When is whale season?

Looking to go next year and stay in Dana Point. When is the best time for whale watching?

We've been out with them 3 times in August, different years. Great shows of blue whales, minke and lots of dolphins. In the past week or so there have been pilot whales and sperm whales spotted. Both rare to see.

Great website and they list what they've seen daily so you can get a good idea of times to go. They offer tours for half price on Tuesdays. Free parking. We also enjoyed a meal at the restaurant on the pier that overlooks the water.

Sorry, late finding this. I work for a whale-watching company just a bit south of Dana Point in San Diego. Late December through early May is gray whale season, but the peak is January, February, and March. Then May and June are a bit slow with potential sightings of blues, fin whales, and minke whales (and occasionally humpback whales too). Then as mentioned earlier, peak blue whale season is the summer (July, August, September). There are dolphins off the coast at anytime of year, however.
