Stand up proudly if you own less than 100 points!

I feel bad for all the people who don't own huge amounts of points, like some people do. Although we own more than 100 points, we sold a 25 point contract to someone for whom it was their first DVC contract. They wanted to start small (and they sure did!), then add on in the future. I often think about them and wonder how it all worked out. They were so happy to find a 25 point contract at the resort they wanted. So who else has started modestly?

Hey simba --great thread
I'm still in the research and plan to buy stage but this is how the last month has gone.

I originally thought I'd buy a 25 point contract and go every 3 years,,,well then I thought wait a minute your never going to be happy with every three years so what about every two years--ok now we are up to 50 points . Then I thought about a small piece of property that I own (was going to build on it one day but
have decided to sell it.) I just signed the real estate papers Fri. Soooooooo I thought well maybe a small 75 point contract would get me a few day each year. THEN I downloaded Caskbill's point program :scared1: -----(which by the way is a fantastic tool.) Computer analyst son says the program rocks. :thumbsup2 Anyhow as of today I think a small 100 point contract would be good but yah never know,,,maybe 120 .I have about 10-15 years till retirement and that's alot of time to be addding on ,,,I want to go slow and make sure I'm not loosing points (I know as if that would happen ) but I'm not much of a risk taker.
hugs Mel

I couldn't wait to jump on the AP discount. Since then I've gone over 100 points as well. I added on 50 points at BWV, then 2 25 point add-ons at BCV and most recently a 25 point add-on at AKV.

My plan is to get to 200 points and then start rotating out the resorts that aren't my favorites/expire the soonest.

I feel worse for those who don't own any at all!! :sad2:

Really, I tend to feel good for all DVC owners regardless of point totals. Some own very small contracts....it's no different from people owning small houses, older cars, etc. Some people can't afford the luxury of a lot of nice things, and I always feel good about those who are able to at least enjoy some of the Disney experience. I always hope that some day they will purchase additional points if they want to and their life circumstances allow. :thumbsup2

The 25-pointers etc. have a great deal now... Since the Diz now charges the closing costs etc for new purchases, buying a small contract then adding on will save 'em a boatload in the end. What a great time to be a DVCer!

:thumbsup2

The small contract will get them the same studio others with more points might book. The difference is just the amount of time spent(and probably size of villa). Once they walk out the door of their room, the small contract owners get to enjoy the same facilities as everyone else, so life is fair!

I don't disagree with that at all. I knew I hadn't worded my feelings well, and probably used a poor analogy. I think you sum it up much better. Thank you. :)

I have 50 and hoped it would do me for a few years. I want to add on two other resorts and maybe eventually have 100 at all three of my homes. When I go in May, I want to talk to a guide about adding on. I'm not sure if I have to be in Florida for this now that I'm a member or can add on from Nebraska. I could only buy resale here. I'm just excited to finally be a member, small or not. :cool1:

You can add on anywhere - even from Nebraska! :rotfl: They'll send you all the paperwork necessary. Believe me, the Diz will take your money wherever you are! SSR and AKV are on the block now ... but lots of resales small and large for the sold out units, like BWV, etc.

Actually, I didn't really word that right, but I didn't know how else to put it. What I meant was that I felt bad for how they felt about having "only" [however many]points and feeling the need to apologize for it. But I confess that when I read it, it sounded like I felt bad that they owned "such few" points, which isn't what I meant. Does that make any sense?

Hi all!!

This is my first post ( I sure hope I'm doing it right). DW and I are waiting for the ROFR from Disney to pass on a 53 Point contract at SSR :surfweb: ( kind of an odd number but we think it gives the contract character). Our primary purpose in purchasing is to vacation with our daughter, son-in-law and 3 granddaughters at Disney every other year :dance3: . We want to " pay our way" by using by using 103 points ( two years :teacher: ) to help offset the points needed for a one week vacation. We have been lifelong Disney addicts and have stayed at a wide range of hotels in and around Disney. The DVC resorts are special:tinker:

lumiere13: You did great. Welcome to the Dis and Good Luck with the contract!! ;) I think it is great to have a piece of DVC no matter how many points. Even 5 weeknights in a studio once a year would be better than not getting to Disney at all IMHO.

I own a 50 point contract at HHI that I've stretched into 3 trips since I bought in Feb of 2006. It had 34 banked points, which helped, but so far we've done 2 short trips to WDW in studios, and have a week-long trip to HHI (1 BR) planned for this August (4 nights on points, 2 cash). If we get spoiled by the 1 BR, I may be looking at an add-on! After the HHI trip, the well is dry for a couple of years, since I borrowed all the 2008 points!

:sad1: ummm, I think some of the comments here seem a little negative- I don't think anyone means to be interpreted that way, but thats how I am reading this. My point of view:

Please dont "feel bad" for us.:flower3:
I think it is really quite a luxury for people to go to a wonderful place like Disney World, (or Hilton Head or Vero Beach) at all, let alone every year or two or three. Everyone has different circumstances and situations, and to be completely honest- there are a lot of people out there who simply don't NEED 150+ points. :wave2:
For example, DH and I are celebrating our first anniversary this month, (yay!) We have no children and our jobs require us to vacation during the "slow" times of year. DH works for a major hotel chain where we get a substantial discount on accomodations anywhere in the US and in some cities overseas as well. DH entire family lives in Eastern Europe so we plan on visiting them every other year in the near future.
It would be INSANE for us to purchase 150 points because we would never use them all. We bought a 40pt contract which will be perfect for our vacation needs for the next three years at least. We plan on doing a small add on at AKV in that time to cover us when we will need larger accomodations. :dance3:
Our small contract is exactly right for us. I'm sure the people who purchased small contracts did it because it made sense for them, otherwise it would be a waste of money. :crazy2:
Don't "feel bad" for us.
Feel bad for people who are homeless, or hungry and have sincere hardship.

I'm waiting on a 25 pt contract to clear through Disney... so wish me luck there. but I have been worried a bit how some might think of me as "not really" a DVC member. I have dreamed about joining DVC for 7+ years, since they were building VWL. I could never afford it. But still we go to Disney every year. Finally, after reading the forums here, I figured I could start small and add maybe 25 pts every year or so, with a goal of about 75 or so. Right now with 25 it will get me 3 nights at a studio in OKW and then we are planning on either WL or POR afterwards, to make a full week.

Be careful! It is addictive (adding more, more)!
We started out this last August with a 70 pt resale at BCV. A few months later added an additional 50 at WLV (Chirstmas, you know)! And then bought 100 pts at AKV last month, thought about it for a week, and added 30 more pts at AKV.
From 70 to 250 points in 6 months and we haven't even used them yet.
My husband has officially cut me off. But I have a strategy for adding on CRV...
:thumbsup2

I can beat that track record. We bought 150 BWV points a year ago. Then we added 180 VWL points a month later. Last month we added 200 AKV points. I see a trend...
