First post on the boards here, usually a stalker on the DVC boards and the ROTR thread. Thanks @SouthFayetteFan for all the work you have and still put into that thread. I was able to ride ROTR a few weeks ago, and without that thread, I do not think I would have. Anywho, I am thinking its about time I get a different CC, maybe one that offers more rewards, a better return perhaps. I am not looking to become a "churner," I just want a card that I can keep in my wallet for years that.

So, hopefully I am doing this right. I have a 06/23 MASTERCARD BassPro. I use it for the family cell phone plan, insurance, gas, misc expenses. I pay it off every month, around $750-$1000 each month, depending on the month. We fly once or twice a year to Orlando and we have SW and JB direct flights available at our airport. I was looking into the Capital One Venture card as it may give me flexibility in booking flights, or maybe I should go with a cash back card idk. Like the Post #3 said "STOP. WAIT. PAUSE." ask before I decide. Any help would be much appreciated!!!

ETA: I held my breath for this one. After Marriott’s changes I was nervous. I’m currently trying to get enough UR’s to transfer to Grand Hyatt Kauai for a stay this Fall. I was so afraid it would be on this list, but it looks like it I lucked out. Hopefully these changes don’t hurt too much. The only one that stood out to me is MCO Hyatt is moving a category.
I read people's analysis on blogs seems like it went up less than 15% still top tier at half of the convoy rates.. 45k seems to be the tap for the standard room in peak and ive noticed over 100k for Westin properties (my goto ) for bonvoy.

I-95 drivers! Does anyone have a recommendation for somewhere to stay in/around Rocky Mount NC? We'll be leaving after market close to start our drive next month, and that's a good spot, hours-driving-wise. No Hyatts, alas.

@Judique ?

if you fly sw all the time do you have their card?
Im not sure what the basspro redemption rate is but I bet the rewards might be more useful.

Welcome!

This is the right time to get the SW card, until 2/18 you can get the card and earn 75,000 miles for spending $5,000 in 6 months, you'll have to spend at least $1,000 in 3 months but that should be easy.

One of the mods can get you into our DisChurners reddit group where you can use a support link to get that bonus. @SouthFayetteFan or @Lain can let you in the group.

Welcome to the group!

I can't even imagine saying those words together... long weekend+Maui... how lovely
Lol, it helps living in the Bay Area with relatively short flights (4.5 hours this time). It also helps with SWA in the fray. My ticket was $248 RT. Planes were pretty empty. On way back, I had entire front row to myself! Hope the Hawaii routes are doing okay for them. I’d hate to see them start cutting flights. 🙁

We don't fly SW all of the time. In fact it was our first time in a few years b/c JB moved our flights by a significant amount of time. So, with that in mind, I would like the flexibility to change flights if I needed to with the points I have gained. Perhaps this has been talked about, but reading the past 25 pages has made this newbies head spin. I think that if I were to sign up with the SW card, it would be close to 2 free flights for my family of three to fly from BUF to MCO. So thats very appealing.

As far as the rewards I get 1% back on all purchases, ie $100 would equal 100 points to spend at BassPro with 100 points equalling a $1 to spend at the store.

If you have a Costco membership, their Citibank card has 4% gas, 3% dining and travel, 2% Costco, 1% everything else. Given as Costco Cash, but the locations around us will just give us cash as change. No annual fee. Sign-up bonus might be a rotisserie chicken or cooler, lol.

The Capital One Venture is a good card, especially if most of your spend is non-category (insurance for example). 2x everything. The "miles" are easy to use, anything that codes as travel, you can "erase" (i.e. get a statement credit). Annual fee is $95, but first year is waived. After that, if you call and say you're not sure about keeping the card due to the annual fee, there's a chance they'll waive it. Sign-up bonus is 50k miles, worth $500.

My family has stayed at both a DoubleTree by Hilton and Residence Inn(Marriott) at Rocky Mount, though those stays date back to 2014-16 . Both were fine standard highway hotels. IIRC the RI gave you a breakfast credit at an attached restaurant instead of the usual buffet. And the reason we switched from one to the other was because of FNC availability,. not any issue with either place.

Does anyone know with the Alaskan and AA "pairing", is there a way to combine those miles? I have AA miles and AK miles but not enough AK miles for a 1 way flight. If I could combine them, I'd be in business!

So what does this mean for you?

Thinking about having DH apply for a Capital One venture card. He has been an AU on mine for a long. The $100 referral bonus says you need to be a new Capital One card holder. Do you think being an AU would eliminate him from being a "new" card holder?

Normally being an AU on a card (as opposed to a joint account holder) will not prevent you from getting a new card holder sign-up. I don't have specific experience with capital one, but I do know both chase and Amex would consider him a new card holder.

If it's like any other alliance partnership, no. There's no benefit for them. Plus as of now alaska miles are worth more and have better redemptions. I'd just use their shopping portal to get enough for a one way.

I feel like I need like 5k to get the one way. But I guess I'll try and shop through them.
