Underwater/waterproof cameras, cases and housings

We are expecting an announcement ANY DAY now from Canon announcing the replacement for the D10. It's a good camera but dead product at this point. I would wait a few more days and watch www.canonrumors.com if I were you. The name implies it's a rumors site but it tends to be spot-on on virtually anything Canon and they are very honest when they do get something wrong. They're sources are unbelievable

Thanks for the information! Any guess as to when the replacement would be available for purchase after the announcement is made? Do they tend to get them in stores asap? I'm getting a waterproof for DH's b/day and I've got to have it researched and purchased by July 10th. Right now, today, I'm leaning towards the Optio W90 or Lumix DMC-TS2. That said, if the D10 wasn't turquoise, I'd be buying that one. Hopefully the new model will be out soon, and a little less blue. :-)

If they had a date, I'm sure they'd post it. They're making it sound like it's inevitable; like within the next 30 days or so. Canon doesn't usually announce anything until they are ready to ship (USUALLY). Having said that, you have a tight timeline in the scheme of waiting for a new introduction given we don't exactly know when. One thing is for sure, you can wait right up until the last possible moment before pulling the trigger on something else.

You do know there is an accessory kit for the D10 that changes the color plates, right? It's spendy but I think there are four plates in the kit. AFAIK, it's only available from Canon. It's not listed on the accessories page on the camera page as that page is sort of generic for all Canon stills (sigh). I have seen the add-on kit on eBay though and I'm sure it's probably on Amazon.

EDIT: It actually is on the accessory page at Canon but there's not a very good picture of it. EndEdit

we just got this fuji one
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/FUJIFIL...218170914648&skuId=9772659&st=fuji&cp=1&lp=13

So to test it my husband was in a dunk tank yesterday, he took a video while he was in it and got dunked, :lmao: then he set it down and it fell of into the wet dirt, it then got dirt ALL through it and I thought great! guess it's not sand proof but... he dunked it in a bowl of water for a little while last night and voila it's like new! LOL They should name this one husband proof!:rotfl:

Olympus Stylus 410 Digital is a good one.
If you're an outdoorsy snapshot photographer, and you hate to fuss with camera controls, put the Stylus 410 on your list.

We have an Olympus tough 8000, 12 megapixal, which we're pretty happy with. Sorry can't post any pics as I'm on my pda right now. Oh, just bought, quite cheaply, a waterproof housing for my dslr, by hama, about £72. Can't wait to use that this summer!

So we are doing Disney waterparks this year for the first time. I would love to ahve a camera that is waterproof. Any recomendations? I want a little one since I will still have to handle 3 kiddos!

I recommend the Canon PowerShot D10 and Fujifilm FinePix Z33WP.
I'm very impressed with D10.

I like that the D10 takes an SD card, that is the only memory card my cameras take. So I would like to stay with SD cards if I can. I was looking at the fuji, but didn't know about it.

K, just saw that the fuji takes an SD also. Oh, the decisions. Anyone know how the Fuji is. Imlike the price of it, since it's just for water use for me.

My wife just ordered the Fuji Finepix XP10 from Costco. It was $40 off right now so it was only $152 with free shipping and a 4GB SD card. It will arrive on Wednesday. I will let you know how it is at that time, but the price seems great if it works well.

Well it arrived today about the same time as the thunderstorms so it looks like it will not get a pool test till tomorrow.

There's quite a selection out there - all are pretty good, some slightly better than others, but not much between them considering they're all compact cameras. Assuming the depth rating isn't too big a factor (most handle 9 feet or so, some are a little shallower, some deeper). They're not made for diving - more for splashing, snorkeling, pool duty, or rain.

Don't worry too much about cards - virtually all brands, if not all, take SD nowadays.

Ones to consider - sticking with fairly large brands:

Fuji Z33 & Casio EX-G1 - the cheapest ones...basic, waterproof.
Fuji XP10, Pentax Optio WS80, Olympus Tough 3000 - slightly better, slightly pricier.
Pentax W90, Olympus Tough 6020 & 8010, Panasonic TS1 - All nicer, slightly more pricey, better built and strong cased compacts
Canon D10 - good performer, much bulkier, built to go deeper - if you don't mind the bigger, fatter camera, a good option
Sony TX5 - the slimmest and smallest of the waterproof/shockproof cams, mid-range protection and waterproofness, best at low light, a little pricey - if you want the slimmest and smallest

You won't go terribly wrong with any of them, just don't expect DSLR performance from any. The Canon & Panasonic have been well reviewed in the past, though many of the cameras above weren't around when the last large review of WP cameras happened. The Sony has some of the most innovations, and is the smallest. The Pentax W90 has some nifty macro ability and closeup with lights right around the lens ring. Olympus and Pentax have made waterproof compacts longer than the others - maybe experience helps. Lots and lots to decide!

I have the Kodak Play Sport. Its cheap, takes reasonable photos and shoots 1080P video all underwater... Hard to beat.

I bought my husband the Fuji Fine Pix XP10 for Father's Day. I played with it before giving it to him and used it again today after he opened it.

Here's some pictures I took with it

PHOTOS

Here's a short clip where I just wanted to test the video going from above water to below

VIDEO CLIP 1

And here's one I took standing in the pool. There is a slight blur to this video but it's not from the camera, it happened in the upload to youtube

VIDEO CLIP 2

And here's one more set of clips. The first 2 were shot today at our local water park. Sort of a bright but overcast day. They were shot by my husband who has never owned a camera in his life, and it shows. But he'll learn. LOL The 3rd little clip in here was one of the first I did in the pool the day I was doing test shots and clips.

I LOVE this camera and it was reasonably priced.

I also like the XP10, I had the opportunity to play with it on Saturday for a bit. My one complaint is that the battery/memory card compartment is too easy to open. I gave it to my DD3 while she was sitting on the steps of the pool and she started to play with the release. I wish there was a 2 step process that would make it a bit more child proof.

I am quite pleased with the picture quality. My standards were quite low as I was not expecting much with a waterproof camera. To my suprise the test shots turned out well. I would say it was well worth $140 my wife paid at Costco.

That's not a bad price, I haven't found it for that price. I will keep looking, thanks!

Well, as expected all underwater shots required WB adjustments. As you would expect there was a blue color cast on all the images. I was hoping considering that the FujiFilm FinePix XP10 was sold as a waterproof camera it would have a better auto white balance for underwater shots. Oh well, it was a quick fix in LR3.

That is great!
