Why do Americans murder their bacon ?

Had breakfast out this morning for the first time since getting home

Had nothing to fancy just bacon and eggs on toast

How wonderful it was after 6 weeks in USA, to eat a piece of bacon cooked the way nature intended :)

Just lightly seared on each side in a frypan

Why do Americans insist on murdering their bacon by deep frying it ?, everywhere we went, bacon be it breakfast or burger was cooked in this way and it taste terrible, for a country that is so in love with good food, why kill the bacon ? It's much nicer done lightly in the frypan

Also we couldn't find any sushi with chicken in it, it was all fish, it's like they have never been exposed to a teriyaki chicken sushi roll or a crispy chicken sushi roll, why just fish ?

And why do breakfast buffets around the world never have
Crumpets, there is nothing better in the morning than a crumpet lashed with butter and honey, yet you never find crumpets at buffets, why ? They are way better than bagels

All I can say is if you don't like the food... don't eat here. I've heard that the food in England is God Awful. But they seem to like it. I like my bacon crisp. To each his own I say.

Ok nancy I meant no insult it was just a question

I was curious that this style of cooking bacon seemed to be the norm in USA, we didn't find anywhere that was cooking it correctly

To say don't eat here when visiting for more than a day could prove a little tricky ;)

When the bacon is deep fried it's destroyed, all the flavor and texture is ruined, yet it seems to be cooked like that everywhere

HappyFingers....look at it the other way.

The Americans think that they cook their bacon correctly and we (and the Brits) undercook our bacon. They don't understand why we eat raw bacon. In fact, some of my American Dis-friends say that our bacon is "kangaroo bacon" whenever I post of picture of breakfast with bacon in it.

Who's to say which way is correct? It's all a matter of personal and cultural taste.

But where bacon is concerned, it is also about the cut of bacon used.
  • Canadians use back bacon, which is the strip of meat from the back of the pig.
  • Australian use middle bacon, which includes the strip of meat from the side as well as some of the pork belly.
  • Americans use streaky bacon, which is what we call pork belly. It is more fatty than the back or middle sections.
When it comes to streaky bacon, I like mine cooked so that the fat renders and practically melts in my mouth. That is....meat crispy!

Personally, I'll eat bacon any way it comes!

I've heard that the food in England is God Awful.
I've heard that too, thank goodness we live in Australia. :lmao::rotfl2:

But I know what you mean Happyfingers. I personally don't eat the bacon in the US, because I do like the middle bacon that we use, I'm just not a fan of the cut they use. It isn't how it's cooked though, I murder the bacon we have here :rotfl: (but I murder it in the frypan, not the deep fryer). I always ask for burnt bacon here because I find when you ask for well done, they just don't get that I like all of the fat so well cooked, not all jelly and grosse. I love the little fillet we get here (and in the UK), but they don't cook it enough in the UK for me either.

mmmm, talking of bacon is making me hungry, I'm going to make lunch, I'm starving :lmao:

yeh but when i cook bacon here i dont eat the fat

that would be yuck, i just eat the nice tender meaty bits pirate:

anyway im a few days away from doing a juice fast :scared1:
check out the movie
"fat, sick and nearly dead"
its very interesting and inspired me

its about an aussie bloke who is sick with some skin disease and is taking heaps of pills every day, he goes to usa for 60 days and consumes nothing but fresh raw juice

i wont say any more in case you want to watch it, but it has a very heartwaming ending

i just purchased a neo 1000 juicer, gunna give it a crack :wizard:

I'm confused about the deep frying of bacon in the US??? I fry my bacon in a frying pan. I actually do prefer it a little undercooked compared to the way restaurants here make it. However, I have worked in a lot restaurants here and I have never ever seen or heard of any of them deep frying their bacon. So I'm thinking that is not the cause. I believe it is a different kind of cut and some restaurants even bake it on a cooking sheet in the oven before using it to top burgers. It is usually pretty well done but not deep fried at least not on the East Coast.

Okay... I was being a bit snarky. LOL. Sorry. I've never seen bacon deep fried. We just lay it in a pan and fry it. I like mine crisp not limp. To me THAT is correct. But again... to each his own.

For those not in Australia..

This is generally what the bacon looks like in Australia (this is raw, we don't eat it like this, LOL)

It has this big yummy lump of meat on it, so cooks up quite differently to the bacon in the US. That, I think is why it's so different for many Aussies, we are just not used to the way the US bacon is cooked and the cut used.

I'm not saying US bacon is bad :goodvibes, you can't beat crispy bacon... it's just different :thumbsup2.

ok maybe not deep fried but thats what it taste like

i feel like inviting a whole bunch of Americans to my joint so we can have a big bacon cook up and show them how bacon should taste and feel in your mouth :cool1:

ill show you the kangaroos and all :thumbsup2 thousands of the little rats :rotfl:

Because its much faster and easier when you have to make pounds and pounds of bacon to just throw it in the basket and drop it for 60 seconds than it is to lay out each piece on a grille...its all about time saved.

The bacon is definetly different. I cooked some in the US and it was super thin in the packet, way thinner than we buy here and it was all streaky. The kids prefer the bacon we cook at home, but I always still cook it crispy. I actually enjoy the USA bacon as I like to crunch my bacon. You cannot get bacon cooked properly in Australia.

The other thing I like about USA bacon is that I am in the USA eating it, that't the main drawcard :thumbsup2

Any bacon is good bacon for me! But I do prefer the 'Australian way', not cooked to a crisp and with more meat than fat! The number of times the roof of my mouth was cut from the bacon in our breakfasts on our last trip...

O.k i am totally confused:confused3. Why do the yanks call it turkey bacon? I thought that meant it was from a turkey not a pig? P.S I love the bacon in the states although I don't think it is as healthy as we cook it, but maybe thats why I like it! :goodvibes

They have turkey bacon too. It's made from turkey, processed, smoked and reshaped to look like pork bacon :confused3. It's supposed to be lower in fat than pork bacon. I've never seen it here, but wouldn't mind tasting it to see what it's like. I love turkey, so I think I may like turkey bacon :rotfl:
