Two Germans Dine Deluxe Again ... (FINISHED!)

I remember your first report! I loved reading it. Your perspective is so fun! We're dining deluxe this time (not sure if we'll regret it...) and are considering a cruise so I'm looking forward to your reviews!

Hi nodnol, thank you for coming along! (I hope I'm not saying something silly here - but if I remember correctly, you are Flossbolna's sister, right?)
That's correct and she mentioned to me that you started the dining review! Otherwise I wouldn't have noticed... Are you planning to do a review or a trip report for this year's trips?

...

On this evening, I also got a chance to look at a birthday cake that our waiters presented to one of our tablemates:

...[/I]

First of all, great report! You made me miss Palo... :sad1:
And secondly, that is called the Celebration cake and has got to be THE BEST non chocolate cake I have ever tasted in my whole life.
I've been trying to find it anywhere else and failed.
I hope on our next cruise I can find it somehow... :thumbsup2

Yay to my first reader!

Wow, what a welcome - how flattering, thank you! I shall try to live up to these high expectations, lose lots of sleep about it and fail dismally. Not. Hopefully. :thumbsup2

HA! You will not fail dismally! You rock!:thumbsup2

Love to read the European dining reviews. Have started reading your last one :thumbsup2

I really need to learn to not look at Dining Reports when I'm hungry because at this point a bowl of cereal is just not going to cut it.

Baked Alaska - It's a dessert made with ice cream and sponge cake that is then covered in meringue and then they either put in in a broiler or as in your picture basically set it on fire to bake and crisp up the outside of the meringue. The ice cream is safe inside though and doesn't melt. It's yummy!

Sounds wonderful - I need to learn not to read your descriptions when I'm hungry! :) I should have ordered that!

Thank you! Sorry that the cruise part is a bit short this time, but feel free to ask if you have any questions about Disney cruises and dining on them!

Great pictures! I can't wait for more!

Thank you - next instalment coming up in only a minute!

Glad I remembered correctly. Yes, I am sort of planning reviews again for my upcoming trips, but experience tells me that they may be a while in the making ... :rolleyes1

Wow, I wish I had known that, then I would have insisted on trying it! We are celebrating our wedding anniversary on our next cruise, so maybe we will get lucky with a cake like this :wizard:

HA! You will not fail dismally! You rock!:thumbsup2

:flower3: Thank you, I have to tell my DH that I rock! :thumbsup2

fantastic reviews so far and beautiful pictures. Subscribing to the rest ;)

Thank you! My pictures would be much better if I had ever taken the time to really study my camera's manual, I'm afraid I mostly take pictures in automatic mode. Not too good for indoor shots!

Have fun with both my reviews!

Well, my dining reviews (links in signature) are from a German perspective as well, in case you need more reading material. :goodvibes

I absolutely second that - they are great to read, and Flossbolna has been around much longer than me! (That thing with following in the footsteps again ...:))

Great, welcome in! :)

So after a week of fun and relaxation on the Disney Magic, we were all set for 11 days of fun and action at Walt Disney World. (Tough life, I know.) We got off the ship in the early morning, picked up our rental car, drove from Port Canaveral to WDW, dropped off our luggage at the Beach Club Villas (our room not being ready at this early hour, of course) and headed straight over to Epcot.

Having only stayed at the Wilderness Lodge before, it was wonderful to be able to actually just stroll over to Epcot from our hotel!
That of course meant that we entered Epcot through the “back entrance” at World Showcase – and that in turn meant that one of the first things we saw was scores of booths of highly mouth-watering-looking international food. Yep, the annual Food & Wine Festival was on – probably not the best time of year to be visiting on the Deluxe Dining Plan!
Then again, as the DxDP comes with two snack credits per day and person, we had a wagonload of snack credits available. So, what better way to spend some of them on than …

P1040437.jpg

Freshly Baked Waffles with Berry Compote and Whipped Cream!

