The ABCs of Another Steppe Into Adventure!- Last Africa Ch. + World Showcase Pt. 2

Well, I've not seen many other places around WDW that have accessories that look like glass but aren't. :)

Good point.

Yes, I've done that too with the aperature/focal length. At least I think that's what it's called. Like I've said before, I really need to take a class on photog.

Yes, aperture. Small aperture means it takes more time for the light to expose the sensor... hence, more depth of field. Larger aperture, less time, less depth = blurry background.

I will take an ice cream martini as an apology. ;)

Ok. I won't be there when you are, so go ahead and have one on me and send me the bill.

Not really.

:( I'm really sorry to hear that. Hope it starts getting better soon.

But I'm surviving and taking one day at a time. Thank you for your kind words and support. :)

:) You're very welcome.

Wait! Now you're grouping me with the riff-raff too? Unbelievable!

Well....

Yes.

I've been in there a time or two. :drinking1

Liesa tequila!

Sad really. Such a poor representation of the country's wonderful goods!!!

I know. They should hire me!

You. Did. Not!

:rotfl2::rotfl::lmao:

When I first read that I about died laughing. You like to flirt with the edge, don't you? :lmao::lmao::lmao:

Sorry. No idea what you could be referring to.
Nope.
None.
At all.

"took this famous painting"?? How do you do that? Sorry, confused!

Whoops! Went back and corrected. Took the photo.

I am!!! Can you share it?

Well, according to the tale, Churchill wasn't thrilled to have his photo done, (apparently, based on the documentary I watched of him, he wasn't thrilled with any portraits.)
Karsh wasn't getting what he wanted, so he went up and plucked Churchill's cigar right out of his mouth. Churchill was not happy. The result was that famous scowl in the photo.
You look at that and you can just feel that this is a man not to be trifled with. Great propaganda during WWII.

Here's a direct quote from Karsh:

"He was in no mood for portraiture and two minutes were all that he would allow me as he passed from the House of Commons chamber to an anteroom. Two niggardly minutes in which I must try to put on film a man who had already written or inspired a library of books, baffled all his biographers, filled the world with his fame, and me, on this occasion, with dread.

Churchill’s cigar was ever present. I held out an ashtray, but he would not dispose of it. I went back to my camera and made sure that everything was all right technically. I waited; he continued to chomp vigorously at his cigar. I waited. Then I stepped toward him and, without premeditation, but ever so respectfully, I said, “Forgive me, sir,” and plucked the cigar out of his mouth. By the time I got back to my camera, he looked so belligerent he could have devoured me. It was at that instant that I took the photograph."

How awesome is that?!?!?

So, I saunter up to the queue/ entrance to the show and find a rope there. I am completely alone, with ZERO other guests around. And I wait, and wait. And wait. And wait. Must've been 5 minutes?? Seriously, the show is barely worth that long a wait if you've already seen it before, so thought, well, maybe they just can't see me? So I stepped over and walked into the covered show foyer area. Only to be snapped at by the CM, "Next time, don't step over the ropes; they are there for a reason!".

I grumbled under my breath as I left <Then next time, do you your job>

I was not amused.

You're lucky you didn't get your knuckles rapped.

A solid 5. The show is okay, Le Cellier is pretty darn good and it is picturesque, but it could use a bit.. more and certainly some better shopping!!! Also, no worthwhile enterrtainment option. Off kilter was good and, like Mo'Rockin', there was no reason to give them the snowshoe.

Not bad. I rated it a 4. I like the show well enough. Le Cellier is good. The garden is nice enough as is the waterfall. But.... I live there, so... Ain't nuttin' new to me!

Ice cream's pretty fantastic, no?

Well... sure. But if the other part of that equation is just gin... then I'll skip the gin and go straight for the ice cream.

I've been to Paris. Twice. Was far less than impressed with the rude people. I"m sure the countryside outside of the city is lovely and all, but so is Italy and Germany. I'll spend my $$ there, thanks.

Interesting. My experience there was very different.

Nope, but chickens can be heard.

Ah!

haven't met a man yet that hasn't taken more than a passing glance at the belly dancers.

Not me!

Because I've never seen the belly dancers there.

:rolleyes1

No, a coin purse. Dug it out and put it in my purse after I posted that thinking it was a shame to not be using it.

Oh! Had no idea.

The Showcase O'Meter says.... a 7. But this one is far too subjective. I don't LOVE the drummers, although I do stop and watch at least a little if they are performing while I'm passing. The shopping of course if top notch, but, the dining is ho hum to me. Practically EVERY major town in N. America has a hibachi place where chefs toss food around, and the CS place there was awful when I tried it last. I do hear there is a signature dining place coming and I'd be VERY interested in trying that out, and the overall feel and gardens are lovely. Just my opinion, so please take with a grain of salt.

Yes, we have a Teppanyaki restaurant here too. But... just something about the way Disney does it makes it better, IMHO. Never tried the CS place. And was very underwhelmed by the shave ice. But I like the drummers (although I've heard them enough now that I could easily give them a miss next time) and love the relaxing, zen feel of the garden. And like poking around the gift store at all the strange and wonderful paraphernalia. :)

My least fave. A 3?? VOL is it's only true saving grace.

Never heard them... but want to. I wouldn't mind seeing the show too, been a looooooong time since I last saw it. But... it's a time sucker, so... may not anyways.

10516695_843637408981864_6855036166007661795_n.jpg

Won't quote all the photos, of course.
But... wow! You certainly are very talented! You sewed all those? Or just your own? (i.e., I assume those are your daughters with you. You sewed theirs too?)

