What kind of fabric should I get?

We are going back to Disney in 2011. I am pregnant with a little girl for just a few more weeks. She will just be too young to do autographs when we take her for the first time. It is killing me to not go back for that long! DS and I just keep trying to find reasons to go back sooner. :rotfl: Anyway, I thought it would be cute to make an autograph quilt! I read about it in the All Ears newsletter and it just stuck with me. But I haven't sewn in quite some time and am just now getting back into it. I have forgotten almost everything! What sort of fabric should I get to take with us? I figure if I start collecting it now it won't seem as expensive when we go. Plus I will have the stroller to haul it around in! I plan to cut the fabric in squares and put those in a hoop or on a clipboard for them to sign on. I will get permanent fabric pens right before the trip. After I get home I will piece it all together and quilt it. Does this sound reasonable? Any suggestions?

I am planning on making one for my DGD. I bought some white Kona cotton fabric to use for the siggies. It has a nice weight and texture to it.
Someone posted somewhere on this site not to use fabric pens as they are hard for the characters to write with so they suggested Sharpies.

Happy sewing and signature collecting. :goodvibes

Thanks for the advice about the Sharpies. Maybe I could just sew over the, sort of embroider over, the autographs. Think that would work?

Embroidering over the autographs sounds like a great idea. I would suggest that you use the sharpie rub-a-dub laundry marker, or if you stick with regular sharpies only use black. The colors are nice, but I have found some fade away and the black stays.

I know this has been awhile since anyone posted. I did this last Sept. My son got his autographs in his book and I did on my material. I used a 12x12 square that I had pre cut. with an embroidery hoop. It worked great. I had my squares in a large baggie and then when they were signed I put them in a different baggie. I used a material pen that will not wash off. The characters did not have a hard time signing. They thought it was cute...they must not get that very often. Alot of CM said something about it.
Now I am working on the quilt. I am cutting the squares smaller and adding other material. I will give this to my son for his birthday. When we went in Sept it was for his 11th birthday so this will be fun for him to get. Hope this helps someone.

Thank you so much for this post. It'll help me. I would love to see if I could make one on my own and what fabric I could use to make one so I have control over what it looks like from the beginning.

I did this several years ago. I used white 100% cotton and cut them into triangles. I used a clipboard with alligator clips on the sides and had two pieces of fabric ready to go for each character...I wanted two autographs intending to make two quilts but only put one together as a gift for my bff's b-day. I also used fabric markers and the characters had no problems with them. You have to be careful with sharpies on fabric because sometimes the colors bleed or blur.

The other fabrics I used were a variety of different Disney related that I found at different stores. I will try to find and upload a pic of the completed quilt.