Accompanied (not necessarily preceded) by …

P1040436.jpg

Steamed Mussels with Roasted Garlic Cream. Yummy! (Even though I considered it bad form that not only one but two of those five mussels were empty – I know the person at the counter is in a hurry and probably does not have the time to check every mussel when scooping, but still …)

First person to tell me which country booth this was from gets an honorary mention! ;)

Anyway, we were not here to fool around with tiny morsels of food but rather to have a real substantial lunch – so onwards we headed to Future World, and through this set of doors …

P1040460.jpg

… into The Coral Reef Restaurant.

Habitually having to pester CMs with special demands (sorry, comes from reading all this info on the DIS :rolleyes1), I politely inquired whether we might possibly have a table directly tank-side. I wasn’t holding my breath for this, as it hadn’t worked on our honeymoon. This time, however, it did!

P1040442.jpg

Slightly cross-eyed bliss at being seated directly next to the tank.

This guy fled as soon as we arrived, obviously not knowing he wasn’t on today’s menu:

P1040445.jpg

DH went for the same appetizer we had both had (and really enjoyed) last year:

P1040449.jpg

Sea and Land: Grilled shrimp with cucumber salad and BBQ beef tenderloin skewer with creamy polenta.
According to DH, this was once again a wonderful choice. Actually, I was very tempted to order it again myself and am sure I would have been happy with it, but I just couldn’t refrain from trying this:

P1040448.jpg

Steamed Mussels - with cilantro sofrito, fennel, tomatoes, and toasted ciabatta.
I hardly ever get to eat mussels when dining out at home, and I am not quite adventurous enough a cook to prepare them myself, so I happily jumped at this opportunity.
I am a huge fan of cilantro so there could have been more of that in there, but then again I would love loads of cilantro in everything, and I realize that I just can’t have that all the time :). Apart from that, I thoroughly enjoyed the mussels.

I do admit that I am having trouble at identifying DH’s main entrée, all I know is it definitely wasn’t mine ;):

P1040456.jpg

Judging from the menu, I do believe it is the Roasted Pork Tenderloin (with sage polenta, glazed root vegetables, and a calvados reduction), though.

Meanwhile, I was having something slightly more resembling the fishy fellows gliding around the tank next to us:

P1040457.jpg

The Grilled Mahi Mahi with laughing bird shrimp, hearts of palm, Jasmine rice and a coconut-lime sauce.
Sounds great, was beautifully presented too, but unfortunately it was a bit bland tastewise.
I had had my first ever dish of Mahi-Mahi on the beachfront in Port Canaveral prior to our cruise, a wonderful smoky-tasting grilled piece of fish on a bed of fresh salad, and that had convinced me that I loved mahi-mahi. This one, however, was a tad boring – and the sauce wasn’t really helping either, as it was much too light both on the coconut and the lime tastes. I am not sure now whether I was just having a “bad tastebuds day”, or whether this fish really is boring unless you grill it ferociously with all kinds of spices. I haven’t given it another try since, anyway.

When time for dessert came, DH health-consciously decided against it (I’m married to a much better person than I am myself …). No such restraint for me, however:

P1040459.jpg

I got to absolutely enjoy my Baileys and Jack Daniel's Mousse (topped with a ganache and chocolate cigar) instead.
I know, I know, not only did I have something sweet and high-caloric, but something containing alcohol, in the middle of the day. What can I say :rolleyes1.

Now, I know that this restaurant has received some not-so-favourable reviews, but we loved our meal here in ’09, and this was another very pleasurable dining experience and a great start to our WDW holiday. We will definitely be back (and we might even make a tradition out of making this our first restaurant of the trip).

Coming up next: Dinner at The Yachtsman Steakhouse ...

I am so excited that you are back and writing this review :cool1:

I loved your last one (of course we all remember you!)

Reading this has made me so excited about our first ever cruise :yay:

:rotfl2::rotfl2: All I could think about was Sebastian, in TLM, when they brought out the stuffed crabbed. I wonder if those fish in the tank were turning green.:rotfl:

I remember your last report. Glad to read another.