I like how Disney is less focused on Princess meets Prince and they live happily ever after and more on other storylines. This one was very well done with a new setting and out of the box characters. Music was great too!

Good point! I hadn't thought of that aspect. Just that I enjoyed the movie. :)

With some last minute things to finish up, we’d be on our way home by evening.

Or would we?

This sounds ominous...

First, they had cooked up a little “awards”/appreciation ceremony for us at the office so headed off in that direction. As usual, we crawled at the pace of a 3-legged turtle all the way there. Yes, in fact, I was clock-watching. As my anxiety mounted, they presented us with some very sweet words of thankfulness for our work and a momento to take home (as if the cherished memories of our time there wasn’t enough!). They gave us a toast of grape juice (deferring to the Islamic staff members) and invited us to come back any time. Who knows what the future holds….

This is so lovely of them, but yes...I'd be stressed.

“We’re sorry, they are all busy right now.”

“Yes, we realize that, but we have many thousands of $$ of stuff to give you.”

“Please wait here in the hot sun for an hour. We’ll be right with you.”

“Oh sure! We’ll be back…. Never.”

Oh my goodness. That. Is. Wild. After all the work and money you put in to provide them with supplies.

We did wait that hour. In the hot sun. Only to receive an incredibly lukewarm, bordering on rude welcome. No, they will never get another shipment from us. They knew we were coming for weeks, and really had no legit reason to receive us with ungrateful attitudes.

I can not get over this...

I know what you did for them will still help many people, and that's reward enough. But their blatantly rude treatment of you all when you did something so remarkable for them... Wow.

A young woman of some other ethnicity, possibly Romani?, was carrying a bundle draped in a sheet. Hanging out from beneath was the skin-covered, leg bone of a starving child. I knew in my mind this is a reality in many places, but it was always a concept, something distant,... remote and removed from my own reality. This was up close and in my personal space. A gross and incredibly disturbing scene that I will never forget.

Oh my goodness. There are no words. You've really done well to remind us all of our privilege in this journey, Liesa.

Eventually, we did arrive. Just in time to see our ferry about 1,000 yards offshore.

:scared1::scared1: :headache:

I also got one of my very favorite shots from the trip on the way over:

Remarkable! I love this.

The next second, before I knew what was happening, the most surprising, bordering on terrifying thing happened: I was, without warning, picked up and whisked overboard by a man to be carried to shore. It wasn't malicious or rough, but was so completely surprising that I may have yelped a bit as I was hoisted over the side.

 Wild!

... One last parting shot of stuff on a head. I never did grow tired of that.

This is absolutely amazing.

Two chapters to go and, depending how crappy I can make my writing, I’ll bet I can wrap it up today. Please contain your relief.

:rotfl: I, however, have thoroughly enjoyed every post of this report! I'll miss it.

No, I'm not on PCP. I swear.

:rotfl:
3. Be honest, have you even spent any time looking at the displays in the Stave Church??

Nope. But someone else mentioned it as well, recently, so I think I'll have to make time this year, finally.

4. I'd like to hear your opinions on the changes in the Norway Pavilion. Who remembers the super awesome Viking Ship there? My kids LOVED climbing all over that thing!

I don't remember the viking ship. Before my time of making clear Disney memories, I guess. But I love the Norway pavilion, and I was a big fan of Maelstrom and the educational opportunity it provided, while also being fun. That said, I'm not opposed to the introduction of Frozen into the pavilion (though I think it's gone a little too far in the gift shop area!!) I think it's a nice little ride that has served Disney well in getting more kids and families into the park and the pavilion. And just like it doesn't bother me that Donald is in the Mexico pavilion, I'm okay with this. Frozen isn't technically set in Norway, but Arendelle is heavily based on Norway. I'm reasonably okay with it.

Enjoy the photogenic side of EPCOT’s China Pavilion:

Beautiful!

I think my favorite little tidbit was this Chinese Zodiac using all Disney animals. Cute and creative.

Me, too!

5. Did Steppe buy anything from Karamell Kuche? Has she ever? Have you?

I'll guess: No to all three.

6. The gondolas are obviously representative of Venice, but what Italian place does the Plaza area represent?

Oooh, ooh, I might actually know this one without any googling!! Is it based on the Piazza Navona in Rome?? Because I've BEEN to that Bernini fountain...twice! Dipped my feet in it before the authorities cracked down on fountain-foot-dipping and whatnot. Best gelato I ever tasted was in that plaza. I've only ever been to Rome, Florence, and Assisi. But I'd love to see Venice someday.

7. Now for a bonus! What is YOUR most and least favorite Pavilions in WS?? Go the extra mile and rank them!

Favourite would be Morocco, or Japan. Then Canada, because of our wedding. Least favourite...gee, I like them all...probably Germany since there's not much there for me.

Morocco
Japan
Canada
Mexico
France & UK (I always group France/UK pavilions together for some reason)
China
Norway
America (good pavilion, but most familiar to me due to living on the border, so less of a novelty.)
Germany

1. Have you ever had a marg from La Cava, and if so what is your favorite flavor?? I order something different every time I go, because I can't choose!
Well....no. I've been curious to try, but never went into The Ditch. Having always done family trips, my girls obviously had no interest, and my wife is a light drinker, occasionally having a cocktail but not often, so she's never been bothered to go either.

2. Can someone please explain this statue to me? Is she nude? Running? What is she running from? Be as creative as you'd care to be. ;)
Troll horn.

Now the question is..."Is she running away from the horn...or towards it?"

And I bet you thought I was referring to the pastry, didn't you...

