We got Covid on a Disney trip

I read the whole article. It is unbelievable to me that these people feel that they can create the rules to suit them but ask more of everyone else. I totally understand what she did and why (I'd do the same myself) but these public health folks darn well better make the public announcement that health goes beyond physical and includes mental/emotional well being. Instead they perpetuate climates of shame and then hate it when the shame reaches them. I wear masks, I use sanitizer, I have not seen anyone but two friends (masked, outdoors for walks) since March. My kids have been fully remote since march and my 14 year old has only seen one friend but taught herself how to paint, play piano and trumpet and thrived in her space. But even so, telling people with families in economic and health crises to avoid one another sounds good in theory but is not practical for anyone who doesn't have financial security or is experiencing personal crises. I truly understand all sides of this argument and have so much compassion for the multitudes of experiences people are having. It's nearly impossible to discuss on a disney forum because if you can afford Disney more than every several years, you're likely doing pretty well for yourselves in the world financially.

That is disgusting. IMHO a parent who does that should be told that their child is not welcome for in person learning for the remainder of the school year. Its all online when you knowingly endanger the lives of others.
It would be unethical to punish a minor for their parents actions and could lead to further issues with concealment of covid status with others in the school.

Sounds like you are both doing well so that's good. I'm not surprised given the amount of people you came in contact with before, during and after the actual Disney part. I'm surprised we don't hear of more cases since the bubble isn't really a bubble. We always come home from a WDW trip with some ailment or another, I'm thinking odds of getting sick are better than the odds of not getting sick when in such a large crowd of people. We came home in Jan. (me and my adult son) with some sort of mystery ailment. He was feeling bad the day we left for home, I started feeling bad two days after we got home. Both of us had fevers, coughing, aches. I was having a hard time breathing and figured I had walking pneumonia (which he confirmed since he is a RT). Lasted about 2 weeks for both of us, neither went to the doctor since we knew there wasn't anything they could do that we weren't already doing at home. Covid? Maybe who knows since it wasn't being talked about that early in the game.

I also had some mysterious ailment last January while at Disney. Had a fever, headaches and rigors which I had never experienced in my life before. Not having much of an appetite, I had a hearty chicken soup from Captain Cooks on a Saturday night which was delicious. Went back for the same thing the next night and thought it tasted like dishwater. I actually got up to get salt to add to my soup for the first time in my life. Ranted to my husband how unacceptable it was for Disney to not have better standards (at least a recipe to follow so that the food flavour is consistent). He looked at me and said, “I don’t know what you’re talking about. It tastes the same as yesterday”. When we started hearing about the symptom of loss of taste in April, I started to think that I may really have had it back in January. I have been wondering if I infected others. Sorry if you got this from me. I was there marathon weekend (not a runner).

At some point you have to just go out and do something. Otherwise you end up like Dr. Brix's parents who were locked down for 10 months and then went on hunger strike which caused Brix to violate her own command not to gather during Thanksgiving.

Some people are immunocompromised, or belong to another high-risk group, and don't have that option. For the rest of us, we shouldn't do it recklessly to avoid overwhelming our medical resources.

January feels really early unless you've been traveling between Asia or maybe Washington. Short-term dulling of smell/taste can occur with the regular flu. When I actually caught covid, I completely lost my sense of smell and taste for over a month.

I completely lost my smell in November of 2019 with no other symptoms. It lasted a long time and freaked me out. This was around the time a lot of people around me were getting really ill with "bronchitis" or as we were jokingly calling it at the time "the death cold".

Personally, I'm very skeptical of the Covid timeline as presented.

The time line is that it started in November in China and was passed along from that point on. So that matches up with the timeline.

Then there was a huge spread in January when all the Chinese workers and students came back from China from their holiday break.

Probably the biggest mistake made though was that the virus got in through the backdoor to Europe and the US through Italy. Alot of the Italian textile factories are owned by China and employ like 100,000 Chinese workers from Wuhan (which is the textile capital of China).

There are tons of articles from before 2019 talking about this:

Where are you based? It's a shame an antibody test would tell you nothing by now.

One of my coworkers got sick in January 2020 after a birthday trip to the Casino's in Kansas City. In hindsight, she thinks it might have been Covid, but has no way to prove or disprove that theory. She said it was the worst she has ever been sick in her life. She fainted and woke up to her hubby trying to dress her and take her to the hospital. She talked him out of it, but later, when she was more coherent, told him never to listen to her if she's that sick and go ahead and drag her to the hospital. She was out for just over a week and she's not one to milk a situation. If she's not super sick, she's as work.

Wife and I had a 6 night stay at poly 11/6 through 11/12. We both became symptomatic on 11/14 and tested positive on 11/16. There is a slight chance we may have had it before the trip but doubtful. This trip is the riskiest thing we've done since the start of the pandemic. We followed the rules, tried not to touch railings and anything else that people touch often. The places we didn't feel comfortable were the plane rides to and from and in the parks, (particularly in the mornings) in high traffic areas like Galaxy's Edge. Social distancing is impossible when there are many people all trying to be in the same place. We thought they did a good job in ride queues. Stay safe out there.

Did you guys do a rapid results test? or blood test... just curious?

I have heard too many credible reports of people having covid symptons in January 2020. Almost all the reports involved travel to a touristy destination, so I truly believe it was here in the US then.

There were non-confirmed cases of COVID in washington state as early as November of 2019. Meaning many folks there, where my parents live claim that the same sickness they were witnessing March was making the rounds earlier but there were no tests to confirm it. I also doubt the timeline as presented.

Also suspect I had it in January 2020 from marathon weekend. Symptoms three days after I got home. Lost taste/smell for two weeks(like, could not taste AT ALL), bad cough. Had flu shot in October 2019. Took me almost a month before I could run without coughing. I remember at the time sitting on the couch reading reports of people back from marathon weekend saying they came back sick too, some with diagnosed flu, so I assumed it was flu even though I had gotten the flu shot (since it’s not hundred percent.) Now I am thinking it’s definitely a possibility it was COVID. Guess I’ll never know for sure.

The blood test is an antibody test. That test is unnecessary to diagnose an acute infection. To find out if you currently have Covid, you’d get a rapid test (less accurate) or a PCR test (more accurate).

My friend and her daughter both had the flu last January despite getting the flu shot, I don’t think it was a very effective one.

You can be skeptical but they have actual genomic tracking on the virus which points it back to its origin.

Now could you have had a precursor that then mutated in to a more deadly disease in Wuhan area? Maybe who knows but some symptoms of similar nature I don't think is enough to connect the dots.

If what you had was actually an early variant of covid19 they would also likely have an unexplained genomic tree that could not be connected in. Similar to how they can track large mutations occurring out of SA and UK.

Nextstrain has been a good source since last January.

Just pointing out its not just a pure guess that people are throwing out there regarding origination and timeline. Always a tiny chance though I personally don't know enough.
