Flying out Tuesday (9/11) night from Portland, ME....and flying home from MCO Thursday (9/13) afternoon...crossing my fingers!
Not sure where you are flying in from but one thing I would do if I were you. IF IF IF your flight is canceled they will refund you the ticket price. Tell SWA you want to keep your return flight booked and just refund you the outbound flight. I would RIGHT THIS MINUTE reserve a rental car because if flights get canceled you won't be able to find a rental car within 100 miles of your home. I have a rental car reserved to pick up Thursday morning in case we need it.
I agree. My biggest issue is leaving my home with my dogs, and our pet sitter with no power. If we lose power I will not be able to enjoy our trip knowing our house/pet sitter will be frying in the house with our dogs. UGHHHHHH!!!
Oh, I booked both our departure and return flights as one way flights so we wouldn't run into this issue
Also, I live literally a mile from the airport we're flying out of, so no need for rental cars, thankfully. And it's a rather small regional airport so doesn't get crazy busy like the larger urban airports. Good idea booking the rental car now though. I'd rather be prepared for multiple scenarios, just in case!
It's good you have that option...although let's hope it doesn't come to that! We live roughly a 24 hour drive from Disney. We've made that drive a few times and it *stinks*. I think if I lived less than 10 hours I'd probably drive.Yeah...if it is a must...we will pack that mini van up, snag the kid from school and make that 9 hour drive!
Yep - we did that once too - did you notice I said "once"?It's good you have that option...although let's hope it doesn't come to that! We live roughly a 24 hour drive from Disney. We've made that drive a few times and it *stinks*. I think if I lived less than 10 hours I'd probably drive.
You are saying the route through Alabama to Florida is NOT a bad route? I'm getting more and more nervous as these storm tracks keep shifting. I am praying it doesn't go any further south.I live in Florida and that’s the route I take. It’s the way I went last year when Irma was going through. It’s. It a bad route honestly. We could go through Atlanta, but I have no desire to do that again after the fiasco that happened two years ago LOL. You will be fine.
My personal vacation concern (which for the record I acknowledge is totally a first world problem) is with tropical depression 9. I don’t know enough about how these things typically react once they hit the Caribbean. Can it just keep going west or do they always start turning north?
I’m considering adding days to my trip to make up for the potential of having to stay inside the hotel for a few days. Is that insane (I’m going with probably)? I have a feeling the flight change price will be prohibitive though since it won’t really be directly weather related.
I’m not a patient person so while logically I know all I can do is wait, I’m not a fun person to be around right now. Just ask my DH :/
They often can go west without turning north. It all depends on what else is in place in the atmosphere at the time.
Neither do I - it’s okay : )Capital Weather Gang (the Washington Post weather people and basically the local weather favorites here) just posted a new update. A hit in the Carolinas looks increasingly likely.
I know this is first world problems to the extreme, and that people actually losing houses, etc due to a hurricane is MUCH more important and worrisome, but as someone who for a variety of reasons is really looking forward to this vacation, I'm worrying. If there's a hurricane in the Carolinas, will that affect flights from the north to Orlando? I know nothing about flight routes and if they can just...go around or whatever.
We've got back up plans--leaving Wed afternoon, leaving Thursday, but DH just started his job and has *no* extra leave, so we'd prefer to not leave early if possible. And of course it's all moot if SW doesn't issue a travel advisory affecting our airport. Gosh, I don't do well with uncertainty, can you tell?!

It looks like Orlando and The World will have no problems at all from Florence.
However, the Carolina's do not look like they will be as lucky.
So please everyone in the path of Florence adhere to the instructions of your local agencies.
Be safe to all those in the path of Florence.
I think this should be safe space where we can voice our worries...I mean, we all understand that there are horrific possible outcomes for residents but our carefully planned, expensive, and much needed vacations matter too.
I have no answers about how airlines deal with it. I assumed they would most likely cancel which is the reason for my concern, but I truly hope I am wrong and they have ways of circumventing the storm. We are not on the coast but our plane on 9/14 seems to be coming from BWI and that is my fear...that it won’t be able to take off and cause a domino effect of cancellation or delay.
I don’t deal with uncertainty well at all either.
Thank you! Validation helps And you make a good point, I just want to be sensitive to people fearing losing homes, etc, since this is "just" a vacation.
Me either..and since no advisories have been issued it seems too early too call and ask. Are you flying SW too? I can't remember if you posted that or not...but they're usually pretty good about rearranging and getting planes where they need to be. Crossing my fingers for you!!!! We're all in this together at this point.
Yes, flying SW too.