3. Be honest, have you even spent any time looking at the displays in the Stave Church??
Why yes I have. Although it was Frozen-ified on my last rip. I understand they have now Marvel-ified it. Might try to stop in there anyway. I do appreciate the attempt to merge the popular Disney IP with Norwegian history and culture.

5. Did Steppe buy anything from Karamell Kuche? Has she ever? Have you?
I will say you bought something. Because if not...are you nuts? Didn't you just smell that?
Yes, I have bought multiple things there. This place and Les Halles fight to see who will do more damage to my waistline.

6. The gondolas are obviously representative of Venice, but what Italian place does the Plaza area represent?
St. Mark's Square, I do believe..and without google.

7. Now for a bonus! What is YOUR most and least favorite Pavilions in WS?? Go the extra mile and rank them!
Oh, a tough one. OK, let's try. And I'll try to give some reasoning for some.

Morocco - I don't know why. I love the "back rooms" with the fountains. It's a refreshing break form the heat and not usually crowded
France - Les Halles and the music in Impressions de France (although I have not actually watched in person, I need to fix that)
Italy - food and I like the fountain
Mexico - I always liked the interior with it's eternal night
UK - I like the UK in general. I enjoy fish & chips. I would like to do the "tea tour" one day
Norway - I have not seen Norway since the loss of Maelstrom. May change after my trip.
China - I enjoy the acrobats and the garden. My girls like to meet Mulan. Not much else excites me
Germany - Karmel Kuche. Not much else.
Japan - cool gift shop if you like that kind of thing
Canada - Could be so much better
US - I really have never gone into the pavilion. I may rank it higher if I experienced more. Another thing on my very long "to do" list.

What an interesting and eventful good bye to Africa.

Ah, The Ditch! I must visit there again soon!

Too bad you can't make it to DL in October...our paths will cross at some point!

P is for: Picture Perfect Pandora, Pt. 2
Night time brings on an entirely new vibe in Pandora: quiet, peaceful, and no less visually stunning than during the day. It is a land that beckons the visitor to simply wander and discover new beauty on each winding trail while the sounds of trickling water, distant drumming, or yet undiscovered species' calls accompany you.

Photographer beware: Take a tripod or don't bother. ;)

What about people who have a camera, but aren't even remotely close to being able to call themselves a photographer? Hmmm? What about us?

Beautiful pictures (as normal). These two are my favorite. Good thing, at least there's one photographer (or at least one who know sauntering is best) on this thread.

Which goes to prove that money just can't buy intelligence. :rolleyes2

Nope, but it can buy a whole lot of stupid! I work with many people who make well over 6 figures and are "intelligent". Big difference between book intelligence and real intelligence and I've come to the conclusion common sense is not common.

It still amazes me that businesses need signs to remind people not to flush trash. Seriously.
See above

I like the Frozen attractions. However, I miss the old Norway as well. I wish they could have added in the Frozen stuff and still retained the cultural and "authentic" Norway aspects.

I do too, and think they could have. It really is a shame that for example an Oaken's Trading Post with REAL Norwegian stuff couldn't have been added. Something like that.

Excuse me for my late arrival with comments. I am now back on a PC and can do quotes except they disappeared there so Take 2...

It's great to have you back!! We've missed you; and YAY for getting a new PC that will be more useful to you. As for quotes disappearing... it's an inherent talent the DIS has all on its own.

I have yet to see Pandora - your photos are incredibly beautiful!

I really enjoy that area so much. And I don't think it's only because it's so new.

Despite the fact you've moved on I'm still going to answer Butchart Gardens as we've been there! See...real Butchart Gardens! It's a bit bigger!

Schnikies! Yes, BIGGER!!

...and the children are a lot smaller!

Awww, look how young they are!

Anyone know where the original Il Porcellino is?

Not me!! LOL!! Thanks for that! (And having Googled, it is in Chicago, yes?)

It really doesn't impress me! I think most people feel the same about their own country. There is no ride and it only represents a little part of the UK in England and fails to represent the other home nations of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. It is a bit of a bugbear when some people on the other side of the Atlantic say "So you're from Scotland, England". Nearly as bad as people accusing Canadians of being Americans!

I can see that. And yes, it does make me sad that Ireland and Scotland aren't much better represented. But... "Scotland, England"? That's just so weird to me.

Given others have already given Debussy and Saint-Saens I'll add in Ravel and I'm sure Offenbach (although German born) is there too!

Hannah has picked a pearl and we have eaten at Teppan Edo.

I did see Ravel or Offenbach on the playlist!!! Well done, my friend!

I need to wear my pearl more often.

I love the photos of your dresses! I would love to wear them! What a lot of work and talent involved.

Thank you! It was a fun season in my life making and re-enacting at various balls and events. I though, need to sell them for other hobbies. :)

This would stress me so much. I hate not being in control of such things. I'm so glad you made your flight.

I am too!! I"m sure we'd have made it home the next day, or the next, but it was definitely a long, stressful day to be sure.

I'm way behind, as usual, but thank you for all the story-telling and trip-reporting! I can only imagine how stressed you were on that last day in Africa, trying to make your flight. And completely understand your lack of motivation in collecting supplies for groups that don't appreciate them.

Well, I'm behind every weekend when I hit up threads. It's hard to only have time anymore to read and comment one a week (if I'm lucky). Full time work makes DISsing tough! Me no likey!

However, I am so glad you enjoyed the writing and photos. :) I was very stressed and I am usually the type who can handle a fair amount of stress. I have no idea if I'll ever return. However, if I do, I'd like to go to East Africa this time and go on a REAL Safari. Perhaps some medical work could be tacked on. I have a friend at work who is doing so next month to Tanzania and Kenya, so maybe there's an opportunity there I can explore. But it'll be a few years down the road.

