Ok- need some help. DH just got approved for the CIP. Yay for that.

I just found out his cousin is getting married in September. The best airline to get there is Delta (we are in LAS they are in Casper).

I don't want to use our URs for the trip. Both of us have various Chase cards, but only the SPG from Amex. What card would be best? Arrival+, a Delta card, or something I'm not even considering?

Looks like it would be 28k Delta miles/pp (we need 3) to get there, or about $870 total.

dont know why u dont want to use ur URs but UR portal is also an idea.
MR points also transfer to delta but the value isnt there...

i also see UA that will fly there on 20k points. maybe... but also UR points here as well.

You guys, I just booked our flights to Hawaii for the Friday after Christmas!!! Well, we're getting there, not sure how we'll get back yet, lol. I've been waiting and waiting for our day to open up on the schedule for Hawaiian Airlines and it finally did today and it was a decent price, $354ea for one-way direct Sacramento to Maui (after I booked it went up to $398 and AK is charging $750). That is pretty good for that time of year I think. The only problem is they wanted 40K points to book (120K for all 3 of us), so I decided to book it with the Biz Plat via AMEXtravel instead. I'll earn 5x MRs on the booking and then cash out 86,064MRs via Schwab to cover it. I know it's not the BEST redemption to Hawaii but considering the time of year, that we wanted to fly direct from SMF, and I need to put more spend on the Biz Plat anyway, it's a win for us. Now just waiting another week to book the return flights! (I did check booking HA via VA for 20K, but that was not available. Also nothing available for AK via BA).

We'll be staying at the Grand Wailea. As soon as we meet the spend on DH's Aspire we'll have enough Hilton points to book the 5 nights, plus I already have a reward night from my Aspire, so we'll do 6 nights in all. I'm so excited!!!

Maybe pay for the fares with the new CIP, earn 3xURs and make a nice dent into your MSR?

Sounds amazing!!!

so I'm not spending money to save money...

This is a clear violation of CaliforniaGirlonomics!!! :) But seriously, I was looking at a NEST camera system and Philips Hue lighting, and I think Dell sells both of those. Coupled with the 10% off, which I thankfully had on my business card, it should be a pretty nice savings. I may split up the Hue light bulbs and save half of what I think I want for the second Amex credit. Although right now, I can't decide whether to keep the card. My annual fee is coming up soon (of course it couldn't be before 2/1). I keep going back and forth. I definitely get value of it from the 1.5x points over $5k with taxes, but I miss the 50% back in points. I hope they give me a good retention offer.

I had the 10% offer on my Biz Plat too, so I'd like to find a way to use it and the $100 statement credit! My AF will come due sometime this summer. I'm pretty sure I am not going to keep it, barring a radical retention offer. Keep us posted on your retention offer efforts.

My $10 Sam's Club Chase offer finally credited, but I STILL haven't gotten the AT&T offer. Signed up January 9 and I've sent an SM. They said they've escalated my problem and I'll hear something in six business days (weird time frame but ok). So if I don't hear something by the end of the day Tuesday, I'll be mad.
I keep checking DH’s Freedom and his AT & T $40 offer has completely disappeared with no credit. It’s not on his expired, redeemed or active list. I guess I’ll be SM’ing Chase about it.

In regard to the Dell $100 statement credit with the Amex Biz Plat, it looks like Dell doesn't sell gift cards online. I'd like to use the benefit, but we don't really need/want anything that Dell sells. Curious what other folks are buying that are close to the $100 price point. I've seen the earlier discussion about cameras, etc., but I'd like to stay as close as possible to $100 so I'm not spending money to save money...

Just grab some headphones.

Don't forget that Dell will match Amazon, best buy, etc as long as they are *from* Amazon, bestbuy, walmart, etc and not a third party.

I went ahead and used 2 plat $100 credits + the 10% off to grab a pair of Sennheiser PXC 550s for ~$50 after all is said and done. Almost went ahead and grabbed the Bose QC 35s, but didn't feel like throwing down an extra $100. This is for the Mrs. anyways as I already have the Sennheiser HD1s.

TLDR: Stack the 10% and grab some $100-$110 headphones. Memory cards are also good if you go through those.

Congratulations! We’ll be just an island over at the same time!

We would’ve preferred to fly Hawaiian, but although their seats open up 330 days in advance, their award availability in the 2 weeks leading up to Christmas and for about 2 weeks after Christmas is so difficult to predict. If you want to use miles to book award seats on Hawaiian during Christmastime, you need to either be on your game and check the website every night when inventory gets loaded at, I believe, midnight Hawaii time; or sign up for alerts via Expert Flyer. For sure though, those cash fares will only go up from release and stay high until maybe a month or so before departure, when I notice a lot of movement on Hopper. Last year, we hadn't settled on dates when cash prices were released, and I saw fares on the 23rd and 24th go up from $380-something to $510 one-way when we finally booked in April. Fortunately, we each had $400 vouchers, but what could've been a free flight worked out to $110 per person. I kept checking for award fares too, and I don't think anything in economy before Christmas ever popped up by the time we booked; first class flights did show up for 80k HA miles, and I think I might've noticed some award availability in economy appear in June long after we had our flights, but they weren't saver awards.

