We are planning a late September trip, but have heard so much about the love bugs this time of year. When do they usually clear out for the year?

Living in Louisiana, I can tell you-love bugs SHOULD be gone by the end of September. They hit their peak in August, but tend to die out about the middle of September. We recently went to a festival here in Louisiana on September 20, and there were no bugs. You should be in the clear by the end of September.

:( We live in florida and beleive me,these little suckers have a mind of their own. According to the bug specialists, they are supposed to be gone by the end of september.{may and september are love bug months here in florida} But some times these little buggers hang around till the middle of october, and well into june also. So, if your going in the month of september, you can be guaranteed a love bug fest. sorry...

We were there in May and while we noticed them they did not "bug" us at all? We did not get bit and there weren't so many to be annoying. They were just there.

But then we are from Alaska and fond of saying the Giant Mosquito is the State Bird. Now those are annoying so maybe its all realatve...

 The love bugs don't bite at all, they are just annoying. Especially to the windshield of your car!

:( Glad you asked. Love bugs are these small flying insects that look a lot like lightening bugs {fireflys} They do not bite or sting, nor do they eat your plants. They just fly around, mostly two at a time thus the name love bugs because that is all they do, splatter on your windshield, die in big piles on your front {and back} porch and that is pretty much it. There are a lot of stories about where they came from. One of them is that the were developed in a lab to eat mosquitoes, and that did not work, and another story says that they were bought over from africa to study what their purpose was, and they got loose and it is all downhill from there!:(

:( They are annoying because they can fall into your drink, and their body acid is destructive to your cars finish. If you have to travel a long distance during love bug season, you have to stop and clean them off of your car or the paint could be damaged. You have to drive around down here during may or september to really appreciate why we hate them down here:(