(((hugs))) Sending more hugs for the continued stresses in your life. Glad to see you have lots of fun plans going for the future, however.

Thanks, Irene. :) I have 3 trips planned this year and am excited for each one for different reasons. Be looking for an "Early Start TR" coming soon.

Oh, and the square in the Italy pavilion - isn't that supposed to be St. Mark's Square, in Venice?

Yes, it is. :) This from the DIS: "The 83 foot belltower in the World Showcase's Italy is an authentic replica of the original campanile in St. Mark's Square. The great attention paid to detail is showcased on the angel atop the bell tower. It is covered with real gold leaf even though it is up so high that guests really cannot appreciate it."

The main thing I've done in the Japan pavilion is look at all the Pokemon stuff, lol. And this was *before* dd had nearly as much stuff. Side note - I just got back from San Diego Comic-Con, and didn't bother even looking at any of the Pokemon stuff for sale, since dd has so much already and none of it looked particularly interesting from the aisle view. Instead, I loaded her up on the giveaways related to all the more obscure anime she has discovered in the last couple of years...

I remember when they had a temporary display of (I don't have any idea what they are called) but little things. ? Little models made of clay like sushi sets and kitchen items. Does that ring a bell? Anyway, I like that there is SO much to see there and it seems different every time.

Do you have any trips coming up to Disney?

Hang in there, Liesa. I hope things improve for you.

Thanks, Mark. I appreciate your friendship and your prayers.

Well, I guess I screwed that up, then.

Always room for improvement. ;)

But they have Beaver Butt soap! What else could you possibly need??

Free mac and cheese for life?

1. No idea. The, uh....Canada Gardens?

2. I'm pretty sure that's where Hansel and Gretel were supposed to be boiled into a stew. Anybody checked the menu at Le Cellier lately?
No.

and... :rotfl2::rotfl::lmao:I hear that Mac and Cheese would pair equally well with that dish.

I don't remember the name of it, but it's the one in Quebec City (Old City).
Nope. Something in Ottawa according to the sources I looked at.

I can't think of any French composers. Fail on my part.

TBH the only one I truly knew for certain off the top of my head was Debussy. So, I'm not a whole lotta better. ;)

I didn't even know this was a thing. Monkeys?

No. chickens of all things. :rotfl:

I'm guessing something to do with Tripoli.

There is a signed (replica) of a letter from George Washington to King Mohammed...

Here being a history buff, I think you'll find this very interesting:

https://founders.archives.gov/documents/Washington/05-04-02-0251

Ok, I knew our tastes were completely different. But this was a gold mine for recently-hired-full-time U.S. Geography teacher.

Oh that I can see! I just don't have a need for a license plate from XXX state. And that's all that seemed to be there. Hoodies, shot glasses and license plates.

I've visited too many National Parks. No! Leave the animals wild!

Agreed! Although, I'd argue that by now any bird bold enough to endure a Disney park isn't wild anymore.

Great movie! Hope you had the tissues handy.

I did. That ending was ROUGH!

Oh, sure. What could go wrong?

LOL!

I'm a parent, so yes, I know that point.

And the older you get, the easier it is to get to that point.

Oh man, this must have looked like heaven.

Mmm, pastries. And lattes.

party::jumping1:

Thank you for your service to Africa, and for sharing it! Truly a world apart.

You are very welcome. I have a co-worker who is serving in Tanzania next month at a medical clinic, then climbing Kilimanjaro. Perhaps down the road I can find a similar opportunity in East Africa and then go on a legit safari. I already have my contact for that.

Like the rest of us, if she has to hear "Let It Go" one more time...

:rotfl2::rotfl::lmao:

That perfectly explains it.

I think I remember the viking ship?

Anyway, I'm ambivalent on the changes. I couldn't recognize anything on the menu in the restaurant and probably never would have eaten there. And I had no love for the Maelstrom. The ride made absolutely no sense whatsoever. Given the name, I was expecting a thrill ride, and instead there were some vikings and trolls for some reason and then a painting of an oil rig. :confused3

I think it was supposed to portray Norse stories and legends and mixed in some scenes of daily life (the rigs). Without knowing the legends of the trolls, I can see how it'd be lost on most. (And believe me, I was/am certainly NO expert on that at all and know very little.) But, to me, while I think Frozen is a cute ride, that I will do every few trips, I preferred it more Norwegian and less brand.

I was tempted, given the smell. But, no.

I hear the maple popcorn in Canada rivals this now. Then again, I don't have a major sweet tooth, so tend to seek out savories over candy.

I thought the plaza was Venice as well. At least the tower is.

Yes, it is. Along with Doge's Palace. :) Did you know the angel on top there is really (no, for reals) gold leafed?

1. Germany - I love the detail here and it has the best Perry mission.
2. U.K.
3. Canada
4. China
5. Morocco
6. Mexico
7. France
8. Norway
9. Italy
10. Japan

I don't know how to rank the U.S., since it's my own country.

Very interesting!

In my next post, I'll rank mine and compare.

And thank you for sharing it with us. You certainly had some very high highs, and very low lows.

It was definitely that kind of trip!

Of course. There are no clocks in Africa. Time doesn't mean the same thing there, does it?

No, much the same as Latin America and Central Asia.

What could possibly go wrong?

I could have my coffee press stolen?

I thought about that. So... you have some who will not drink alcohol and some who will. Why not offer both libations and let the guests chose?
If the answer is because the Islamic people would be offended.... I'm sorry, but, too bad.
I prefer to use a live and let live policy. You don't want to drink? That's fine, don't. You want to? Fine, go ahead. I'll do my thing, you do yours.