We're flying United to HNL this year. Booked saver award seats at 22.5k UA miles apiece promptly at 334 days out.

You might not think this was the best redemption, but you saved yourself a lot of stress!

Will Southwest ever go to Hawaii? Sigh... been waiting to book them for my June trip. Might end up just using AA.

@snugglebug posted an update the other day:
Southwest Update :flower1:

Southwest Hawaii flights should be in the air within 60 days. The company now hopes to sell tickets in February for flights starting the following month. There’s just one big caveat, that the government and its FAA remain open for business. Flights were to be cleared for takeoff this month (January) before the federal government shutdown prevented their obtaining final approval.

SWA Community Outreach Director Laura Nieto: “Our hope would be to be able to sell by the end of February and potentially fly in March.” (1/29/19)

The above shows just how fast and fluid the situation is for Southwest Hawaii flights. Last week’s comments before the reopening were as follows:

SWA COO Mike Van de Ven: The company has only a “reasonable chance” to start Hawaii flights this quarter due to the shutdown. A March start would only be possible in the event the shutdown ends in the next week (which it did). “Otherwise, it will actually be in the second quarter.” (1/24/19)

SWA CEO Gary Kelly: “Our remaining work is currently suspended until the government reopens and the FAA is allowed to resume normal certification activities…. We are anxious for the government to resolve this shutdown so we can bring low fares and a boost to Hawaii’s travel and tourism industry.” (1/24/19)

Beat of Hawaii’s take:
We remain hopeful that flights will start in time for spring break. Southwest had previously planned to be flying to the islands in time for the high-priced holiday season that just passed. That didn’t happen, which then brought them to starting in time for spring break (March). Then the shutdown occurred, throwing schedules into limbo.

Entering the market during a peak period such as March is highly desirable in terms of attaining somewhat higher airfares. Starting in an already low cost season (mid-April to early June) doesn’t really make a lot of sense economically.

Should anything goes wrong with the current plan to fly in March, whether it be a certification issue or related to the federal government, the next desirable time for Southwest to begin flights would be in June.
I also found this article: https://www.marketwatch.com/story/southwest-paid-for-faa-inspector-during-shutdown-2019-01-29
"Southwest Airlines Co. benefited from an unusual deal with federal aviation regulators during the recent partial government shutdown: The carrier agreed to cover the cost of briefly recalling a furloughed safety inspector to sign off on putting three new jets into service."

Sounds like they're trying to get into the air just as much as we want to them to be there.

I would love to learn where to get started. We pay off our cards every month but charge less than $800 a month.
We haven’t applied for any cards in years.
I have been trying to read and learn.
I need to fly five people from IAD to Mco in September. (Free dining sucker here) One lap infant also.
We have only flown frontier. Would their card be ok or are there some others that you recommend. Southwest does not currently fly nonstop out of Washington. No way I’m gonna hold a baby for that long.

We have 2 rewards cards. One is points the other is cash 1% back and a ten percent bonus if deposited into a suntrust account.

I have been looking and trying to read. This thread is super fast moving. Any recommendations or places to read more. We have been more pay off in cash type people for a while. I do buy everything I can with my card and then pay it off.

I would love to earn enough to pay for most of our flights to Disney especially since we usually drive. I’d rather not with 4 impatient kids.

Thank you!!

I keep trying to force a weekend to work but I'm not having any luck

We actually were wondering the other night, if there is a new print/poster for the festival this year. We have the last two up on the wall :)

So cool, we will be island neighbors! I saw your post and your sweet UA redemption. Hope you can get your desired return flight as well!

You are so right about saving myself the stress...I would have been obsessively checking/calling each day to try to get the best redemption. I'm just happy we get to take this trip for pretty much free and we get to fly direct from our local airport. I hate making the drive to OAK/SFO, so this is so worth it!

Hi...I’m not familiar with Frontier or their CC...sorry..maybe someone else is.....
A lot of us here start with Chase since they have a 5/24 rule meaning they will only approve you for their cards if you have opened less than 5 personal than $800 a month on a card....are you using one for your insurance phone, cable, utility bills....the cards with the highest sign up bonuses require you to spend between a $3k and 5k on the card in the first 3 months...the CSP or CSR.....
Chase also has the Freedom or freedom unlimited which have a 10,000 UR bonuses after spending $500 in the first 3 months...
You could cash out the URs to help pay for flights if you wanted to

I keep checking DH’s Freedom and his AT & T $40 offer has completely disappeared with no credit. It’s not on his expired, redeemed or active list. I guess I’ll be SM’ing Chase about it.

Same thing for me. I'll keep you updated when I hear back.

So this may be a dumb question, but the Dell thing applies to a Plat Biz card that doesn't have the updated huge AF?

I'm having a hard time believing that AMEX will let us have this one after all the ^$(#&$*&*@&(@$ they've been pulling lately.

I'm still waiting for AT&T, too. My 2nd purchase posted on 1/17. I sent a SM and got the "we received your message" on 1/28, but I still haven't received a real response yet.
