I was in Panamá last october, just to visit the Miraflores Locks visitor center, and was surprised to learn that when there was the California gold rush, lots of people from the East coast in the US would travel by ship to Panamá, cross Panamá by train (just before they built the Canal) and then embark again on the other side and get to San Francisco.

I had no idea about this and found it a very interesting fact, I though everyone traveled to the West by land. Since this is part of the US history, do they teach this fact in school? Because here we were taught about the 13 Colonies, and their Independence, but that´s about it.

For those who homeschool, the official website, www.pancanal.com has a link for children where they explain how the locks work and how the ships go 26 meters over sea level to cross, and how they are lowered again.

I knew I knew, read it in a romance novel,:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: .

Come one, come all, who walk or crawl, to the Ship of Thieves WB Repo roll call. We have added some more plunderers to our list and they appear to be ship shape and raring to go with the rest of us scurvy pirates!pirate:

This is the winner of our logo vote:
:cheer2: :cheer2:

I have all the logos on my computer so if you really need them send me a PM.

The page one updates have info on shipping your stuff to the ship and a link to Brusilly's really nice and really cool pic's from his last Panama cruise! Thanks Brusilly!!!! :cheer2:

Summary:

In the last 24 hours we have decided that:

If you are going to be part of the DOD club, 2 drinks is the minimum, there is no maximum. Disignated walkers are being assinged to the DOD club members to ensure they will make it back to their cabins and avoid unplanned and/or unwarranted pajama parties!

There are a whole lot of Lauras, Loris, and Lisas on this cruise. Shouting one of these names at anytime will result in multiple people looking at you to see what you want.

Brusilly knows where to get the biggest martini's made on the ship!

Life is too short to not take your kids out of school and on vacation as a family. Appreciate your loved ones and give them lots of hugs and love.

We play much nicer than some people on another board doing the opposite cruise of us.

Dismeets are being planned all over the place. If you are an organizer, PM me so I can add you to the page 1 info.

If you can't find something that you thought was important, check page 1 for links!

How'd I do?????:laundy:

Laura,

You did great!

OK...I don't watch sports, didn't even know the Superbowl was today until a few days ago, but stopped to watch the halftime show....BUT, who in the world decided Prince would be a good halftime show? I wouldn't think the younger crowd would even know who he is! Or am I so behind the times that Prince has made a comeback? Don't get me wrong, I loved him back in the days of Purple Rain, but am just sort of surprised people still want to hear him sing those old songs. Or maybe I'm just being grouchy and I'm sorry for offending anybody who is a big Prince fan. ;)

No chance of a "wardrobe malfunction" I guess.

Real Men DON'T wear Crocs . . .!

(Well, maybe Croc flip-flops, but NOT with PINK!)

Well, don't tell my DH. He would NEVER be caught wearing the classic Croc style, but finally relented and let me order the flops (black and red) after trying MINE on. (The only pink he'd wear is if DD made/bought it for him. You should see him after she plays hairdresser with the hairclips!)

Holly...How did the date with the hair dryer go??

Carolyn

Oh boy....I could say so many things! It was a "hot" date! But seriously, stopped and bought a hair dryer and big flashlight on the way home, found a long extension cord, got a big piece of cardboard out of the garage so I didn't have to lay on the snowy ground while crawling through the opening, AND couldn't get the tiny door to the crawlspace open. :headache: I couldn't tell if it was frozen or if I just don't know how to open it, but I got frustrated and just went inside and called a plumber. They have a huge list of houses waiting for them to come thaw pipes and have bought an extra pipe thawing machine to help keep up with demand. Didn't know such a machine existed. In the meantime, the plumber's office told me to crank my heat up higher and open my cabinets so the warm air can get in and that sometimes helps. Not sure, but after having the heat cranked up for an hour, water started flowing from the faucet in the bathtub! WOOHOO! Now I'm still hoping the one in the kitchen sink will do the same. Otherwise the plumber will be coming to thaw only the cold water going to the kitchen sink. My homeowner's insurance will only cover the cost if the pipes actually burst.

So now I'm paranoid because it's supposed to get down to 9 below tonight with wind chills 20-30 below, so I've been turning on all the faucets every half hour and will leave them running a little when I go to bed.

My dad grew up in Grand Rapids and I told him what happened. He said to:
Leave the fawcets running a little on all taps so they do not freeze. And this spring, get under your house and see if your pipes are wrapped. If not, get them done in the spring, because it is too dang hot in the summer to do it! He also recommended that you turn off and drain your sprinklers and hoses. If we were not so far away, I would just send him over there to nag..errr. I mean help you!
:lmao: :lmao:

Thanks! Between you and Tony, I am sure that I am getting the best advise.

Well, then we will probably fly from LAX unless you both recommend against it since we will probably stay a couple of days at Disneyland.
Well...that changes everything. If you can fly out of Santa Ana (john wayne airport) that would be closer than LAX. The drive from DL to SNA is not bad either. They have shuttles.

Psst - one more...the martini comment! ;)

Brisully I am sorry!! But hey, at least I consistantly spelled you name wrong. However, I did get it right the first time on the page 1 stuff. You may spank me now!!!

Just popping to say "hi". I've been trying to read this thread, but already having a hard time keeping caught up. After I catch up, I'm too tired to post. I'm hoping that I even though I don't have the time to post on a regular basis, I can still be part of the group. Still bummed about how 1/31 went and having a "guarantee" Cat 9.

I noticed several No. Cal. Thieves mention scrapbooking past cruises before leaving for this one. How about a "mini scrapbook meets"???

I'll be ready for a mini meet after our cruise this summer! I'm down with it. If we get enough people interested we could do it at the school I work at in Walnut Creek. We have plenty of room. Keep it in mind.