Now... if the custom is to not drink in the country... or everyone is Islamic, then I will gladly refrain.

Hmm.... let's put it this way. If I go to someone's house and they are Islamic, then I'm not going to bring or expect alcohol.
But if they come to my house, then I will serve wine to my other guests.
But if they are the only guests coming, then I won't serve it to anyone, including myself.

This is sound philosophy. I like it. And completely agree.

Thoughts on that? Planning or thinking of going back?

I have a contact who runs Air Supported Safaris, and now just heard of a co-worker who is going to Kenya and Tanzania for a medical trip. After her work, she's going to climb Kilimanjaro and do a mini safari. So maybe down the road, I can entertain the thought of that. Right now, things are just too topsy -turvey.

Don't normally comment on this, but I really like that top you're wearing.

Thanks! I actually have that packed for my travel day for Disney coming up!

Spartan is okay... as long as you've got that "clean" component to go with it. Which you didn't always see in other places.

Clean trumps "stuff" in a medical clinic in my book.

Holy hot, Batman!

Ever get your rear end stuck on a hot leather seat? Then peeled it off leaving your epidermis?

Wow... Just...... wow. Talk about un-appreciative. Do they get tons of supplies from people all the time or something? Wow.

I have no idea. Perhaps from foreign government agencies? USAID? WHO?

I like the shutters.
Then again, maybe they came later as a result of broken windows and no glass available/affordable.

I think maybe because of the intense storms that come in during the rainy season? maybe?

Shoot. I'd have loved to have seen it.

Perhaps I can post a photo on my next TR during the Christmas season. :)

Ouch. You must've deflated even more... or were you already at rock bottom and you just couldn't go any lower?

No, it was definitely rock bottom.

So.... I gather that this is the norm, so why were you uncomfortable?
And why did the arguing start all over again after payment was made?

It's just hard to see conflict in any context. I think after payment was made there was an argument over them saying it wasn't what they agreed on claiming that's not what they meant. Of course I couldn't understand the majority and was going off of body language and the tiny bit that was told to us. I honestly didn't give a crap. I just wanted to get home.

You may be down, but you did manage to muster a smile and a thumb's up for the camera. :)

I knew I'd likely never be on a boat in Africa ever again.

Ew. Then again... there's that reality thing again.

Reminds me of something I saw just the other day:

"There's plenty of fish in the sea. But there's plenty of trash, too."

It's disgusting. And something I never got used to living overseas. The total disregard for the environment was very disheartening.

So everyone, including those gentlemen in the above photo wore one? Was the above photo taken before this? i.e. Did you have a lifejacket to start?

Yes, by the time we left everyone had one on. So, this photo was taken after we got on, but before we left while we were waiting for additional ones to be brought. The ladies all had one, but the guys didn't. They just didn't have enough on board to begin with.

Why was it stressful? Or are you talking about everything leading up to the boat ride?

Yes, it was taking a bit to wind down from the day so far. Plus, I hear about tragic ferry/boat accidents all the time on the news, and didn't want to end up a news story on some foreign website.

Oh? Who? The people on that boat? How do you know they were not happy with you?

A couple of the men on the boat yelled at us when they saw my camera. Not sure why? Were they doing something illegal? I have no idea.

They didn't want to ground it with the outboard motor.

Holy crap! Did you think you were being kidnapped???

:faint:

No, but then again, I didn't have any time to think about anything other than the fact I was being picked up.

 Of course!

And yet... I thought about this too. If he gasses up without a fare, he's losing time when he could have a fare. So by quickly getting to the place where a fare is likely, i.e. the dock, he gets his passengers and can fill up without fear of being late and having someone else take them.

That actually makes sense. And yet, added to our stress of cutting it way too close for an international flight.

And I had no love for the Maelstrom. The ride made absolutely no sense whatsoever. Given the name, I was expecting a thrill ride, and instead there were some vikings and trolls for some reason and then a painting of an oil rig. :confused3

I just saw that Liesa commented on this and felt compelled to jump into the discussion since my one week cruising to Norway obviously qualifies me as a Norway expert! :rotfl2:But I did read a couple of books on Norway before the trip and we did quite a few museums and the one thing I took back from this was how well that ride did indeed show Norway. The problem being that there is not that much to show with regard to history because for a long time it was a very poor area that was more or less a colony of Sweden or Denmark. It really was the oil that transformed it into a modern country. So, we have a rich, old folklore and then a lot of nothing happening until modern days. However, I think the ride did fail in regard to making people understand that those two elements really were what the country was about. And it did not emphasis enough on the amazing landscape that the country has also to offer.

I also think that I once read that Maelstrom was one of the first attractions suffering from budget cuts and such. I seem to have heard that it was supposed to be a longer ride. Need to ask my husband about it.

Btw, Maelstrom was the first big thing that Joe Rohde worked on. I think his subsequent projects turned out better...

Only a year? Rookie!

:lmao:

I know!! then, again, it's been dying a slow death for quite some time, and I need a fresh start. Can't have 2 TRs going (although I have in the past, but that was before I started working full time). I'm sad I didn't quite make it to "Z" this time around, though.

Of course. If that's the best one can do, one should look forward to it.

You should try it sometime. ;)

Your writing is always entertaining and never "crappy"... well, with the exception of this, perhaps:

IMG_1769-L.jpg

:rotfl2::rotfl::lmao:So this TR isn't completely in the tank.

Oh! This is another day. I thought it was a continuation of the last update... I was thinking "Wait! She left off in America, how'd she get back to Mexico?"

