Is anyone here a hospitality management major? I am considering attending UCF and their hospitality management program. Does anyone know what type of job/ beginnig salary a new grad can expect? I am currently an "older" non traditonal student and CM at WDW and am currently attending a community college for hospitality mamangement and am thinking of transfering to ucf for a BS instead of just an AS, which i am currently pursuing.

I am a Restaurant and Hotel Management Major at Auburn University in Alabama. I decided to go to Auburn to get in state tution and it was were my fiance was going (they have a good enigneering school here). The starting rate with what you make will actually vary greatly with whatever road you take. Since Hospitality covers everything from working in a state park, casinos, hotels, tour agencies, amusement parks, restaurants, cruise ships, event planners, wedding planners, owner of B&Bs there is endless career levels. What I do know (professors said) is if you get your BS and decide to work overseas you can make really good money with perks (a provided car with driver, bonuses, etc). Also working in a cruise ship you can make really good money but cruise ships require you to work 24/7 for long periods of time. My school owns a hotel The Auburn University Hotel that is run by the management company West Paces Hotel Group. A lot of the students here like to intern with them and get into management. If there is a particular company you are wanting to work for I would log onto their website and see if they have a program were they help pay for you to go to school, with a promise you will work for them when you graduate. Also if you have a particular company in mind you can looking on their websites and see what the average salary is.

I just graduated from James Madison University in VA, with a degree in Hospitality and Tourism Management. Our school is a little different because we are part of the business school, so we actually graduate with BBA's. I agree that there are a lot of job options for a hospitality major. I took the Disney route and did the College Program last spring in FSFB, and this June I am returning to Disney for a F&B Management Internship. My brother is also a hospitality major, graduated from JMU in 2008, and accepted a full time job with a country club. However, he recently decided that the hospitality hours were too much for him, so he switched jobs and surprisingly is now in sales. The company he works for said they like to hire hospitality majors due to their strong guest service and interpersonal skills. He is enjoying the sales hours a lot more. So, even though there are a ton of opportunities within hospitality alone, there are also other jobs/industries that you can cross over into. Good luck with your decision!

I could not agree more! I am not so good when it comes to math, so needless to say the economic and accounting courses did not help out with my gpa at all. Thank goodness I had other courses I enjoyed more to help balance them out. I guess in the long run though it is helpful to have that knowledge of business. Good luck with the courses, and have fun on your CP this fall! :goodvibes
