Maleficent, Darling, Simply Maleficent

Maleficent has always been my favorite Disney character for as long as I can remember. I love sleeping beauty. I even walked down the aisle to the theme song from Sleeping Beauty. I am so excited about this movie. I even got this awesome shirt of etsy that says "keep calm and prick your finger" :lmao: I have 2 boys and 1 girl. We are all excited to see it. My mom and mother in law are going with us too. Angelina is one of my fav celebrities too, I think she is going to be amazing. Love the extra cheek bone implants / enhancements she has for the role to make her look even more like the animated version. We are excited!!:cheer2::cheer2::cheer2:

Disney was wise to hold off on the holiday weekend box office and not put this film up against X-Men, I suppose.

Yes, I think this is true. As much as I love Maleficent and hope it is a hit, it was wise not to go head to head with X-men with both new and old casts.

Right now the tomato meter is just above 50%. A number of reviews are very positive but some complain about the visuals. You know how critics are one critic hates it for the visuals but loves the story. Another critic says the story is awful but they love the visuals.

But the consensus seems to be that Jolie is awesome and the visuals are amazing. Many like the story, some say it is uneven. There are several who think it is absolutely awesome all the way around. I've read enough about the story to know I will like it.

I'm going tomorrow evening at 7:00 and will give a review.

I will tell you now how the movie ends: The credits go by. :lmao::duck:

What I am really anxious to see is how it does this weekend. Anything over 50 million is good, anything over 70 million is great. It is predicted to get around 60 mil.

Saw the screening in San Francisco last night, I definitely enjoyed this take on the story. My favorite part was not actually part of the film, they had technical difficulties and the sound wasn't working properly from the start. The audience had fun with it and people were creating their own dialogue, kinda like an episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000.

That's hilarious! :rotfl2:

We bought tickets for the IMAX 3D showing tomorrow at 9am. (Me, husband, and 13 & 16 year old sons.) I chose that showing over today's because the theater is supposedly giving away limited edition pins to Friday moviegoers.

I might be in the minority here, but I adore Jolie.

I saw the film this morning. We thought it was great. Not too scary for my 5 and 3 year old either. I loved the twist on the typical sleeping beauty story and thought that Angelina was amazing as Maleficent. The only real similarity with the original Disney version is the christening scene. The rest is very different. Not sure about some of the dodgy accents though :-/

Agreed! Saw it this evening. I absolutely loved it! So did my wife, and she is a tough sell on movies. The story and its twists were wonderful. I read that Angelina and Elle really hit it off and you could tell when they worked together. Angie was magnificent. It wasn't too scary and it was pure Disney. The creatures and characters were great. And Jolie communicated so much with a look and made the movie work. She's a fine actress. And Vivienne Jolie-Pitt is adorable!

The score by James Newton Howard was very good also.

If there was one flaw - and it was a very minor one - it could have been a little longer and fleshed out the story just a little, maybe 10 minutes. But I cannot complain too much because most directors overstay their welcome.

I loved the morals but cannot say too much about them without spoiling the movie.

SPOILER ALERT... SPOILER ALERT......................................................
Well it is kind of an indirect spoiler alert: Two main characters both choose evil. One is eaten from the inside with guilt and greed and hatred, and is consumed. The other is influenced by love, and experiences regret, and then exhibits true repentance!! What a change. And innocent love is the catalyst.

Kudos Disney! Another movie with depth.

If Gene and Roger were here, they would go: :thumbsup2:thumbsup2

Now I'm going back to see it in 3D!

I just watched it at the first show at my local theater. I enjoyed the story much more than I expected, and the visuals were pretty spectacular.

I hope Disney plans to do more movies like this in the future.

I definitely give it a thumbs up. Right now, I'm debating whether to go back for the midnight show.

Glad you liked it, I'm going several more times to see it. I also hope Disney does more in two ways: Backstory retellings of villains, and live action twists on animated films.

My husband and I saw the movie last night and we both had the same feeling. It was a good movie but it wasn't a great movie. Angelina Jolie was amazing and gave so much life to the character; however, the other characters were just kind of background characters. They were all very one-dimensional.

When I was at Disney last week, I bought the Maleficent book. I really hope that they expand on the story! I would have loved a longer movie.

Yes, longer would have been better. Here is the best review I've read. It is from Roger Ebert.com and it gives a thumbs up.

The review lays out all the flaws, says it is good movie anyway. Then it says go see it before reading further. After the break, for those who have seen the movie he explicitly explains why this movie is important, particularly for girls, and will resonate in a way that Frozen did. I agree completely agree.

Saw the movie in IMAX 3D this morning and loved it!

Such a neat twist on the original. I agree that it could've been a bit longer. It felt like the ending was rushed. Aside from that, I thoroughly enjoyed it and plan to add it to my Disney library.

I took my kids to see it last night and we all loved it. Exceeded my expectations. It was wonderful. Angelina was amazing and the visuals were breathtaking. 6 thumbs up from from our clan :)

Here is a good "Parents Guide" on the appropriateness of the movie for different ages. Basically it is not as scary as the trailers implied. Although it does have its moments. The article says the 3D is worth it for the beautiful fairy lands, the movie isn't boring for adults, has some good morals, and even points out their is a good place to run the kiddies to the bathroom at 45 minutes in. :P

A good review with some really good lines:
http://www.disboards.com/newreply.php?do=newreply&noquote=1&p=51549264
"The entire time I was watching it, I wished my 8-year-old was by my side, and that doesn’t happen often in this age of bombastic, overlong, mayhem-laden kids’ entertainments."

"Most of all, though, Maleficent has Angelina Jolie, the only actress who could make zooming above the clouds on 5-foot wings seem like something she just casually fits in between serving as a U.N. goodwill ambassador and raising six children with Brad Pitt."

An interesting article in US News about the symbolic rape aspect of Sleeping Beauty. (Some of the earliest versions have the prince raping a nude sleeping beauty in the forest!) And how this movie deals with the subject rather well.