Nope, F&W is tough to do justice to in just one day.

I had an empenada for the first time recently. Didn't look anything like that. Yours looks better. ::yes::

Did you like it? This was very good and I would likely get another given the chance.

Was sooooooo confused there!
"Wait... she doesn't want to go on the ride because she'll get Rohypnol'd, but she went anyway?"

Took me a minute... but I got it eventually!

I kinda have no desire to go there too.

Friends have said it's lovely. but they are 100% confined to their compound and they are guarded with security with automatic rifles. No thanks.

Ah yes.... What was your nickname again? Liesa tequila?

Fran calls me "Liesa of the Tequila". :lmao:

Yep. Definitely Liesa tequila. ::yes::

HEHE. :)

I have, but don't remember which one. Think I've had... two?

I'm pretty sure I've tried the Blood Orange, Horchata, Avocado, Classic?, Minty Pineapple. I make jalepeno ones at home but would love to try theirs next time.

Now that's ridiculous!

It was lame. I just don't find this pavilion very interesting to photograph I guess.

Ah yes. I do recall that. Still not one of my favourite things. I don't mind it, but.... I just find it Okay.

Even with all of the F&W goodies, I still may get one again. Or I just need to learn how to make it.

mmmmm... those troll horns look good, though. Yum!

I'd try a bite. :)

I wonder if she's not supposed to represent Freya? The Goddess of Love? Just guessing, though.

Next time I'm there I'm going to ask. But, and maybe it's just me, but I'd think Freya would be a bit more... umm... full figured.

There's a very logical yet sad explanation.
She got Rohypnol'd while riding It's a Small Mexican World. Luckily she came to and escaped, but not before she'd had her clothes removed. She's running from that, of course.
It'd be nice if someone helped that poor girl. Maybe threw her a towel or something.

I could offer her a Rice Cream as she passed by. Not sure I'd spare my own clothes though. Heck, I might not even HAVE underwear!

I'm at work, otherwise I'd do it for you. It would take a lot of work, though... maybe.... 5-10 seconds?

I really need PS. :(

Sheesh! The way you describe it, I thought it would score a negative three.

Last year, DHS scored a -3.

I don't remember the Viking Ship, but I do remember the old ride of course. I liked the old menu, but get that it wouldn't appeal to the majority of the clientele. At least not at the time, maybe it would now, since there are more choices available elsewhere? I too find the over-emphasis on Frozen merch a bit excessive. I don't mind the new ride though, but certainly won't stand in line... at all... for it. FP, little to no line or it gets skipped.

I agree and I even have a FiP for it soon! :)

I did the same thing! And I love the photos you took. :)

Thanks, PK, that means a lot coming from.

Fell in love with it? Because he's kinda ugly in a cute way?

Just was in the right place at the right time. I dunno... just caught my eye??

Well.... I was pretty sure that the plaza was representative of Venice too. The Doges palace recreation on the east side of the plaza, the bell tower of San Marco, the two columns out front of St Mark (represented by the lion) the patron saint of Venice and St. Theodore (killing the dragon) who was the previous patron saint of Venice.

Yes, and I know you've been there. Did you know all of that from your pre-trip research?

Okay! Here we go. Might be swayed a bit in other directions, depending on my mood, but...

Japan 9
Germany (due to nostalgia factor) 8
France 6
UK 5
Italy 5
China 4
Mexico 4
Norway 4
Canada 4
Morocco 3
US 2

Huh!!! I'd say fairly close to mine with some changes.

Yes, aperture. Small aperture means it takes more time for the light to expose the sensor... hence, more depth of field. Larger aperture, less time, less depth = blurry background.

I think I understand now! :) Thanks!

Ok. I won't be there when you are, so go ahead and have one on me and send me the bill.

Hmm... Can I add postage?

Well....

Yes.

Oh, I see how it is.

Live and let live except when it comes to ambulation... then it's all judge-y judge-y ;)

I know. They should hire me!

I'd sign up as a buyer for the US Pav.

Sorry. No idea what you could be referring to.
Nope.
None.
At all.

Uh huh. Sure.

Whoops! Went back and corrected. Took the photo.

Theeeeeeeeere ya go.

That was a fun story!! Thank you for sharing that!

You're lucky you didn't get your knuckles rapped.

I thought for a moment I was going to get thrown out of the park and a lifetime ban.

Not bad. I rated it a 4. I like the show well enough. Le Cellier is good. The garden is nice enough as is the waterfall. But.... I live there, so... Ain't nuttin' new to me!

I totally get that. Princess Leia said the same thing about her UK Pav.

Well... sure. But if the other part of that equation is just gin... then I'll skip the gin and go straight for the ice cream.

I think these are made from a Vodka base. ?? Need to check it out.

Not me!

Because I've never seen the belly dancers there.

:rolleyes1

And now... unless you go the Marakesh, I'm not sure you ever will.

Another vote a approval, and even with a high rating, for Japan. :D

Never heard them... but want to. I wouldn't mind seeing the show too, been a looooooong time since I last saw it. But... it's a time sucker, so... may not anyways.

It's only 15 minutes or so. Not too bad and totally worth it!

Won't quote all the photos, of course.
But... wow! You certainly are very talented! You sewed all those? Or just your own? (i.e., I assume those are your daughters with you. You sewed theirs too?)

Thank you. I sewed all of mine and helped the girls with theirs as well. But they did most of the sewing on their own.

This sounds ominous...

It was a day to just soak in ominous-ness.

This is so lovely of them, but yes...I'd be stressed.

It was, and yet, easily could have been done the day before for sure.