A Disney cruise is an absolutely wonderful experience. It is relaxing, it is magical, you get pampered, meet great people and see exciting new places.
At dinner, there was another thing that prevented me from taking too many food porn pictures: We had met a dozen extremely nice people on the cruise whose dinner table we were lucky to share every evening, and I didn’t want them to think I was totally crazy. :lmao:
So I only took a picture every now and then, almost never including DH’s food. So, there. It’s not my fault that you get to read so little – complain to our tablemates if you like. :thumbsup2

!

We were lucky enough to be one of those dozen people!!! Don't let her fool you Annika's English is remarkable. We had the best serving team on the magic and the greatest tablemate's!!!

I am excited to be reading along!!! Wish you were coming with us to Alaska.!!!

I'm a newbie who is addicted to dining reviews and I'm loving this one (especially because we're doing a cruise/WDW trip in January!). You've got a great list of restaurants and I can't wait to read all of the reviews. I'm also going to go back to read your previous review as well! Looking forward to more!

Mussels, waffles...that definitely sounds like Belgian cuisine.

Loving your report! And I had that mahi mahi dish last summer. I agree that the flavors were less interesting than expected. To me, part of the problem was that the hearts of palm were cut too small, so I could barely taste them.

That's a classic, you're right, thanks for bringing that up! Was almost spewing my coffee across the screen when I read this! :lmao:

And the honorary mention goes to ... DonaldDoleWhip, since you are right and this was indeed the Belgium booth! Hooray!
Actually, in honor of your screen name, I am even gonna go beyond a mere honorary mention and throw in the story of my first ever Dole Whip right now, even though that happened much later in this trip. ;)

So, here goes: Believe it or not, but I had never gotten around to trying one of these on our honeymoon trip … a sad omission which I was determined to remedy this time round. The weather was wonderful, hot and sunny, we were exhausted, so this seemed just the thing to have. So I went to find us a table at the little glass pavilion thingy next to where they sell the Dole Whips while DH, ever the gentleman, went and got one for me.

P1060124.jpg

However, it seemed like the powers that be didn't agree with my plans. Because just as DH sets down in front of me my first ever Dole Whip:

P1060125.jpg

The sky goes dark within about eight seconds, and down comes the first rain I've ever witnessed at WDW (seriously!).

P1060126.jpg

And it kept on pouring. Torrentially. For much longer than it took me to finish the Dole Whip. For much longer even than I could make fun of all the poor wet people sprinting by – so in the end we ran for it, dismally failed to run faster than the rain, and were drenched to the bone. I might even have caught a bit of a cold from that. The Dole Whip was really nice, though. ;)

Back to WDW Day One, anyway:
After lunch and walking around Epcot for another couple of hours, we checked into our hotel, dumped our eight dozen suitcases on the floor, decided not to unpack until the next day and headed for dinner. That was only a brief walk away at …

P1040526.jpg

On our visit last year, we had had to wait for our table for almost 40 minutes as they were somewhat behind schedule, so this time we were a bit anxious that we’d have to wait as long again. We were in luck, however – we were seated within minutes (and obviously I took that as my cue to start staring at the ceiling and taking blurry pictures).

P1040531.jpg

Our dining experience started with the bread basket, and as usual I don’t remember what exactly was in there … All I remember is I liked it. :)

P1040534.jpg

I especially wonder what that is on the butter and olive oil – should have been sea salt, but it’s red?? I don’t actually have a clue – back to dining reporters' academy … :confused3

This was my yummy-looking appetizer:

P1040535.jpg

The Tomato and Buffalo Mozzarella with Heirloom Tomatoes, Basil, Garlic, Warm Focaccia, and Aged Balsamico.
These tomatoes were a bit better than those I had on the ship, but still lacking in taste. Is this a universal phenomenon – do you Americans also have tomatoes that look glorious and evoke memories of wonderful taste experiences, but once you actually eat them they are just bland and watery? If so, welcome to my world. :sad2:

DH gave this a try:

P1040536.jpg

The Caesar Salad consisting of Crisp Romaine Lettuce, Aged Parmesan, and Ciabatta Crouton.
I don’t know if this is another cultural difference (we experienced something similar on our last trip with a steak salad), but we were amazed at how this was presented: a few huge leaves and a slice of bread, where we would rather have expected something chopped with small croutons. But maybe this is some grandiose form of art, and I am just not getting it? If so, please ignore the ignorance :rolleyes1.

