on stuff so I grabbed some KFC. It was awesome! They have the sweet corn fried chicken. The best of the best are the Portuguese egg tarts! Holy melt-in-your-mouth delicious!

Hong Kong is pretty clean unlike NYC

So, I'm hungry again and my wife suggested fried dumplings

I think we called it a day. We had to go back home for dinner. We also have to sort out our clothes since we're leaving on 12/28/2012

12/24/2012

So I headed to Tai Koo via the bus and MTR to meet up with a coworker. She works in the Hong Kong regional office while I'm in NYC. She took me to this dim sum place over at City Plaza. Okay, I think there's an obsession with malls in Hong Kong because City Plaza is made up of 4 parts... City Plaza I, II, III & IV. I got lost walking around here and ended up going in circles.

The dim sum place. It got quite crowded due to the lunch crowd but we got there early

I think we're in City Plaza II...

I think my wife is starting to slow down on the shopping. We left pretty early and stayed at the apartment to pack some more.

Next day...Christmas! We're going to Stanley for a beach BBQ!

12/25/2012 - Christmas BBQ in Stanley!

We're headed to Stanley at St. Stephens Beach Park to BBQ on Christmas day. I think this is a tradition for most Hong Kongers to do on Christmas. We saw a lot of people doing BBQ but the part we're headed to was further out so that'll mean fewer crowds.

Temperatures not that hot or too cold

We ended around 8:00pm and headed to the Stanley Promenade

8378008833_cccf511ed4_c.jpg

I didn't take much photos here since we're exhausted from the BBQ and eating.

The Stanley promenade has shops and restaurants. I think most of the non-Asians live around this area. Finally English speaking people! :goodvibes

More shopping here before we take the bus back home.