Oh my goodness. That. Is. Wild. After all the work and money you put in to provide them with supplies.

It was. I was so sad to have had such a hasty and bordering on rude receiving after all the hard work I'd put into it. I'd go back to the village and do work there, but never to the gov't hospital after that.

I can not get over this...

I know what you did for them will still help many people, and that's reward enough. But their blatantly rude treatment of you all when you did something so remarkable for them... Wow.

Perhaps if the team had interfaced with them a bit better on timing of our visit? or ?? maybe it'd been different. But sometimes you can just tell from body language and other cues that a person has an inherent attitude about them. It just rubbed me the wrong way.

Oh my goodness. There are no words. You've really done well to remind us all of our privilege in this journey, Liesa.

Thank you, Meghan. I tried very hard to leap frog the chapters to make that stand out. We live such unbelievably privileged lifestyles compared to many places out there.

Remarkable! I love this.

:goodvibes

This is absolutely amazing.

Thanks! I love that photo very much.

:rotfl: I, however, have thoroughly enjoyed every post of this report! I'll miss it.

Well, there won't be exotic foreign lands on the next one (starting soon), but I do hope you'll join me for another TR when I get it started.

Nope. But someone else mentioned it as well, recently, so I think I'll have to make time this year, finally.

It'll be worth your time!

I agree to a point. I don't mind at all inserting the franchise, but it's (just my humble opinion here) WAY overdone so much that it overshadows the original intent of the educational emphasis that the WS was based on.

I'll guess: No to all three.

You'd be correct.

I think you may be right on that one! And no one else commented on that!

Germany

Interesting line up! Everyone's is so different and I love to see how others view them.

No, much the same as Latin America and Central Asia.

Good info to know. I'll allow extra time when (if) visiting.

I could have my coffee press stolen?

Good Lord, no! Anything but that?!?!?!

I have a contact who runs Air Supported Safaris, and now just heard of a co-worker who is going to Kenya and Tanzania for a medical trip. After her work, she's going to climb Kilimanjaro and do a mini safari. So maybe down the road, I can entertain the thought of that.

Cool! I'm sure you'll be very excited to go when the time comes. :)

Right now, things are just too topsy -turvey

Ever get your rear end stuck on a hot leather seat? Then peeled it off leaving your epidermis?

Yes..... Shorts are not fun.

I have no idea. Perhaps from foreign government agencies? USAID? WHO?

Not from you again, though.

I think maybe because of the intense storms that come in during the rainy season? maybe?

Ah! That would make sense.

No, it was definitely rock bottom.

:(

It's just hard to see conflict in any context. I think after payment was made there was an argument over them saying it wasn't what they agreed on claiming that's not what they meant. Of course I couldn't understand the majority and was going off of body language and the tiny bit that was told to us. I honestly didn't give a crap. I just wanted to get home.

I get that. All of it.

I knew I'd likely never be on a boat in Africa ever again.

And yet... perhaps again on the other coast. :)

It's disgusting. And something I never got used to living overseas. The total disregard for the environment was very disheartening.

People have to start taking responsibility for themselves. It can't be just here and there.

Yes, by the time we left everyone had one on. So, this photo was taken after we got on, but before we left while we were waiting for additional ones to be brought. The ladies all had one, but the guys didn't. They just didn't have enough on board to begin with.

Ah. Okay, got it.

Yes, it was taking a bit to wind down from the day so far. Plus, I hear about tragic ferry/boat accidents all the time on the news, and didn't want to end up a news story on some foreign website.

Yep. That thought had crossed my mind as well.

A couple of the men on the boat yelled at us when they saw my camera. Not sure why? Were they doing something illegal? I have no idea.

Hmmm... maybe? Or maybe they wanted payment for the photo?

They didn't want to ground it with the outboard motor.

Hmmm... fixed and not tiltable perhaps. Okay, makes sense then.

No, but then again, I didn't have any time to think about anything other than the fact I was being picked up.

So you don't want strange men trying to pick you up.
Stay out of bars, then. ;)

I know!! then, again, it's been dying a slow death for quite some time, and I need a fresh start. Can't have 2 TRs going (although I have in the past, but that was before I started working full time). I'm sad I didn't quite make it to "Z" this time around, though.

Last update title:
UVWXYZ

Updated Very Wonderfully eXactly as You Zip through it.

Nope, F&W is tough to do justice to in just one day.

::yes::

Did you like it? This was very good and I would likely get another given the chance.

Yes I did! :)

Friends have said it's lovely. but they are 100% confined to their compound and they are guarded with security with automatic rifles. No thanks.

No thanks. Just have zero interest.

Fran calls me "Liesa of the Tequila". :lmao:

That's it! :)

I'm pretty sure I've tried the Blood Orange, Horchata, Avocado, Classic?, Minty Pineapple. I make jalepeno ones at home but would love to try theirs next time.

Quite a few. But there's still lots, I think.

It was lame. I just don't find this pavilion very interesting to photograph I guess.

I find the interior much more interesting to shoot than the exterior.

Even with all of the F&W goodies, I still may get one again. Or I just need to learn how to make it.

Hmmm... have mixed feelings about that.
On the one hand, it would be nice to have whenever you want... but on the other, it takes away from the magic of getting it at Disney, you know?

Next time I'm there I'm going to ask. But, and maybe it's just me, but I'd think Freya would be a bit more... umm... full figured.

I Googled and all the pictures I saw didn't show her as "full figured". Most are fairly thin.

I could offer her a Rice Cream as she passed by. Not sure I'd spare my own clothes though. Heck, I might not even HAVE underwear!

:rotfl:

Last year, DHS scored a -3.