Neither of us had to think long about which entrée to choose, by the way:

P1040537.jpg

We each went for the Yachtsman Filet Mignon, an 8-oz Filet with Mashed Potatoes and Red Wine Sauce.
The Yachtsman being a steakhouse, they serve several different filet and steak dishes varying in size from an 8-oz to a whopping 24-oz serving – and while we both love our steak, there is no way we could eat anything that large and still also enjoy an appetizer AND dessert AND the rest of the evening without stomach cramps.

So anyway, almost needless to say, we both loved this steak. I was perfectly happy with my choice also because I am addicted to American mashed potatoes. They are heavenly. I don’t know why they are so much better than when I order them at home, the only visible difference being that in the States (erm, I mean at WDW since what do I know of the States otherwise :rolleyes1) they mash in a bit of the skins.
But I kid you not when I say that about six months prior to this WDW trip I started raving to DH about “I’m so excited honey we’re going to Disney World again!!! The Magic Kingdom, Mickey Mouse, mashed potatoes!!!”
(Er, sorry, I mean Mashed Potatoes of course.)

Oh, and did I mention that they do the same with the french fries, as in there are bits of potato skins at the end? I love them!
(A little aside to all the Douglas Adams fans out there, may he rest in peace: It has just occurred to me that the answer to the question about life, the universe and everything could just as well have been “just don't peel the potatoes”.)

Anyway, little rave over and time for dessert: We couldn't find anything on the menu that appealed to us so I whined about it to our server (the things these poor people have to go through), and to this she suggested she simply bring us a bit of fresh fruit each. Wonderful idea!

P1040538.jpg

And what made it even better was the Jamaican Coffee I used to wash it all down – a mixture of Myers's Dark Rum, Tia Maria, and Coffee topped with Whipped Cream. Very nice. And it didn’t even leave me too drunk to stagger back to my room on my own two feet (this might have been aided by the fact that I only had a few hundred metres to go, of course).

So, to sum it all up – we waited less and enjoyed ourselves more than during our last visit, and we have nothing whatsoever to complain about.
I still don't think we will return here during our next trip if we really decide to pay out of pocket instead of using the Deluxe Dining Plan, though (no, this is not merely a running gag, we are seriously contemplating it. And stop laughing at me, I heard you!). After all, the prices are a bit steep if you pay cash instead of using credits.
I know it is like that in all of Disney’s signature restaurants, but I still think other Signatures lilke California Grill or Jiko give a more memorable experience justifying the high price. So, great restaurant - just maybe not for three trips in a row.

Coming up next: A time-honoured tradition – breakfast at The Crystal Palace!

When I saw that you posted a Yachtman's Steakhouse review I was rather anxious that I would be very sad that we crossed that restaurant from our ADR list for the October trip... But while your review was absolutely wonderful, it really did confirm our decision: It looks like a great place, but other places are more exciting for me. :goodvibes

I think this serving the whole leaves is supposed to be a very artistic presentation. I think I would be very tempted to ask wether it would be possible to get it served chopped up and tossed... I normally love it that in the US salads tend to be served tossed, not like here where they tend to just pour over the dressing. :confused3 And the large crouton - that happened to me in France as well once.

Sorry about the tasteless tomatoes - but what are these transparent thingies on tomato and cheese? The look like fish eggs!! :scared1:

Thanks for your Yachtsman review. We've been there a few times before and weren't crazy about it, but we decided to give it another chance next month. We're still going to go, but I hope the non-steak items will be okay!