Really! Even with TOT?

I agree and I even have a FiP for it soon! :)

You do? Huh! I don't think I could sacrifice TT or Soarin'. But good for you. :)

Thanks, PK, that means a lot coming from.

You're welcome.

Just was in the right place at the right time. I dunno... just caught my eye??

Ah.

Yes, and I know you've been there. Did you know all of that from your pre-trip research?

Most. I forgot the name of the saint with the dragon so had to look it up again. The rest I remembered.

Huh!!! I'd say fairly close to mine with some changes.

Really! Looking forward to seeing your list.

I think I understand now! :) Thanks!

You're welcome.

Hmm... Can I add postage?

Dang! I was hoping you'd not mention that.

Poop. Okay.

Oh, I see how it is.

Live and let live except when it comes to ambulation... then it's all judge-y judge-y ;)

:lmao:

I'd sign up as a buyer for the US Pav.

::yes::

That was a fun story!! Thank you for sharing that!

I really like that one, myself. :)

I thought for a moment I was going to get thrown out of the park and a lifetime ban.

 A fate worse than death!

I totally get that. Princess Leia said the same thing about her UK Pav.

Yes, I saw that.

And now... unless you go the Marakesh, I'm not sure you ever will.

Oh? They took the belly dancers out? Not PC enough?

It's only 15 minutes or so. Not too bad and totally worth it!

I meant the show "American Adventure" which is 28 and a half minutes long.

Thank you. I sewed all of mine and helped the girls with theirs as well. But they did most of the sewing on their own.

Impressive. :)

I can see where you might not be jumping up and down with excitement to plan another similar trip! East Africa would be a very different experience, I suspect, although I haven't been there, so have no first-hand experience. I do suspect they have more tourist-friendly accommodations for actual tourists, due to the safari trade. Luxury travel, even.

I have 3 trips planned this year and am excited for each one for different reasons. Be looking for an "Early Start TR" coming soon.

I will be on the lookout! I did see that you are part of the huge girls' trip PTR - that sounds like it will be a lot of fun. (I'm lurking more than commenting, lately)

I remember when they had a temporary display of (I don't have any idea what they are called) but little things. ? Little models made of clay like sushi sets and kitchen items. Does that ring a bell? Anyway, I like that there is SO much to see there and it seems different every time.

I'm sure I didn't see that at Epcot (since I was totally in the Pokemon section of the store), but that sort of thing sounds very Japanese.

Do you have any trips coming up to Disney?

Not actually planned. I have a theoretical October 2019 trip in my head that would be just dh and me, but I have no idea if it will actually happen or not. Too many other places we want to go, too many other things to spend money on...

is for: Picture Perfect Pandora Pt. 1

In its conceptual design, Disney had envisioned a Mythical Creatures land at AK, and after just shy of 20 years, Pandora was born. She’s beautiful, mysterious, flashy, yet subtle, and even has a touch of understated naughty. Pandora cemented Animal Kingdom’s solid hold on me for Top Park Pick with its addition, and I can now say if I only had one day in Orlando, this is the park I’d choose.
Understated naughty? splain please.
I think the land itself is pretty, yes. Having ridden FOP and NRJ in February, I'm not sure there's too much here, other than the decorations, for me. Since you read my TR, this is for those who were wise enough to stay away from it. ;)

FOP hurt my back. The little bar that comes up hit me right in the spot where I broke 3 vertebrae years ago and physically hurt. The ride itself was cool, but not 6 hours wait time cool. NRJ was meh, but then again, many dark rides are like that for me unless it's 98/100 outside (that's 98 degrees, and 100% humidity, which is pretty much June-August).

I think MK is still my favorite because it was my first with EPCOT coming in 2nd for me. AK was my least favorite, but maybe displaced HS for 3rd place. Tiffins, not Pandora...oh and dole whips.

Where was this at? Like the dragon head.

Some subtleties that I noticed in my wanderings were the lamp posts (I notice those wherever I am having a slight obsession with them, my favorite being ones they’ve seemingly removed from the DLR NOS bathroom area. Boo hoo!). As you enter Pandora from the walkway leading from Tiffins; each one is unique with a different shape and/or color.
I will have to keep an eye out in September. Can't say as I notice lamp posts much, but maybe will need to pay more attention.

Well....no. I've been curious to try, but never went into The Ditch. Having always done family trips, my girls obviously had no interest, and my wife is a light drinker, occasionally having a cocktail but not often, so she's never been bothered to go either.

Legit reasons to not go. I wouldn't say kids are NOT welcome, but I don't think much would interest them there.

Troll horn.

Now the question is..."Is she running away from the horn...or towards it?"

And I bet you thought I was referring to the pastry, didn't you...

:eek::eek::eek:

:rotfl2::rotfl::lmao:

Why yes I have. Although it was Frozen-ified on my last rip. I understand they have now Marvel-ified it. Might try to stop in there anyway. I do appreciate the attempt to merge the popular Disney IP with Norwegian history and culture.

Ok, this is news! Marvel in Norway? Um, ok. I suppose because of Thor? :confused3

I will say you bought something. Because if not...are you nuts? Didn't you just smell that?
Yes, I have bought multiple things there. This place and Les Halles fight to see who will do more damage to my waistline.

I didn't. Just far too many other things to eat in WS. But, I keep hearing good things, but then again, I"m don't have a big sweet tooth. I love the smell to be sure.

I think I am going to try an ice cream martini next time.

St. Mark's Square, I do believe..and without google.

Ding, ding, ding.

I love your reasoning. Good insights on them all and I can see and can see that our lists are very similar. Then again I can change my mind at a whim... just because.
